BMW iX3 vs Volvo EX60: Which Electric SUV Wins?

The BMW iX3 is our Automobile of the Year– but now it faces one of its hardest obstacles yet.
The brand new Volvo EX60 is here, assuring up to 503 miles of range, ultra-fast charging, smart security innovation and one of the most outstanding interiors in the premium EV class. However can it in fact knock the BMW iX3 off the top spot?

Nicola Hume and James Batchelor put the two head-to-head to learn which is the much better premium electrical SUV.

The BMW fights back with huge variety, 400kW charging, remarkable performance and a really interesting driving experience. The Volvo counters with a beautifully ended up cabin, extraordinary comfort, creative usefulness and a splendidly unwinded character.
So which one should you purchase?

In this twin test we compare their range, charging speeds, efficiency, practicality, interiors, innovation, convenience, driving experience and value for money– and reveal which one triumphes.

The BMW iX3 tested here has a 493-mile WLTP range, 469hp and charging of approximately 400kW. The Volvo EX60 P10 AWD has 410 miles of WLTP variety, 510hp and can charge at approximately 370kW.
Which would you pick– BMW iX3 or Volvo EX60? Let us know in the comments.

    I’ve spent a fair amount of time test-driving the new BMW iX3, Volvo EX60 yesterday afternoon and the Mercedes GLC Electric, as all three were on my shortlist.

    I actually had an iX3 on order, but after driving them back-to-back and having the chance to properly compare them, I cancelled my BMW order and went for the Mercedes GLC Electric instead.

    For me, the GLC just felt like the more complete package — particularly the refinement, comfort, interior quality and overall driving experience. The iX3 is undoubtedly an impressive EV and the Volvo was just great at being a volvo but I found it a boring place to be. The Mercedes simply suited what I was looking for better.

    Now I’m just patiently waiting for my GLC Electric to arrive! 😄

      I don’t think there is a bad choice out of all those 3 cars.

      The car reviewers, not only on this channel, refuse to note that it’s very easy to find lots of cheap plastic in recent BMW’s.
      The iX3 is just as bad as the more expensive iX in this regard.
      Perceived quality of BMW went south a few years ago.
      Chinese manufacturers Nio and Zeekr piss all over BMW for interior build and quality.

      Does the huge screen that takes up all of the dash not bother you in the Merc? I really love my tech but it looks crazy in the videos.

    As long as BMW wants you to rent features of the car that you already paid for, it will never be a consideration. Volvo, thanks

      @ChristianHauser78

      Well, some features like motorway assistant (that Volvo doesn’t even offer) are indeed for 4 years only, but that is partly due to regulations as BMW is not permitted to offer the motorway assistant forever. And the remote parking feature which I really do like is a feature that you’ll have forever unlike in an EX60 that does not offer remote parking.

    2. @KISS_paulstanley Avatar
      @KISS_paulstanley

      The remote parking is a niche tech gimmick, but not realistic in a UK car park. Yes, you can remote manoeuvre the car into a tight space, but a car either side won’t have that, so possibly dent your car door as they enter their car that is now millimetres from you lovely BMW.
      Great for the UK garages, but that it.

      @KISS_paulstanleyit‘s useful to get the car out of a tight space…

      But…. Per Nicola, at the 14:00, the BMW is the most fun car… So that would be my choice

    5. @thelorax9622 Avatar
      @thelorax9622

      I’m talking about more basic things. I’ve paid for the car. That should be it, and anything included should be able to be used. If you don’t want me to have it, don’t include it. Options suck, but at least if you pay for them, they should be yours.

    Looks wise, the BMW is just stuffed with angularity for the sake of it, inside and out… give me Scandi simplicity any day.

    Another great tête-à-tête from Nicola & Batch, and I love learning all those new words… One for the Team… Does anyone know when you are going to review the Genesis Magma, and another EV that maybe suited to someone within the team who likes Power with a bit of Bling 🙂

    Love your reviews, you are very entertaining and informative. Got the new iX3 and have been very impressed so far. Gone between Worcester and Hayle(Cornwall) a few times now with it, easily makes the journey on a single charge. The motorway journey with the driving assistance(steering/braking) was been brilliant and very relaxing, no issues with it so far. No issues comfort wise. Software is brilliant and sounds like a big update coming soon for it any day. For me the HUD with the sat nav maps/turns, corner warning etc has been better than the panoramic display(wish it had more widgets).

    Love that Nicola joined Batch with the trousers matching the car 😀 We cross shopped both for my wife’s next car and both are fantastic. She went EX60 because she likes Volvos, but she would have been very happy with the iX3. If you want a mid size electric SUV, try both of these and the Mercedes GLC and pick the one you like, they are all really good cars

    since there is no clear winner, i want to propose that you have a tiebreaker round in which all the SUBSCRIPTIONS are compared. what all exactly does BMW lock behind a MONTHLY paywall for your Car of the Year? Does Volvo do the same? if you need to pay 70-80£ to have adaptive cruise conteol, access to your top speeds, and the ability to auto-start the vehicle, that’s an nearly an additional 1000£ paid, EVERY YEAR you own the vehicle, even if you buy it outright in cash. As these fees become more ubiquitous, i expect them to appear in the video coverage they receive. it would be different if these were cosmetic infotainment upgrades im talking about, these features influence the overall ownership experience. thanks for making these enjoyable vids!
