Living With The Toyota C-HR+ Real World Review and Range Test

My first experience with a Toyota EV was not a fantastic one to be honest. Can the new Toyota C= HR+ impress me and deliver the numbers in pledges?

I saw the title and thought you couldn’t have timed this better as the c-hr – but then realised it’s the plus and the c-hr is the one on the extended shortlist I’ve just given the parents – they want the hybrid, not the Bev.

    Love the new thumbnail style.

I really like the styling and that is impressive efficiency. Another factor is the warranty, up to a million miles! I expect to see quite a few used as taxis. Yes, the black is a poor choice of colour.

It’s not suitable as a taxi due to the poor space in the back. Possibly the BZ4 would be ok.

Really good review. Surprisingly good efficiency from this, coming from Toyota who have been notoriously reticent about becoming an EV brand. It seems to come across as a typical Toyota. OK looks, average feeling cabin but will work reliably and faultlessly and will probably never let you down. My only slight concern is their much vaunted “10 year warranty” which tends to tie you into annual and expensive servicing to keep the warranty going. And as we all know there is not much to service on an EV. The first in cabin shot of you made you look as if you were sitting ON the cabin instead of IN the cabin! Which is what you mentioned anyway!

Thank for this, I’ve just ordered the Icon spec with the smaller battery as we don’t go that far but this has confirmed that I’ve made a good choice.

We’ve owned one of these for 4 months now….great car for ferrying the grandkids about, range is great too !…the Infotainment feels under developed (hopefuly to be updated over the air), the car beeps alot when being locked, in random ‘beep’ numbers…which is partly down to it confusing kids seats installed in the back as someone actually sitting in the back while you’re locking it…but overall a great comfortable, super cheap to run car !….PCP deals at 0% and 10 year warranty are pretty helpful too…

What about 12 volt battery draining issues, leave car for 5 days and let me know if it will start

Thanks for this, it’s interesting because I did consider this car…. But the back doors didn’t open wide enough to get a child seat in very easily and the front seats were deep set into the middle, making it difficult to get out and over the sills without getting dirt over your trousers as you ‘slide’ over the sills… ( Being such a tall chap, you probably didn’t experience this!). I am also surprised about the poor range you experienced… I bought an MG4 Premium Extended Range with WLTP of about 338 miles … I drive to Manchester quite often, which for me is 234 miles, and arrive there with just over 100 miles range left. I have found I only need one half hour charge to put enough miles back in to get me home, the range meter in the car seems to adapt to my driving style and the conditions… from your review am very happy with my choice over the CHR + …. Thanks for the content, I always find your reviews to be excellent 👍

Been waiting 15 weeks so far for my CHR+ excel version with JBL and pano roof. ETA now is sometime in November supposedly. TBH if I’d known the lead time was going to be this long I’d have ordered something else.

Good review and test. Toyota do seem to make great EVs although what that range would look like in cold winter would be interesting to see

Early reports are that at -40c you are at half range (between NMC battery and heating).

I test drove one a while back and was really impressed. It was the first EV that I’ve driven for any length of time and I found it to be really good. Not as good as the MINI Countryman All4 SE though, which I ended up ordering.

Good to see Toyota finally coming out with something a bit more competitive on the EV front – it’s about time.

Just a great review, I had a CHR plug in hybrid and was a great car but for me at 6’5 bit tight for back seat passengers and it had a small battery but still a great car, its good to see that ev’s are getting better on a full charge and as fuel is so expensive phev’s and ev’s are defo the way forward if your lucky like me to have off road charging available I put very little fuel ⛽️ in my now skoda kodiaq phev its unreal, great review love the long journey tests lets see more of the same as your very goid at what you do would love more of a week in the life of a utube car reviewer, keep up the great work Pete 👏🙌❤️

Over 4 m/kWh on mainly motorway type roads is pretty good efficiency, looks a good car if you can cope with the instrument layout.

Good review and a reasonably nice car is a very competitive segment. It’s a real shame that they don’t offer the AWD 338 hp version in the UK as I imagine that would be a hoot!

A neighbour has just got one on mobility.
They’re getting around 320miles on a full charge at the moment.
Seems very nice and smooth. Infotainment is a bit laggy compared to my Tesla though.
Clearly Toyota is capable of producing a decent EV!

    Great review Pete, thanks.
    A proper journey. 👍

My Lexus LBX 1.5 hybrid consistently beats the WLTP figures by at least 10% and way more on some particular journeys.😏🤓 Although I haven’t done a winter yet…..🤔 ….
    Cheers. ❤

Probably a great choice for a family of sub 5’6” people. I’m 6’2” and ruled it out with 10 seconds of sitting in it.

Your reviews are pretty thorough. Strange so many haters in reviews on other cars? Can’t handle brutal honesty lol. My wife has Corolla hybrid (2nd one now GR now Excel) just feels plasticky with cheap software? I’ve run VWs for some years and the quality difference is poles apart.
