That range thing is why Tim has gone back to the slightly upgraded basic 5 which has better range

Short journeys are often less efficient as so much energy is spent heating or cooling the cabin, rather than just maintaining the temperature. You’ll find on a longer journey; where range matters, it will do a decent bit better.

I do like the exterior. If it was mine I would have a mat rap on the side skirts & have a piece of velcroed cloth on the carpet to roll out & drape over the sill before getting in & out.

I’d say the R5 would be the better choice. Not driven the BYD

I compare this to our i3S, a little bit quirky, similar range/performance but adding a few more electric gizmos. At different times we have seen 200 mile range from our 42.5kwh battery but it’s the efficiency where the BMW stands out regularly hitting 4~4.2 miles per kwh. We will run the i3 for a while but should we change then the R5 will defo be on our radar.

For the the bigger issue (with our e208 which shows range or about the same 170ish miles) is that the range just isn’t realistic, we normally use the car in eco to get a little bit longer range and even then with normal driving, mix of 30 and 60mph roads we typically see a 30mile journey using 40-45 miles of range, so realistically out of the 170 miles range we might actually be able to get 120-130 actual miles. It just isn’t good enough!

Man, it looks good in that colour! I wonder if the manufacturers still have the small car mindset, i.e., thinking that they are mainly used for short trips. But I think, with things like cost of living and the higher entry price point, a lot of these could be seen as main cars. I wonder if the newer gen cars like the ID Polo with its long range will change that going forward.

Love the colour but I would be absolutely paranoid about keeping it clean!

Great video, do love the way that car looks,& I liked that colour too, but less than 200 miles range!!😖

Ok, ok my daily commute is usually just shy of 30miles so I could do most of my journeys with a car like that , but it’s just those times when you want to go further, and the thoughts of being left to the mercy of the public infrastructure!

Currently still running a MK8 fiesta ST, but I’m am looking at/wanting to change, but I suspect the alpine would be compromised in the same areas the fiesta is in terms of hard ride/cabin noise/build quality etc etc.

my reanult scenic range drops alot after a few stabz of the throttle, as it measures it kinda live and assumes the rest of the battery will be depleted in a similar fashion, but it soon recovers after 5 -10 mins of ‘normal’ driving again….that said, on paper its 375 mile range is never north of 300 in reality

I looked on the alpine website and it says range is 224 km
    So 166 miles is good

I have a GTS. You need to reset the KWH setting. I get 220 miles on 100% charge. Agree re spirited driving but it’s a great fun car and worth the compromise on range

Good vid Pete. To be honest, when it’s too hot, it’s almost as bad as being too cold. The battery and car need cooling , which uses a lot of juice. The sweet spot is mid teens to mid twenties Celsius.

Spot on, temperature makes a huge difference to the efficiency. 👍

Completely agree with the skirts for getting in and out and the mileage issue I went for the grey and love it and I got myself a cracking cup holder for £37 off eBay which sits where the wireless charger is it’s a must 👌

Great video Ped. It’s interesting that from the reviews I’ve watched on this car you’ll putting a real world experience on the actual reality! There is one thing on the R5, the Nissan Micro and this Alpine I don’t like and it’s the headling it reminds me of the foam packaging I used to get surrounding IT kit when I was an engineer
