    Got to defend Driver Assist Systems, I LOVE Travel Assist on my Škoda Enyaq. Only occasionally does it decelerate when the mapping thinks the car is on the parallel road or indeed the road under the flyover, but very occasionally and very smoothly. Caught me out the first couple of times, but now I just, you know, … accelerate. Overall I find it so relaxing that the commute I used to make on the train into London is now one I make in the car. Quicker (by a full hour), cheaper, AND more relaxing even (especially) in traffic jams.

    Tom’s description of the road surface humming, is something I’ve heard on a particular section of the A39 here in Cornwall, before it was resurfaced.

    That M25 section made the HUD in our Ioniq 5 start to buzz, now it does it on other rough sections of road too. 😢

    I used to tow aircraft whilst serving in the airforce. That included reversing into tight spots in the hangar.

    Best test song I tend to use is _Sail_ by Awolnation. It has good highs, mids and thumping lows with a wide volume dynamic range.

    Some cars clips the highs and lows when turned up high, others lose definition (sound muffled) in the low volume bits. A good car sound system is one where you can just listen to the song without being distracted by how it’s being played back.

    The BYD/Octopus deal only requires the car to be plugged in 240 hours (12 hours for 20 days) a month, rather than all the time. Also allows for longer periods of absence holidays etc.

    Sounds like the new used car website could do with a filter for dog suitability, perhaps graded through low entry small boots Chihuahua, through dog mode Tesla for cool dogs, boots suitable for high jump agile border collies to low entry large dogs like a St Bernard. Still need a return to Honda CRV style showers brought back for muddy dogs like my spaniel

    Nice sensible chat. I love my adaptive cruise on my e-Niro. I don’t mind putting up with some odd behaviour here and there. Motorway traffic is no longer a chore.

    Adaptive cruise don’t have it but don’t fancy it either. I’m a fan of speed limiter feel much more in control and it doesn’t drop if brakes are touched

    We’re looking for a BMW i3 as a second runabout EV. I’ve looked into tyres as part of my research. There are actually 3 premium manufacturers making the tyres, (Michelin, Bridgestone and Continental), but not all 3 do the rear REX size, but off hand I can’t remember which. The Michelin seem to be the longest lasting, and cost about £150 per corner, so that’s what I’d go for.

      Agree with this. Having tried all three (I do 20k miles per week year in my i3) Michelin last the longest, Continentals wore out alarmingly quickly, all three about the same price, £150.

    Remember people – Cruise Control and Adaptive Cruise is a DRIVER AID!!! It’s not a ‘fire and forget’ system. Use it properly, and it is awesome.

    Question about regen on brakes, especially with Tesla’s will every so often blend the actual brakes in with the regen, meaning the brakes get a heat cycle and are good health. Got 80,000 miles on my Model 3 and my brakes are around 40% worn. This info was given by Tesla at the car’s first ‘service’ at 78,000 miles.

    Lastly – Alpine 290 every day over a Cupra Borne!

    On the range extender story: in China they actually call them PHEV, which is quite confusing. But I personally think it is a good thing to ease people into driving electric and after living with the thing for a year or two they would find out the engine has never actually started and will get a full EV next. So for the transition it certainly is a good idea!
    And btw in VWs home market, Germany, there are definitely still white areas in the charging landscape… So overall I am happy for people going range extended EV rather than the horrific concept of PHEV western style with the electric motor and battery being paired with an ICE engine in some complex way…

    Couple of pubs in Yorkshire still have free chargers.
    Thanks for putting in chapters. So much easier to jump stuff with no interest.
    That really high miles airport taxi also had free charging. Crikey that was a brilliant buy !
    Love adapted cruise, less on a bus motorway. It is great for an A road where I am just following the car in from for an hour as there is no where to over take.

    If you are buying a Kia EV you can obtain a discount equal to the government grant of £3750 by taking a pcp with Kia finance. A buyer/borrower is entitled to repay the loan at any time under the Consumer Credit Act 1974. We have just done this buying an EV3 and will repay the loan after making one monthly payment.

    I had to get the brake pads on my eC4 replaced because of corrosion due to lack of use. I’ve never used the B mode since and do the heavy braking weekly.

    Another piece on the web where James reports JLR installing 26 ha of solar farm at their head office at Gaydon. One of the features of this sort of installation is that it can be “private wire” where you do not need a huge new grid connection with a waiting time of about ten years at the moment. I do not know whether this installation is private wire, but I know of several other live cases of this being used especially in industries which need to produce a lot of heat. The home equivalent of private wire is a few solar panels and perhaps some battery storage. With enough private wire and EV V2G the existing grid can do quite a lot more than at present with the existing infrastructure.

    This is not meant to be a slight on the great team on the Kilowatt Half Hour crew.

    In the past I have used David Mitchell’s Unbelievable Truth as a sleep enhancer. Play old shows in my headphones and I’m asleep within 15-20 mins.

    Kilowatt Half Hour has the same effect. Now, let me make this abundantly clear… only old episodes. I’m fully awake for all your new 50min Half Hour shows.
