FIRST DRIVE – 2023 Lexus RX450h PHEV – SO SMOOTH ! | 4K

Welcome to my Very first Drive video of the brand new Lexus RX450h Plug-in Hybrid. I decided to provide it the ultimate test and take it on a 500 mile journey to Cornwall with Mrs G and the pups.

The new RX450h has a striking make over, particularly in this striking colour Sonic Copper. The fit and surface inside the cabin are of the greatest quality and the plug-in hybrid drive train delivers a smooth drive to cover miles with ease. But what is the vehicle like to cope with and simply how complex is the drive train and how efficient is it?

The colour looks exactly the same as my rose gold Fiat 500e and I love it.

What a great looking car… Do like SUVs – not just for the high driving position but also the extra headroom – I’m “only” 6ft3 but have a very long back & neck which makes ‘ordinary’ hatches etc a bit tight for headroom – had 6 months with a 1-series and I lost count of the number of times my head hit the roof when going over bumps.

    Good review, as always.

I like the look of this car inside and out but could never own one I’m afraid. Not because of the questionable fuel economy (because if you can splurge 80k on a car you can afford that) but because of the damn gearbox.

Absolutely, mate. Gearbox is a killer for me – and the stupid price!

At that mpg and price point cant see this winning many buyers. My 330d MHT would do 48+ on that journey for example

My XC90T8 is doing about 62.5mpg. That’s because it is plugged in on a regular basis. Oh and on Cornish roads you are always on your horn when approaching corners. Just in case a Western National bus is coming the other way.

I’ve always thought Lexus styling is nice but just not for me. Definitely a neat color. Great video Sir Pete and as always good to get Mrs G input as well.

Great vid as always. Bit of local knowledge to avoid Stonehenge which is the biggest pain in the arse known to man in terms of traffic turn right at Countess RDB Amesbury and go round through Larkhill then re join the 303 at Longbarrow RDB – adds about 5 mins but can save you 30 mins!! Keep em coming!!

Hi, have you driven the NX 450h+ and, if so, what did you make of that? Presumably the same engine / EV architecture but one vehicle size down. (Point me to the video if appropriate.) Thanks.

Evening Ped and Peddlerz 😎 Beautiful looking car, love the front end design, the rear looks just like the Audi. The inside is very nice, you can see the quality and the seats look mega comfortable. The main screen is massive but fits well within the dash, like the ‘wood’ effect aswell 👌I always found my Golf GTE was great for local running but on a longer trip it wasn’t very fuel efficient at all, especially in regen…Great car but not sure I’d go PHEV again. The Lexus is definitely a great vehicle, especially for a roadtrip, the colour reminds me of the classic Mini 1100 Special ‘Rose’. Can’t say I’d spend that kind of money, I’d be off to find a MK1 E-Type 👌 Best of all though, 235mpg!😂 Love these ‘real world’ figures we are given from the manufacturers 🤣🤓

Not sure about the front, mate. Comparing it to a Roma is a bit extreme? Agree with everything else you’ve said 235 mpg?!?! 🤣🤣🤣

Agree about PHEV’s being a good compromise – especially with the current charging infrastructure. My only gripe is most PHEVs have smaller petrol tanks than their full ICE equivalent. So once the 30-50 miles on battery have gone, your left with a smaller fuel tank.

But only 2 minutes to do a full tank..😊 So no big deal…..but in a trip from Berlin to Madrid for exemple in a day you need to stop much more times😅

I’m on my second NX 300h and love the car.In fact I’ve had BMWs,Mercs,Land Rover Discos but it by far the most comfortable, reliable car I’ve owned. In fact I’m thinking of going for the new RX

I like the colour also but my main gripe against these modern cars is that they look like bricks with the cabin rounded and sanded.
I suppose it’s inevitable with the amount of ‘stuff’ in them but whatever happened to sleek and sporty looking??

    Hi Ped,

    Good review!
I work for Lexus and the bong is indeed annoying, I suspect it will be fixed with a software update at some point, Sport mode is accessed via the screen, 4 little boxes in an icon at the bottom will open a page where you can quickly select drive mode, and to confuse mattes S on the gear selector is more to be thought of as simulated gears. I recommend if our press team let you have a go try a day or two in the RX500, if the press team cant accommodate you let me know and I’ll be able to wangle you our one for a couple of days.

I do have a soft spot for a Lexus and that colour is certainly very striking… I did have to chuckle when you showed the typical Cornish road… On our last family trip to The Kerno, we ended up on a road just like that with a blooming squirel that ran for about a quater of a mile in the centre of the lane and kept stopping to look back at us, then carried on running along in front of the car… It was rather funny!!

Like others said £80k is a lot and there is some serious competition out there. Mrs Ped please have two hands on the steering wheel. Just seen the podcast with Joe and enjoyed it very much.

If you like the large PHEV SUV that wafts along and is actually cheaper and just as premium feeling with more power you should look at the Volvo XC60 T8 Recharge. I do like the fact Lexus pretty much started the hybrid thing so should have a lot of experience with making one though.

Personally, I feel Lexus are one of the best car makers out there. Reliable, well made, comfortable, stylish… One thing that is second to none, seems to be the dealer service. Lexus, seem to look after their customers better than many, if not all brands do. A great car, although the colour is too ‘out there’ for me. Great review!
