My £5k Land Cruiser v £100,000 SUV Challenge

Modification your cars and truck with Carwow:

The Land Cruiser is among the most widely known 7-seat SUVs on the planet!

Since it was very first released, over 10 million units have been offered in 170 countries! The question is, if you wish to pick one up today, is it worth investing ₤ 100,000 for an imported Land Cruiser 300? Or should you browse the second-hand market for something cheaper?

Well, that's exactly what we've done! We've picked up a Land Cruiser 100 for simply ₤ 5,000, and we're going to compare it to the all-new 300 to see which offers the best value for money! So let's take a better look at the 2. When it concerns the old Land Cruiser, it reveals a good couple of indications of wear and tear on the outside.

There are loads of dents, scruffs, stone chips & scratches – however that's not a surprise offered the vehicle has run for over 280,000 miles !! Likewise, upon closer evaluation of the vehicle, there are several signs of rust and decay, which might spell difficulty down the line.

On the within, the indications of wear and tear continue! The majority of the cabin needs an excellent, deep clean, and the product on the guiding wheel appears to be splitting up! Thankfully, however, the age of the cars and truck suggests there are loads of physical buttons to help manage the climate control, while most of the electrics seem to still work too.

As for the colony Cruiser, well, it quickly looks greatly different to the old car. Up top, there's a substantial plastic grille, along with some indentations across the bonnet to offer the automobile a bit more purpose.

There are modern headlights that are much brighter than the old car, while around the back, the boot is absolutely big! The only thing is, the wheels on this car seem more like they're developed for cruising, instead of off-roading.

Considered that this cars and truck is brand name brand-new, it's no surprise that the interior remains in exceptional condition. Unlike the old vehicle, it has a digital infotainment screen, however thankfully, Toyota has withstood the desire to do away with physical buttons, so the climate control and other functions can be handled with ease! In terms of area and convenience, it's all still reasonably similar to the old automobile – the good news is, however, it's much cleaner!

The old Land Cruiser was powered by a 4.7-litre V8 that produced 235hp and 434Nm. Unfortunately, the more recent automobile has done away with the V8, replacing it with a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 that produces 409hp and 650 Nm.

Toyota is widely known for building trustworthy cars – but will the old-school Land Cruiser 100 prove to be a good buy? You'll need to stick to Mat and see on your own!

A huge thanks to Arctic Trucks for their time and know-how:

And thanks to Proctor Cars for lending us the Land Cruiser 300:

*Fun Fact*: The new LC300 is made of aluminum and is smaller ( in interior space ) unlike the LC200 and the older generations which are made of steel and bigger, that’s why in the video the old LC’s doors sounded more rigid, unlike the new LC300 which is made of aluminum to save weight for the sake of better efficiency and handling, however in a crash, aluminum cracks, steel bends, meaning it’s much cheaper to fix a car made of steal

One thing that people tend to forget is that what depreciates is the car’s price and value, while the maintenance and parts are going up. So if you buy a used car for £5K which was £80K when new (adjusted to inflation), you need to be ready to service and buy spare parts for an £80K car, not a £5K one.
