The MG4 has actually been among the greatest EV success stories of the previous few years: economical, fun to drive and evidence that going electrical doesn't have to indicate clearing your cost savings account. But now there's an even cheaper version. Meet the new MG4 Urban.
This is the cut-price infant brother to the standard MG4, designed to bring the headline price down even further. However what do you lose in the process? Is the Urban still the sweet area in the range, or does the regular MG4 make more sense as soon as you've gone into the information?
Tom has been behind the wheel to discover. He's putting the MG4 Urban through its rates to see how it drives, what devices you get (and don't get), what the real-world range looks like and, most importantly, whether it's still the EV bargain that assisted MG shake up the market in the very first place.
Has MG stripped out excessive in the name of rate? Or is this the most intelligent method into electric driving right now? If you're considering your first EV, or just desire maximum value for minimum investment, you'll wish to enjoy this.

    I thought I was looking at a Vauxhall Corsa from a decade ago for a second

      It’s double the size and nothing like an old Corsa

    It’s what the Ford Puma should’ve been (with a 2 door coupe variant)

    ID.Cross, Skoda Epiq or one of these?

    Reliability is a consideration, but so is practicality. Hmm. Decisions, decisions. Maybe we need an Electrifying head to head?

      @RayyanR05

      The Cross and Epiq are small crossovers, akin to the MGS5, this is more equivalent to the upcoming ID. Polo or Cupra Raval superminis.

    Mg are consistently last in reliability so I’d avoid until it’s out a while and problems were sorted

      Yes, but reliability surveys include software issues. I’d rather have that than mechanical faults.

      I can say owning 2 MGs in 4 years. The car is solid and never left me stranded. There are small stuff that needs repairing here and there, but it is mostly covered by the warranty. But all I can say I had less visits to my dealer than my early Tesla Model 3 2021

    You can get a brand new, Top of the range S5 for £25K so these will be selling for less than £20 in no time.

    MG’s naming strategy for this car is barmy, totally confusing and is nothing but diluting the MG4 version. Totally separate version and car, built on a different platform, bigger in size, with a heat pump as standard and a rear passenger light, which the updated MG 4 still doesn’t have. A total enigma. It should be called MGS4, which makes more sense and fits better in the range of cars.

    1. @stephen546 Avatar
      @stephen546

      To be a MG S4 it would need to be an SUV which it isn’t and be higher quality etc. The original MG4 also gets a heat pump which is a very major plus for both variants of the car. Much of the competition don’t offer that as an option let alone standard equipment

    2. @paul._david Avatar
      @paul._david

      @stephen546It’s bigger than a MG4 could easily be classed as a small SUV. The size is very near to the MG S5. It certainly isn’t a MG 4 or anything like in the European and UK markets.

    3. @RayyanR05 Avatar
      @RayyanR05

      @paul._davidIt’s not an SUV. The MGS5 is a small SUV, but I think it would be better if they just called it the MG3 EV, in line with the ICE MG3 supermini.

    My problem is I started driving in the 1970s when MGs were MGBGTs and fun. So to see this thing called an MG involves a sort of cognitive dissonance. Were it labelled a Lada it might be impressive. At this end of the market I really prefer the small European cars again.

  13. @shroomyesc Avatar
    @shroomyesc

    Well if it’s not exactly supermini sized and it’s larger than the MG4 which is a c-segment hatch then how’s it a supermini at all then?

    1. @tomwookieford8445 Avatar
      @tomwookieford8445

      This was the argument on the launch. Sector up, but suoermini money, and pitched ‘below’ the hatchback 4. I dunno. 🤷‍♂️

    I don’t mind the design but it looks grim in silver. The name is stupid much like the Dolphin Surf being completely unrelated to the Dolphin. In the end there’s so much choice at this price range from more reliable brands that I don’t know what this does best

    I have the old MG4 Trophy LR and I describe it as the 1.6L Cortina for the modern day. This even more so (maybe the 1.3L though). This’ll get a lot of people out of a 15 year old ‘banger’, just in time for the first baby!

    Less than a couple of decades ago, the basic budget “supermini” would have been a 1 litre Ford Fiesta with a single airbag, no remote locking or air con and wind down windows in the back. It would have had a 14 second 0-60 time and something like 65bhp.
    Making comments about this only having 158bhp and 9.5 seconds 0-60 times seems a little churlish and even though car prices have increased a lot since then, you still get a lot of space and kit compared to only a few years ago.

    I had an MG5 – never again. I switched to Citroen and I’ve had so much less hassle.
