If manufacturers installed appropriately placed USB sockets for dash cams it would make things easier.

Some do! Many Skoda models, ford, and MGs have usb ports by the rearview mirror

And in most cases, it is possible to tap a power supply from up by the mirror, as many vehicles have chromatic mirrors, that require 12 volts to operate. This can be intercepted in many cases by car audio specialists, giving a USB near the mirror.

@johnnodge4327  I’ve used a Dongar adapter to do just that, but convincing my dad to let me do that is proving problematic, so for him a factory fit port would be better.

I’d NEVER buy a new car: Let someone else suffer the depreciation, then buy one with `options`…

Think the dashcam thing is more lack of manufacturer software/hardware integration, think Teslas integration is really elegant and would hope it comes to more cars 👌

…And I concur with the demand for storable solutions. I have a dashcam in my car for `business use`. There is no `right to privacy` when one is on the road. Button-push for multi-storeys?

Test drove both inster and R5, the inster is amazingly more practical even tho it’s smaller so easier to drive around town and motorway no problem, cheaper for insurance and 0% pcp, quite a happy car.
the R5 has the more conventional retro styling and does drive great more planted but still not low, in the end its person preference but my son preferred the inster 02 and its coming in two weeks !
Camera’s loop recording should always be built in this could reduce insurance and crime in the long run .

OTA updates are becoming more important to me. Apps can connect or fail, but updates can make or break them.

There is no ‘right to privacy’ in a public space where you should have no such expectation. But any data retained should be destroyed after any time deemed no longer required. This varies with use and intent. As a dashcam overites footage this can be deemed ‘de facto’ removed…

The heat pump vs no heat pump will be interesting.
Our Ioniq 5 doesn’t have a heat pump. However looking at the energy consumption on the display shows the heater only consuming 0.3 to 0.5 kW to maintain 21°C with an outside temperature of 5°C.
At the start of a journey, the energy consumption is higher to bring the cabin up to temperature, normally about 2.5 kW, unless it’s on full defrost mode, which it climbs to 5 kW.

In warmer weather, the energy consumption is less, sometimes nothing at all.

As to whether it’s worth having, depends on.

A: how expensive an option it is.

B: how a majority of charging is taking place, like home off peak or public charging.

C: how many miles are driven.

D: how long you’re keeping the car.

For us on 18k miles per year, with a vast majority of our charging at 6.7p per kwh and keeping the car for 3 years, paying an additional £900 for a heat pump made absolutely no financial sense. The reason being that £900 worth of electricity at 6.7p is lot of heater use, something like 8 years worth, so it makes no financial sense to option it.

Your calculation ignores the possibility of a better price when you sell. However given your cheap electricity, the conclusion probably holds.

Yes please for the with/without heat pump. Ginny had talked last year about doing a review using the KIA EV3 (which happens to be on my short list for my next car) for that test. Just thought I’d say great to see you both and I wouldn’t be put off it was the Kilowatt 2 hours!!!

Regarding apps I’ve had a Polestar 2 for a few months and the app has been perfect so far. Allows charge scheduling, remote climate control, open and close the car and windows etc. A useful feature is it tells you where the car is and allows you to flash the headlight when you’re not sure where you’re parked. It also shows the status of lights and brake and washer fluids

Daahcams are forbidden in Portugal and if you get caught you can be fined for having one in the car, let alone in use. The EU will probably tighten up use over the next few years to the point that you simply can not have one.
The manufacturers are just ahead of the curve on this

Inster v R5 is a weird one. As a wheelchair user who needs hand controls I’m always looking at what will work better for me. Weirdly , I think the smaller Inster would suit better as with the sliding rear seats forward I could get my wheelchair in more easily and, having a smaller forest of stalks, it will be more hand control friendly.

My daughter won’t give up her Jimmy, but I think the Inster is ideal for her. I have a #1 and would love to share the Inster with her. She wants a small car with character, but loves her Jimny even though it’s starting to go wrong. Xx

Interesting discussion about the heat pumps and looks forward to the test with and with out, I have an Ioniq5 Ultimate without a heat pump, owned the car nearly four years done mix of city, rural and motorway driving and never seen below 1.9 KWPM and that was on a motorway run in -5 degrees during the winter. Sometimes they are not always worth the extra cost n extra weight.

Re. Dashcams, it should at least be standard for a USB outlet to be provided on the back of the rear view mirror, I’m fairly sure the Buzz has that. Would make installing one significantly easier.
