Ford E-Transit Custom DRIVEN: Is this Ford’s best EV? | Electrifying

#etransit #fordelectric #electricvans

Britain's best selling automobile isn't a hatchback or an SUV – it's this– the Ford Custom. It's such a typical site on the roadway that they are like light posts. You do not even observe they exist. However they are getting on with the task of transferring plumbings and plasterers and … cops individuals all over the UK.

So for this van to go electrical is huge news.

Like the basic Customized, it looks excellent– the only real hints that this is an electrical van are a blanked-off grille, discreet charging port in the bumper and badging to the back. Yet beneath the skin, it's really different to a piston-powered Custom. For a start it's rear-drive rather of front, with an underslung battery pack and rear-mounted electrical motor.

There's an option of 3 power outputs– 135 or 217PS in the two volume trims and 285PS in the Ford MS-RT, which is the rally-inspired performance choice. All variations feature a 64kWh battery pack, offering an optimum of 209 miles range on the official WLTP cycle. That sounds a bit little compared to rivals like the VW ID.Buzz and Vauxhall Vivaro.

Charging times are generally in-line with competitors– utilizing a 125kW rapid charger will get you from 10-80% in about 40 minutes.

Overall payload is 239kg less than diesel models at 1088kg and there is a choice of body options – panel van, double-cab with six traveler seats, a Kombi with as much as eight seats or a Multicab with a two-seat 2nd row and staggered bulkhead, enabling longer loads on one side. There are likewise two wheelbases: basic L1 or extended L2, with one roofing system height– H1, which at under two metres in height will suit a standard domestic garage.

In L1 kind, it uses 5.8 cubic metres of freight area, with an extra cubic metre in longer wheelbase L2 layout.

    Sorry but the 64kw battery is a massive FAIL..!! A real world range of 100 miles with a few tools onboard….. Utterly useless….
    It has a beautiful drive and excellent seats, but can’t actually go anywhere.

      Yeah it’s crazy they don’t offer a 100 kWh variant, it’s like Ford hates money and sales.

      fully loaded plumber in US was getting 130-140 miles of range- found it was more speed effecting range than weight he said

    Desperate to buy a really useful, long range electric van….. Looked at the E Transit in 2022 and prayed for a bigger battery option as 100 to 120 miles is useless. Three years later and they release the new E-Transit…. But same pathetic one battery option!!! Utter disappointment. The Renault E-Traffic is miles better with far better range

      Yes it’s very sad,when I use to commute down to London for my job we was doing a minimum of 250 miles a day times that by 6 and that was the rough weekly miles we was doing with tank of diesel use to last us around 1.5=2 days which wasn’t bad considering the weight we was carrying,this Transit does look really nice and I’m sure it drives superbly but the range is a huge disappointment being the very van that built Britain and is designed to go up and down motorways all day long,I’m praying for 120-130kwh battery one day with a 30 Minute DC charging time.

      Yep. We had to go for the plug in hybrid for exactly that reason. I can’t charge at home (or won’t because work have been unclear as to how or if they’d pay me back) ans sometimes go days without going in to the workshop. Still a great van but I’d have preferred full electric

      hrm.Now we,re told to only charge the battery to 80%.So we,re in the UK.its raining,demister on,lights on radio on and a van full of stock or workman tools.How far are you going to get on this battery in real world conditions

    5. @James_Howarth Avatar
      @James_Howarth

      @mymusic5772 Who told you to only charge to 80%, I’d say charge to 80-90% on ultra rapid as it slows down when reaching near full but you can charge any EV to 100% and you won’t have a problem 👍

    I remember when front wheel drive came in. It was safer than rear wheel drive in icy or slippery conditions=fairly important!
    So what’s changed?
    Pull better than push. Less fun, but safer.

      @@UpsideDownFork. Well the sophisticated TCS in my rear wheel drive BMW, and that of colleagues who owned Mercedes, didn’t work when we had snow for a few days. I could not drive more than 2 metres off my driveway and the same for my colleagues in a different part of the county. My BMW 520 was nothing more than an expensive paperweight, until I purchased a set of spare alloys and Continental winter tyres. Then it easily drove through deep snow. My colleagues and I were all advanced drivers and had been taught to drive on snow and ice: but it all comes down to the tyres – especially with rear wheel drive vehicles.

    3. @UpsideDownFork Avatar
      @UpsideDownFork

      @klackon1  correct. It is about the tyres, not about whether it was FWD or RWD in that case.

      I lived in the Alps for 2 years and had to undertake advanced driver training including one week driving on a frozen lake.

      The vast majority of drivers in this day and age will never know or care whether their vehicle is FWD or RWD.

    A word or 2 about how it compares to other electric vans, such as the ID. Buzz Cargo or eSprinter wouldn’t go amiss.

    Great preview and so good to seeing Ford back to doing something it does really well but as an EV. Capri forgotten if the Transit is good enough. I hope this sells and sells and sells.

    Why did Ford think a 209-mile range was a plan, needed 250 mile range with 180 real-world range

    1. @Neojhun Avatar
      @Neojhun

      It’s not just the range 64kwh is an oddly small battery for this size of vehicle. 85 to 100kWh with denser energy battery tech is what this van needs.

    2. @christopherstubbs8130 Avatar
      @christopherstubbs8130

      I suspect they’ve prioritised load capacity. A bigger battery would probably knock the payload capacity below a ton, at which point you can forget sales to anyone other than inner city couriers.

    3. @markreed9853 Avatar
      @markreed9853

      @@Neojhun the main reason for a smaller battery is so it does not reduce the carrying capacity any more than needed.

      @TheTriumfAnt

      I think the charging speed is the bigger issue. 125 kW? 200 kW minimum and preferably 250 kW. Get the charging time down to 20-30 minutes.

      Most of their EVs are made by somebody else. And those they sell look kind of stupid and lumpy. I don’t expect Ford to be selling private passenger vehicles for much longer in Europe.

    Nicola as van man. Priceless. I laughed out loud at the cheeseburger bit. Nicola’s delivery of the “20” answer is hilarious, and her chucking the wrapper at the windscreen is spot on!

    Now for the serious bit: The range is pitiful. Ford need to up the capacity to somewhere between 80kWh to 100kWh and increase the DC charge speed to at least 150kW. Then I think they’ll have hit the mark.

    The tiny battery makes it cheaper, she exclaims. Without actually giving any clue what the price is.

    Or the real world range?

    Or the performance?

    Or how much carrying a ton affects the range?

    Does it have digital instruments?

    Etc

    Is there a part II to this video as there seems to be a lot missing.

  18. @ghost70 Avatar
    @ghost70

    Best thing about this video is the presenter :). Van does not look too bad just a shame its electric with poor range as real range is going to be just over 100 miles in real world and then over priced. The ice version have the eco boom wet belt engines , hence dont touch a ford from 2018-19 onwards.
