    Is the Chevy Equinox EV also bidirectional?
    Do the 2025 GM EVs come with LFP batteries?

      @EVBuyersGuide

      According to the GM Energy website the 2024 Equinox is compatible though it may require a visit to the dealer or an OTA update to enable the function. GM is going to transition to LFP in some instances but I don’t know exactly what will and won’t come with that chemistry. -Travis

      @@EVBuyersGuide I believe you need the 19.5kw charging upgrade to get the bi direction changing

      That limitation applies to V2L (vehicle outputting AC) but I don’t think it applies to the GM Energy V2H system (vehicle outputting DC).

      @@FredSEd-x9d only for V2V or V2L. V2H uses the DC pins on the CCS port and will work regardless if you have the 19.2 kW onboard charger.

    Thing about comparing chargers from other manufactures, those would not work with GM’s system for Bidirectional charging V2H.

      That’s the point though, these ecosystems created by OEMs only work for their brand at the moment. -Travis

      @ yes at this moment because they are ahead of the standards bodies.

      Then how did dcbel create its more efficient faster DC only based V2X Energy Management System ? the ISO V2X protocols actually already exist …. they just haven’t been officially adopted… which will take place in 2025…. but at least the Volvo EX 90 is compatible with it now….

      So proprietary systems are not the only or necessarily the best option, unless a buyer is committed to just sticking with one particular OEM …. Closed in ecosystems definitely have advantages, Tesla and Apple have proven that… But you give up the freedom of choice….

      Plus many other companies have committed to enter the space….

    GM has had other interviews where they are waiting for the standards bodies to ratify interoperability for V2H once that is done and companies adopt it then these systems will work no matter what vehicle you buy.

      Let’s hope. But the GM reps I’ve heard interviewed stated the exact opposite.. It’ll only be for GM EVs. So before buying it, get a commitment in writing with a specific date and a refund policy, if it doesn’t happen.. Since its current proprietary nature keeps buyers locked into GM EVs. So it’s unlikely GM will give up that advantage easily.

      FWIW, there are already superior existing non-proprietary options, such as from dcbel on the market. And other companies have promised to get into the markets, After the V2X protocols are finalized. Plus if all you need is V2H and your vehicle has a built-inverter. There are much simpler and cheaper options.

    It’s illogical to buy fixed ESS when you can own batteries that are 60% the price that you can also drive.

    Over cycling endangers the mandated 8 year battery warranty.

    Somewhere there is the right answer. We cannot be asked to buy more batteries.

    One solution may be allowing cycling provided the battery is not charged beyond 65%. And that can be a software solution.

    this is too high profile big chunks of stuff I look at that inverter and I think is that a solid-state inverter? And I know the Sol state batteries are coming up soon. Everything could be much smaller much more streamline.

    The Cybertruck on board AC conversion is sooo much cheaper easier to install and can switch in 2 seconds from a power outage, feels like the strategy that will win out in the long term

    GM states that all their EV’s (that use don’t call it Ultium) support this system

    1. @nc3826 Avatar
      @nc3826

      What about compatibility issues after the J3400/NACS (i’ve heard a GM rep state that they are committed to using adapters but that opens additional issues) and with other EVs? Plus what a GM rep (or any rep) says in an interview, isn’t worth anything…. It has to be in writing into the sales agreement to really matter….

      Call me cynical, but for a major investment like this there’s still too many open questions IMHO

  9. @nc3826 Avatar
    @nc3826

    Travis thanks for the thorough review of another V2X Energy Management System. As you pointed out the main issue is will they remain proprietary. The buyer locked into that particular OEM, for future EV purchases? Plus how will these handle the transition to J3400? I heard a GM rep say they’ll use adapters but that has its own issues.

    Hopefully you’ll do a comparison and contrast, review of the various systems. That are likely to hit the market after the V2X ISO protocols Are officially approved in 2025.
