Peugeot e-208 GTi: Is THIS the Electric Hot Hatch We’ve Been Waiting For?

The famous GTi badge has actually gone electrical, and Nicola Hume gets behind the wheel of the brand-new Peugeot e-208 GTi to find out whether this little EV has the attitude and driving fun to live up to the name.

With 281hp and 345Nm, the e-208 GTi can sprint from 0– 62mph in simply 5.5 seconds, while Peugeot Sport has actually offered it a serious mechanical makeover. It's 25mm lower, larger at both ends, gets a mechanical limited-slip differential, custom suspension, bigger brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.

And then there's the crucial bit: how does it really drive?
Nicola puts the GTi through its paces to see whether Peugeot has handled to make an electric hot hatch that feels really playful instead of simply very quickly.

There's also a look at the GTi's styling and interior, including its red detailing, Alcantara steering wheel, sports seats and GTi-specific display screens.

However what about the less interesting numbers? The e-208 GTi uses a 51kWh usable battery, has up to 233 miles of WLTP variety depending upon the tyres, and can charge at up to 100kW DC, taking around thirty minutes to go from 20– 80%.

At ₤ 34,995 consisting of the ₤ 1,500 Electric Car Grant, it isn't low-cost– and there's currently another electrical GTi on the horizon in the shape of the Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI.

So, is the Peugeot e-208 GTi the electrical hot hatch we've been waiting for?
Nicola Hume has the response.

    Irn Bru has a lot to answer for.

    Who let Nicola lay into the Corby Cava? The sugar rush was prominent by the video’s end. I hope Tunnocks were provided to complement the Irn-Bru.

    Another good review – thanks. It seems Stellantis have given the suspension / drive train / brakes a real work over. A shame they didn’t let the electronics make use of it all.

    You were not far from where I live and work so I am usually driving the same roads as you did all the time, I could have come up and been a Nicola fan boy 😂 🎊🎊🤸

    Nicola, you are fantastic!
    Really clear in your descriptions!
    And always funny. Thank you.

    This is definitely much better looking than it’s Opel cousin, Peugeot nailed hothatchness , this GTi looks great. And with power, some interior trim, and hopefully properly developed suspension – makes it really promising.
    Nicola thanks for this review can’t believe we got it before Ginnys Renault 5 Turbo 3E 😅😅💪💪⚡⚡⚡

      yeah, but she says the brakes are not that great, so I would not use it as a track car, as we did with the old 205 gti.

    People used to complain the 207 GTi brakes were too sharp, when Peugeot Sport took over the GTi with the 208 and 308 they were noticeably softened. Still perform well, as in you pull up fast and won’t get any fade, just no knee jerk type of stops 🤣

      Absolutely. This thing is totally anonymous. I wouldn’t look twice if it drove past. Shame as i’m a big 205 Gti fan. The A290 isn’t quite as quick on paper but is in a different league visually.

      I’ll keep my 208 gti by peugeot sport which will be more valued than the toaster there

      @Howdy606

      @ruibispo9139 As a 205 GTI enthusiast (both 1.6 & 1.9), I think the A290 is 1000 x better looking than the bulbus forgettable 208 Gti. Only a mother could love it, It’s hideous.

    4. @ruibispo9139 Avatar
      @ruibispo9139

      @Howdy606 I’m talking about the last gen, after the 30th aniversary, the definitive edition, which still looks far better than both electrics

    5. @Howdy606 Avatar
      @Howdy606

      @ruibispo9139 Yes. That’s the one i’m referring to. Sorry, but it’s hideous. Very boring looking. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Peugeot need to do a 205 GTI but step away from that horrid 208 design. I think they could do something really good if they made the effort. (and i’m a big Peugeot fan).

    The only negative, is Stellantis have NOT updated their Battery Packs or Charging in at least 4 years. Meaning they are well behind the competition. Or looking from another angle their residual values will drop faster as they drop further behind the competition.

      Don’t they have an all new model coming soon? I know Ford used to release performance models (RS and ST) near the end of a production run, just as a new version was due. I guess they do this to get some more life out of a car that’s 6-7 years old by that point.

      I don’t know much about the history of Stellantis and limited editions but assume it’s the same?

    Whoopsie! We forgot to take the grant pricing off in our graphics!

    For clarity, the E-208 GTI will cost £34,995 before the UK plug-in car grant – £33,495 with deductions – apologies!

    I first had an e-208 6 years ago.. Why on earth have they waited this long for a gti version. The all-new e-208 must be just around the corner? Madness

    1. @LeeOades Avatar
      @LeeOades

      We still have ours from June 2020 and still absolutely love it. We been considering upgrading it to improve on the disappointing range but ultimately still haven’t felt the need to.

  14. @ricequackers Avatar
    @ricequackers

    The biggest problem with the GTI is that the new e-208 is just around the corner, which will bring a lot of improvements in the tech and drivetrain. Also we need a head-to-head against the A290, Raval VZ and the Polo GTI at some point.

    And I’m quite sure Nicola is still secretly doing handbrake turns and burnouts at night in a McDonald’s car park, even before the Irn Bru.

    1. @stevencampbell1150 Avatar
      @stevencampbell1150

      Good luck with that as it doesn’t have a proper handbrake for a start.

    I really think Nicola would be very good presenting a certain Amazon car show, she has a brilliant sense of humour which would really work well, but if I’m honest I still prefer the A290 Alpine

    Love, love the red carpet. Reminds me of my Renault 5 GT Turbo back in the day. Corsa GSi or 208 GTI. If it wasnt for the the old tech, I would get one.
