FIRST DRIVE: New Renault 5 electric! As good as it looks? | Electrifying.com

# #r 5etech #renault 5elelctric.

FULL EVALUATION:.

Re-inventing an icon is never ever an easy thing to do, but that's exactly what Renault is hoping to do with the reborn . Having actually seen MINI and Fiat successfully resurrect classic designs from the past, the French giant is betting big on its renowned supermini. It introduces a new age of electrical Renaults and will be followed into display rooms by a born-again Renault 4, which will also take styling cues from its popular predecessor..

There are 2 batteries up choose from; a 52kWh battery that offers the Renault a main WLTP series of 248 miles which will be the only choice from launch, while a smaller 40kWh battery handling 186 miles will be joining the lineup at a later date.

The E-Tech comes as standard with 11 kW bi-directional charging consisting of vehicle-to-load ability. This enables you to charge an electrical gadget – whether it's your laptop computer or an e-bike – from the 5's high voltage battery. It also suggests that the Renault supports vehicle-to-grid charging, which enables you to use the cars and truck's battery to help balance your home energy or perhaps to feed power back into the grid and make money from it at peak times. You do need a home charger that can supporting this function, though; not all home wallboxes can do this even if the car has the needed tech..

This bodes *extremely* well for the Alpine A290.

This is the sort of car the EV market needs now. We’ve had all the top end £40k plus stuff. Now it’s time for EV’s people will *want* to own….. I understand there are thousands of pre-orders already for this car…..

Hi Ginny, this takes me back! My first car was a 1974 Renault 12TS in bright yellow with a black roof. Not a bad car for the time, but oh, the rust! 🤣🤣🤣 My Mum had a Renault 6, followed by a Renault 5. Life was simple back then, manual choke, umbrella handbrake, dash mounted gear lever (just like the 2CV).

18 inch wheels are huge for a ‘small’ car. The original 5 would probably have had 12″ wheels!

@@terrencebiggane8648I think it’s because EVs have to be taller so the batteries can fit underneath. On the Zoe which has small/normal size wheels this makes it look oddly tall and ungainly. By putting on bigger wheels it tricks the eye into misreading the scale. I expect we’ll see more of this

It’s funny how youtubers try to find angles with polemical titles (and thumbnails) so as not to give the impression that this is going to be yet another laudatory, dithyrambic video for this little Renault 5. Well done, Renault, well done 😀

Bit of a disappointing review from Ginny. I drive a Megane and it has some quirks but is a really good car. The drive selector is easy to get used to even if French logic means R and D are not where you expect. The cable storage is exactly the same as on the Megane and frankly yes it could be a nuisance if you had to get to the cable with a boot full of stuff..but here’s the thing. I rarely carry the cable as away from I pretty much always use CCS rapid chargers so don’t need my cable. On the rare occasion I know I might (e.g a hotel 7kwh charger) I just find some space in the boot. Oh and yes the underfloor storage bit is actually the same issue in many EVs. As to the speech recognition..just say heh Google it is brilliant and amongst many things it will do is turn volume up and down and the same with temperature. Iam not a fan of Google but their car system is really good.

As to the rest..iam sure driving is a matter of taste and other journalist seem to like it and I may or may not if and when I have a test drive.

Final bit. Wind noise. I suspect the car you drove has the same problem I currently have and that needs fixing. Basically some of the windows are falling a small amount within the door. If you hit the raise window button it goes away.

Honest review. Good to hear. I don’t understand why ground up EV’s do not have 1 pedal driving or frunks. Simply no excuse not to have these at this stage of EV development. (BMW’s i3 had both from 2012/13). And real world efficiency for this is a concern (as it is for the Megane). Will wait to see what owners see after buying them. But an excellent price it must be said from a manufacturer that is not Chinese.

    1. @AlanTov Avatar

@@FGGiskard You don’t have to activate it if you don’t like it. The problem is that the setting doesn’t exist. Just give people the choices?
To answer the initial remark, I guess it’s somehow a relic trait of the corporate culture of historic carmakers. They like EVs to creep like ICE cars while in gear without even touching the gas pedal. And they are afraid that their usual customers could be unhappy of a change in behavior. But as I said: just give people choices! Allow the setting, just don’t make it the default one.

The stalk thing on new Renaults is no issue. Want gear, approach from top. Want wiper approach from bottom side. I drive a Mégane it’s easy. The audio stalk is haptic perfection and I wouldn’t have any other kind it’s been here since 1989.
