It's not simply everybody that are a bit skint in January– the vehicle makers are feeling the
pinch too, and that means they are trying to shift stock. That indicates there are some
real out there.
Just a couple of years ago there was a waiting list for vehicles and now there are some
insane offers and dealers pleading for your company. How does half rate sound …?

My pick is the Volvo EX30 LR RWD (Twin Motor version is terribly inefficient and the chassis cannot cope with the extra speed!). Volvo dealers routinely giving £10k off nearly new/delivery mileage cars. A little less on advertisement (£8-£9k off) but they are still open to haggling and discounting further as we found! A no brainer for a compact, well equipped and agile EV with a big 69kWh battery!

The man who started the auction sourcing business is Johnathan Porterfield; he has a youtube channel and is currently enjoying a holiday in Spain in his Kia e-Niro!

Indeed! Jonathan Porterfield was responsible for talking me into buying my first LEAF from him in 2016, and I am forever grateful. 🙏🏼

I’m amazed that you don’t know Jonathan Porterfield – he’s a legend in the EV world. He’s retired now, but the company he started, Eco Cars, is still sourcing vehicles for people. Unfortunately they’ve put their fees up recently so it can now be cheaper to just go straight to a dealer to buy a second hand ev.

I will start donating to my own ID7 swear box as the intial delivery date of late March (17 weeks from order) has just been slashed to less than 10 weeks and it could be arriving at the end of the month ! Slighty confused how suddenly it appears like magic, now just have to get the charger installed in time !

Jonathan Porterfield is a well known EV supporter seen at many EE shows, now retired he still dabbles and does regular YT sessions on Car Auctions , currently on Spanish Hols! Have had a few cars from him, now there is a company in Orkney still procuring cars to order.

this will just continue. We are on a tech curve and each release sees a new car with new tech. Next stage is MG and their semi solid batteries with increased range and charging. So more than ever as soon as you have one it is out of date very quickly. ICE cars not changed for decades and people are not used to this with cars, well buckle up naysayers.

      @michaeldendulk2230

BYD might actually get a solid-state battery on the road before MG, it’s a bit of a race. MG is expected to first have them in their large EV SUV towards the end of the year (big brother for the ES5), BYD hasn’t released any specifics others than 2025 so far.

We did the maths and have just swapped our 2019 Zoe for a brand new 2025 ID.3 Pro Match 59kWh for £192/mth on 12+23 @6k/yr – vastly cheaper than the depreciation even on a discounted car. For our other car, we just swapped to a 1-year-old Renault Megane e-Tech with 1,500 miles on the clock for £23k – some £16k under list price. It pays to look around and do the maths!

A really useful round up, thank you. What screams out at me is the one thing you do not want to do is buy a car outright and take the risk of the residual value in 3-5 years time. With such discounts to the new list price on offer you are taking on significant financial risk if you do not lease or PCP. The other thing that strikes me is that the great discounts are not on the cars I really want to buy with the possible exception of the hugely discounted Taycan, though the Taycan is just too big and heavy for my use case. I did nearly buy an Ariya E-4force in 2023, but cancelled when the delivery date was put back by six months so that example in your piece was interesting.

Sadly, we’ve reached the point where hype, incentives and demand from the early adopters have now been superseded by ownership reality and a very reticent majority who can see the problems people have experienced. For me, I’m not comfortable with Lion batteries and will wait until -at the very least- LiFePo becomes a more mainstream fitment.

Picked up my new MG5 yesterday (Trophy Long Range for GBP 23k brand new + very good trade in deal on my ‘old car’, around 1k more than others were offering). From what I understood from the dealer, MG5’s are completely sold out and they are shifting their attention to clearing out ZS stock now, ahead of the UK launch of the new ES5 in April. He said the ZS is still selling relatively well compared to what the MG5 was doing, so the deals will probably not be as aggresive.

MG is offering some fantastic deals right now! I just booked a brand-new, unregistered ZS EV Long Range (72kWh) Trophy version for just under £21k. It’s an incredible value for money—no other manufacturer offers a new car at this price point. If you’re in the market for a new car, I highly recommend considering MG for the price.

For anyone interested, the Kia Soul info is incorrect. The 33 mile car at £17k ISN’T the top spec/long range car that was £39k new, but the base model with smaller battery (cost much, much less when new). The better model seems to start at around £25k with low miles on, but it’s a fantastic car and a great buy at that.

if you never leased a car before, read everything there is to know about private leasing. It’s not a flexible arrangement at all. Not in a million years would I recommend taking an EV via lease considering second hand market and what the car is actually worth after a year or two. You will never get out early of such agreement (unless you pay it off in full or find somebody else to take over the lease) as your used EV will be worth so little and a termination payment sky high. Be warned.

We have just handed back our leased Citroen E-C4 (which we loved) and were chasing after the Nissan Ariya… However, the Manchester based company that are offering these special prices on the Ariya and very cheeky. As soon as you show interest, the prices go up! With the BS excuse that “those models are gone, but we can offer….” You then find the £315/mth is suddenly nearly £400/mth!!
We gave up on the dodgy Ariya deal and purchased a Mercedes EQC (1 owner from new) for £314 per month!
