    Planes can reach incredibly high speeds, with some aircraft exceeding Mach 3 (more than three times the speed of sound).Β The fastest planes are typically military fighter jets and experimental aircraft.Β Commercial planes generally cruise at around Mach 0.8 (around 981 km/h or 610 mph).Β

    Here’s a closer look at plane speeds:

    Fastest Planes (Military and Experimental):

    NASA X-15:Β Mach 6.72 (4,520 mph).

    SR-71 Blackbird:Β Mach 3.4 (2,500 mph+).

    Lockheed YF-12:Β Mach 3.2 (2,275 mph).

    MiG-25 Foxbat:Β Mach 3.2 (2,190 mph).

    Bell X-2 Starbuster:Β Mach 3.2 (2,094 mph).

    NASA X-43:Β Mach 9.6 (approximately 7,000 mph).Β

    Commercial Aircraft:

    Airbus A330Neo:Β Maximum speed of 1,061 km/h (659 mph).Β

    Boeing B788:Β Maximum speed of 1,051 km/h (653 mph).Β

    Boeing 747-8i:Β Maximum speed of 1,136 km/h (706 mph).Β

    General Speed Information:

    Commercial planes typically cruise at around Mach 0.8.Β

    Jet aircraft generally cruise most efficiently at altitudes around 10,000–15,000 m (33,000–49,000 ft) or more.Β

    Some commercial planes, like the Boeing 747-8i, can reach speeds over 1,130 km/h (700 mph).Β

    Fighter jets can reach speeds from Mach 2.25 to Mach 9.6, showcasing the heights of aviation engineering and military capability.

    It doesn’t need to accelerate that quickly, it reaches a much higher speed eventually but it does it as efficiently as possible. Also the speed going down is because it’s ascending which lowers the horizontal speed.

    Hope that helped

    1. @ashti5555 Avatar
      @ashti5555

      Not sure if the speed isn’t changing because the horizontal speed is descending. Isn’t more due to the speed just being constant (i.e not accelerating)

      I hope we get the same test in a fighter jet or other fast military aircraft, especially if it’s carrier capable like the F/A18 Super Hornet or F35C Lightning II.

    @motogpf1fan939

    The 0-60 time depends on the plane and the length of the runway. When you have a long runway, you dont go “full throttle” ( only 80-90%) to “protect” the engines and make them last longer.

    Remember air speed is not the same as ground speed. This is why the reading drops after take off as the airplane is on an angle relative to the ground.
