    What happened to Honda and their legendary smooth free revving engines?

    Why would anyone buy this instead of a Civic?

    Personally I think you’re over playing the revving engine noise. It’s noticeably nicer than a Toyota hybrid engine.

      Never tried the Toyota engine, but the engine noise in my HRV is horrendous when climbing big hills (with a loaded car) or putting my foot down to overtake etc. I took mine back to the dealer after a couple of months because I thought there was something wrong with it! Apart from that, it’s a good car.

      @craig3211

      @ A fully loaded hybrid car of that size in that price bracket (regardless of brand) is going to be noisy when climbing big hills. Only way to “reduce” that is to go to the next sized hybrid engine. Some cars do have a little more sound deadening materials but those will have other issues to consider.

      Toyota has reduced the noise on the Yaris Cross by adding more insulation and thicker glass. It’s now less noisy than the HR-V. Honda could have done the same.

      @@ffotograffydd Toyota needs to use more sound deadening materials due to the way their hybrids work/sound. I have found they do this by compromising in other areas. It is then up to the individual to identify your priorities. What are you having to give up. Although Toyota has got a leg up in some of their hybrids in the fact they still have a spare wheel. As far as the Honda personally I find it a more refined finish & overall better driving experience. Don’t get me wrong if I didn’t own a Honda I would probably have a Toyota

      @ That doesn’t mean Honda couldn’t follow their lead when it comes to noise reduction, which is the point I was making.

    The engine noise isn’t that bad….and ceases once speed achieved.

      Exactly, i’m so sick of people reviewing hybrids with cvts/faux-gearboxes Whinging bout engine noise when it’s almost Never an issue other than the times you’re Actually having to hoof it onto a motorway. Anyone with a lead gumboot for a foot should be looking Elsewhere anyway.

    2. @TL-xw6fh Avatar
      @TL-xw6fh

      Virtually all hybrid cars suffer from this issue. Much of it is due to the ICE combustion design. It is based on the Atkinson cycle design, which unfortunately, tends to sound rough when under hard acceleration.

    3. @radleyg9486 Avatar
      @radleyg9486

      @@TL-xw6fh may be the case. Having driven Honda, Toyota and Lexus hybrids I don’t find the ‘noise’ an issue, all down to personal preferences I guess.

    In the real life you never have to accelerate hard the engine is strong enough with torque

    Had mine since 2023, great car, average 60mpg, don’t really notice the engine noise too much. Great practicality especially with the magic seats and flat load space. In my deal I got 5 years servicing, 5 year warranty and 5 years breakdown cover, what’s not to like?

      I quite like the cars looks and all the climate controls, would you be able to fit a pedal cycle in the rear with the seats folded up?

  9. @manuelf6010 Avatar
    @manuelf6010

    Hi ! How is the engine noise at highway speeds? At constant speed I mean, without moving the accelerator. Thank you !

    1. @justasimplefox Avatar
      @justasimplefox

      Than it´s ok, but expect also quite some wind + road noise above 110km/h. I have the HRV and new BMW X1 which is much quieter 😊

  10. @jkkchow74 Avatar
    @jkkchow74

    In Australia and NZ, the HRV is a 4 seater… Yes you hear that right, it somehow doesn’t meet safety standards because of a missing rear seatbelt, which makes it even less appealing… Such a waste especially given some of the good design features.

    Love the look but the engine noise was a big no for me thats why i settled for the 2019 honda hrv turbo version with red interior and its been perfect 1 year now ❤️❤️

    Why buy this car, it actually achieves its claimed MPG, it has no gearbox, it has an incredibly simple engine, it has all the tech as standard with lane keep and adaptive cruise that is better in use than the Tesla autopilot – I have both cars. It’s built in Japan which means it will not break – actual rather than perceived build quality is just much better than other cars. It’s cheap to run and insure, it’s very spacious and comfortable, because the front seat folds back flat you can load the longest IKEA boxes in it. Pick the Advance trim which is the second cheapest and you get every option you’re ever going to want. Basically a great second car to buy and forget about that just does every job very well. Downsides, the engine is a bit noisy. Things to improve, use the 2.0 engine and add a motor to the rear axle to make it 4wd.

    Anyone who suffers from insomnia should pin a photo of the HR-V front on the ceiling above the bed. Guaranteed to make you fall asleep in 10 seconds.

  14. @lDaniOkl Avatar
    @lDaniOkl

    The noise isn’t related to the hybrid system; that’s how the CVT (continuously variable transmission) works, keeping the engine at the most efficient point during acceleration (meaning high revs).
    This also causes the driver to feel ‘disconnected’ from the car, which is a common downside of CVTs. Otherwise, it seems to be a nice family car.

  15. @camilstoenescu Avatar
    @camilstoenescu

    Why not get a manual and thus get rid of the cvt noise.

    If the rear bench were on a slide head room and boot space with occupants could be optimised for improved catalogue appeal. Would love to see hard facts on the usage of the magic seats!
