Has Mercedes finally got it right? | C-Class Electric first drive

The competition is back. For decades it was BMW 3 Series vs Mercedes C-Class. Now, both have actually gone electric, and the fight for executive EV supremacy has begun.

In this very first drive evaluation, Ginny heads to Finland to check the brand new Mercedes C-Class Electric. Developed on a devoted EV platform, it assures approximately 472 miles of variety in UK requirements, 489hp, ultra-rapid 330kW charging, and all the high-end you 'd get out of a Mercedes.
However is it enough to ward off the upcoming BMW i3, or is the Tesla Design 3 still the car to beat?

With its whisper-quiet cabin, impressive refinement and uncomplicated motorway manners, the electric C-Class feels every bit like a Mercedes should. But with prices starting from ₤ 57,995, can it validate costing considerably more than crucial competitors?

    I think of executive cars as being a 5-series vs the E-class, not 3 vs C.

      I used to as well, but now 3-series and C-class have grown to the same size that 5-series and E-class used to have, while 5-series has grown to large for most public parking spots in Europe.

      Essex Mondeos as they were known. Too many on the road now to be classed as executive. Can’t say I’d go for a C Class, just too bling for me.

    Im disapointed they have removed the grab handels.
    It means I can’t consider the car as my will struggle to get in and out,
    Its the same reason my dad had to change his EQS out.

    Will there be an estate version though? 😊- Also there are very few 22kw chargers becuase it requires 3 phase, so offering it is bit of a walk for little return

      Pretty sure I read that there would not be an estate out of this one. Apparently GLC is what to buy if you want more room. Less models to produce I suppose. I’d love to be wrong though 🙂

    I am just so massively thrilled to see big car brands go electric! 15 years ago I did a high school presentation in class on electric cars and how I knew they were the future. At the time we basically just had the Nissan Leaf and the Tesla Roadster. Some of my classmates thought I was crazy, but here we are 15 years later, and we’ve got some INCREDIBLE long range EVs from big car manufacturers! Now they are turning their classic cars into EVs and people are LOVING them! Absolutely amazing!

    Quite good! They’re asking too much for this though (same with the new GLC EV). Totally agree that the lack of track skipping buttons on the steering wheel is a miss – hopefully something they will correct for the mid-cycle refresh.

    Hi Ginny,
    I’m currently configuring a new electric Mercedes C-Class, and I’m trying to decide between the MBUX Hyperscreen and the head-up display — unfortunately, my budget doesn’t allow for both.
    My current EV has a head-up display, so I’ve become very used to having it. However, I’m wondering whether it might be less necessary in the new C-Class because of the driving position and the large driver display.
    What was your experience during the test drive? If you could only choose one of the two options, which would you go for?
