Skoda Elroq vs Kia EV3 | First UK twin test | Which electric SUV is the champion? | Electrifying

We've got our hands on the very first Skoda Elroq in the UK, and what much better way to put it to the test than a head-to-head with one of its most significant rivals– the Kia EV3! Both are set to shock the mid-size electric SUV market, but which one comes out on top?

The Elroq is a huge offer for Skoda– not in size, however in value. It competes in one of the most competitive EV sectors, taking on the Kia EV3, Kona Electric, and Volvo EX30. Rates begin at ₤ 31,500 for the entry-level design, with approximately 360 miles
of variety in the top-spec 85 model. Meanwhile, the Kia EV3 starts at ₤ 32,995 and boasts a 372-mile optimum variety in GT-Line S trim.

We put both through their speeds– design, tech, usefulness, driving dynamics, and charging– before providing our verdict. Can the Elroq dethrone the EV3, or does Kia's most current electric SUV struck all the right notes?

    I’m ordering my skoda next week I think it’s a great car looks and practicality

    The elroq looks nice but it is jut an other crossover. Put the battery and the motors into a Scala/Ocatvia body … less weight, better aero, better efficiency -> more range… this crossover trend should stop!

    1. @edlectricfuture Avatar
      @edlectricfuture

      The problem with doing that is that the batteries sit under the floor and the seating in the rear is compromised (your knees end up too high – see reviews of ID7, A6 e-tron, etc). The difference in height between Octavia and Elroq is about 15 cm, which is probably mostly battery.

      @simondehaas8784

      I agree 100%. They didn’t need to design it like this. It could have been like an ID.3 but made a bit longer to extend the boot (ie, more like an electric Octavia).

    3. @lg.studio Avatar
      @lg.studio

      @ How about they leave a gap in the battery there, and extend it further frontback, or just have a smaller capacity. If you have a more efficient shape car and even less weight, It woul’d not reduce the range that much imho. They just like to not solve problems and force crossovers down our throats looking all ecological with new EVs for better profit margins.

    4. @edlectricfuture Avatar
      @edlectricfuture

      @ the Taycan already does this, but I assume it’s a much greater expense to do this (or you lose too much range with a smaller battery).

      I’ve given up. cars are just too tall now. I’ll settle for a low estate boot on the SUV but currently I think only the Renault 4 is trying that.

    Skoda looks better all-round to me, BUT at over £40k for either of them in mid-top trim, that means road tax in first 5 years will be heavy!… £600/year for a “luxury car” – the target market for this type of car won;t stomach that imo.

    1. @lw2978 Avatar
      @lw2978

      Skoda Uk is offering 0% finance plus £3500 deposit contribution on the Elroq, so you could get the 85 Edition with the non-metallic blue paint plus a Heat pump for under the £40k limit (it would be £36,250 over 18 to 36 months). ‘Only available until 19th February though. That seems like a good deal if you can cope with the extra size over an EV3.

      £40k limit is based on the list price. I would rather have a slightly lower spec than pay £2k more to drive on UK roads that never see a penny of it.

      @ericedge2929

      @@lw2978 It’s based on the list price – it doesn’t matter how much discount you manage to get. I should add though, EVs registered on or before March 31st avoid the £410 supplement.

    5. @lw2978 Avatar
      @lw2978

      @@ericedge2929 That’s why I quoted this deal, as it’s £250 under the £40k tax limit at RRP £39,750 (the deal brings it down to £36,250).

    Both are really quite nice but the EV3 just looks far more interesting whereas the elroq looks a bit out of date.

    The parts bin criticism only applies to car testers. Real world buyers only have one or two cars to compare. Realistically, for Skoda owners it means they benefit from design, cost savings and utility from brands higher up the food chain.

    The Elroq just felt mind numbingly boring after driving the R5.

    I’ve got an Enyaq and I love it. I’ll never go back to an ice car now. My only gripe is that the charging network is failing in Britain. You can have whole banks of chargers down and they don’t care. Plus we’re being ripped off with charging costs at public chargers. It needs sorting or ev’s will fail.
