    You can drive a truck for 4.5 hours and then you need a 45 minute break. So max distance is 252 miles.

      @winfriedtheis5767

      Theoretical distance as you can’t go flat out 56mph. I guess 200 miles is more realistic and those can be recharged in 45min at a 400kW charger easily, as average consumption loaded of a 42t lorry is about 1kWh/km… so no MW charging required for most of normal operations in mainland Europe. UK might have higher consumption, as you use these extra high trailers and your road surfaces are so rough…

      @winfriedtheis5767- the UK has Megawatt chargers installed already, at the London Gateway cargo port, with others being installed at ports and majort arteries around the country.

      This makes sense as the container vehicles are recharged quickly whilst loading, then dispatched and on return reload/recharge, and switches drivers when their hours are up. This way the eHGV can be continuously utilised without downtime to charge.

      And then you have to hope there is a charger where you’re having your break. Not many chargers in laybys, loading bays, or outside of wherever we’re delivering to. Go to a services and there’s no room so you have to leave and find elsewhere

      @mojothejester9889you are totally right that currently this is not yet reality in a lot pf places. My main point is that MW charging with its massive burden on the grid isn’t really where we need to get to to make eHGV work. With the knowledge that for daytime charging 400kW are sufficient and overnight it could be even less if their was sufficient infrastructure to stay overnight. I learned this from the fantastic @electrictrucker channel, who shows the daily life reality of European truck drivers.
      I also read that the UK has a massive issue, because there are essentially very little amenities for truck drivers compared to continental Europe.
      And yes in the future there should be chargers everywhere, where trucks have to stop anyway for a while.

    We have looked at campers, motorhomes etc… but agree that they are just simply too expensive. £30,000 can buy a whole lot of nights in a decent hotel.

    Tom …. You are not alone! There are zillions of people having issues with smart charging across various electricity suppliers. Some of it is distrust that the off-peak will be applied during the daylight hours. … having said that we aren’t having any trouble with our BMW i3 sipping electrons in little top-ups .

    A few weeks ago I asked if any of the team had heard about the ongoing battery problems with the Volvo EX30. Vicky responded stating she had contacted Volvo and was waiting on a reply. Did she get one? As an EX30 owner I’ve now been waiting on a fix for this for almost 6 months now. 😢

    The UK already has Megawatt chargers for eHGV charging; 12 Kempower MCS chargers are operational at the London Gateway cargo port, with a further three sites under construction up the spine of the North/South motorway network.

    These are 1.5MW+ chargers, so are more powerful than those Tesla typically deploy, who are behind the technology of the likes of ABB, Alpitronic and Kempower for MCS capability.

    Further, Tesla is only able to bring the smaller Tesla Semi to Europe, as the 500 mile range one is not legal (tractor is too long). So faces stiff competition from the established European eHGV makers.

    Tom, I’m with Scottish Power and use their EV optimise. I don’t have a smart charger and it communicates with the car direct. I get cheap electric 8p any day between 8pm and 4pm. 20 hours

    Tom’s Born, there’s an issue with VAG stuff where it goes into deep sleep, some Renaults too, and the charger doesn’t wake the car back up to charge. Needs a dealer update iirc, FB group will know

    Tom, not having a problem with EDF Go Electric smart bolt on smart tariff and my Cupra Born. With EDF we can pause charging on the infotainment screen as soon on the infotainment screen as you plug in so we also don’t need to leave running at peak rate so get a later “smart charge” session. So maybe the same on EON to avoid the initial peak charge. Also check on the Cupra battery setting that the cable is not being disconnected after each charge otherwise a subsequent allocated charging slots after the 1st one in each session are ignored.

    Having recently bought a first all electric car and watching your useful videos you made with Octopus Energy. What I think would be useful going forwards is to give a realistic range for a car up to 80% charge in the real world. Most people don’t charge their cars to 100%. My used BMW i7 I’ve bought only has about 270 miles to 80% battery in the summer. Love the car though.

    1. @concinnus Avatar
      @concinnus

      Well no one but cabbies are using the full range daily. For the few times a year you’re going to use >80% of the range, you can charge to 100% just before setting out, and since the pack doesn’t sit at 100% for long this does minimal wear.
