Kia EV3 – Practicality and Range make this EV hard to beat !

When I participated in the press drive for the 3 the weather was terrible so it was fantastic to spend a week with the car at home. Unfortunately things didn't go as I had planned!

Something you missed, does it have a Towing capability?
It seemed to cope with that road surface by the Museum well, and the climb up the hill. You are right about so called ‘Range Anxiety’, in current cars it only exists on the pages of Journalists notebooks.

If you hold down the volume mute button it turns off the speed warning sound. You can do it at the same time as the lane assistance disable. First thing I do in my ioniq 5 – hold down 2 buttons at the same time, job done 👍

It’s a very well equipped car, but the PCP deal on this is quite expensive compared to its competitors – also it’s only available on PCP for a maximum of 3 years

You can go into your profile and change things like the mirrors moving when you get close. I turned that off, so they don’t come out until I unlock it. The car is actually huge, and there’s tons of room for any big dog. Just remove that parcel bar from it’s mounting location, and it will slide down out of the way.
I’ve just bought a spacesaver spare wheel for it, and that fits perfectly in the under floor space. Yes, it’s quite heavy, but who cares when you have so much range and electricity is cheap?
I bought the Air trim, which is absolutely fine. You get just about everything you need, and you don’t get that stupid ironing board. You don’t get a heat pump, but you really don’t need it with such a big battery pack. It would have been nice to have the GT-line seats, but that’s about all I’d want from the higher trims. (oh, and the lovely avacado paint!)
I’m only charging mine to 70%, because for 99% of journeys I don’t need to keep a huge amount of unnecessary range available.
I find the Level 2 regen on I-drive works for just about all types of road. It’s enough when driving gently around town, and not too aggressive on the motorways.
Everyone moans about the middle screen, but it’s not important. Just use the buttons, and if you need to see the climate control screen, just press the top LH icon on the screen (which you can see) and that opens up a wide screen view on the main screen. It’s a genius move to have one screen right across behind the wheel, lets you have a cost effective way to avoid the Tesla issue of no centre screen. If they didn’t use that bit behind the steering wheel, reviewers would complain about that too.
I get over 4miles/kWh most of the time. It’s easy enough if you drive cautiously and stick to the speed limits.
Personally, I abolutely love it. The range is amazing, and what it tells you is pretty close to what you get. It’s constantly updating depending on your driving style and road type, so you’re not caught out. I don’t think it would have any trouble doing a round trip of 300 miles on a single charge. In any case, you’re obviously going to stop at the Services for ten minutes a couple of times, and you’ll get another 50 miles or so top up without the slightest inconvenience. You almost certainly don’t need that huge battery, but it does allow you to maximise its life by avoiding charging it up past 80% unless you’re going on a really long trip.
My only gripes are the forward attention warning, which being perfectly honest, doesn’t work. It goes off loads of times when I’m looking dead ahead. The lane assist can’t be permanently turned off either. It’s a pity you can’t turn them off permanently because they’re a waste of time and don’t work properly. The lane assist is ok on motorways, but on country lanes, it suddenly wakes up and gives the wheel a random nudge in any direction it feels inclined to go in.

It should have 6 levels of regen, like all Kia/ Hyundai EVs.
    AUTO, 0, 1, 2, 3, and I Pedal.
I leave our Ioniq 5 in AUTO for all journeys, except for long motorway work.
You’re correct about range anxiety. It’s not a problem for an EV with 250 miles or more of range.

This is a good all-round family car that does everything well, although too large for me.
The one that really interests me is the Hyundai Inster with the larger battery, which would also fit nicely into my garage.

Nice to have you back doing reviews of a normal car again. To many people on you tube are doing to many reviews on cars like Porsche that most people can’t afford.

Had mine for 2 months now and it is great. Got the long range gt version and it seems te be plenty. The forward attention varning is annoying and needs to be fixed in a future software update. Really do not understand what it’s looking for. Is it head movement or eye movement or the amount of eyelid movement, beets me it’s just beeping. It is comfortable to drive. It’s my first full ev car and I’m curious to test public charging during longer drives later this summer. The climate screen is hidden by the steering wheel but I noticed that I just set the temperature and never even go looking for that screen anyway. Great video, have been way for it since I spotted the ev3 in the background in one of your other videos. 😊

Agree about the forward attention warning, seems to sleep on one journey then go mad on the same journey the next time.its very random. It appears for me anyway, to beep less if I wear sunglasses than if I don’t ( I don’t need spectacles to drive in the daytime). On some journeys even glancing across at a road junction sets it off.

Every reviewer of the EV3 moans about the middle screen being obscured by the steering wheel. All you do is hit the + button which is always on view and it goes full screen! Others have already pointed out the one touch mute of the speed warnings.

Thanks for the review – I’ve had the EV3 for more than a month now and love. So easy and relaxing to drive – the long range means range-anxiety is a non issue. The pull-out tray sounds like a gimmick – I think the better bet is the air trim.

Looks different to the boring stuff from certain brands, which I like.
Most of the stuff people complain about is able to be switched off, for example when you walk up to the car the auto mirrors and door handles.
IMO the LR air spec is the best value. It does not have that stupid table and has the longest range, but unfortunately the colour options are not as good as the mid and high spec.

Racked up around 2,500 miles in my Air 81kWh now. ‘Charged it to 100% this weekend (usually just charged up to 80% max) and drove from home (Reading) to Brighton and back (including lots of visiting family around the Brighton area) and still had 170+ miles range left on return-did over 200 miles on that trip (with min. of 3 adults in the car), so I’m pretty pleased with its efficiency😃

I’ve always said that when affordable EV’s reach 300 mile real world range they’re no longer the domain of the early adopters but are now suitable for everyone. We haven’t yet reached the point where ICE cars are redundant but it is coming.

Had mine almost 5 months and my range is up to 376 miles. (GT Line S. No HP) That’s my style of driving, though. Anyone else’s may differ.

“Get on my wick” is going to be my phrase of the week this week!

Great review (as always) – I am starting to come around to EV as I like the tech, the range is now suitable and I am fortunate to have space for a second car so can still experience the old world.

I own this exact model, so will make some comments. I’ve owned it since December, so through the worst of winter. No, you do not get 300+ miles in winter, at best you will eke out 3.5 (at best, with no climate control on) which gives you about 271 miles from the 78kwh usable battery. Generally it is 3, or below which gives 234 miles. However, now that it is getting warmer, 4 to 4.5 is easily im reach . I think in summer you will get high 4’s, possibly 5.

As for the climate control screen. You never use it. Set the temp you want, and from then on just use the physical controls for the fan speed. Or even bump up and down the temperature.
