Oh wow. Gotta get some security cameras with your chargers now a days unfortunately. People are scum.

We have Ring cameras, but the theft occurred suspiciously at the same time as a 20 minute power outage…

Ring cams don’t stop junkies. Source: am head of security in my community.

You could create a Anderson SB-100 to J1772 cable

OUr office has outside chargers but they are inside large locked cabinets. Employees are issued a key if they want charging privileges.

      That was our other option.

You underestimate what a junkie will do for 20 bucks.

I’ve honestly been expecting this to happen to your EVSEs since you installed them. People are, for the most part, absolute these days and will destroy stuff just because they can. I was surprised you didn’t install your EVSEs inside large locking cabinets from the get go. I always wondered why the untethered EVSE didn’t become popular in the States- they could simply used the type 2 J1772 connector on the EVSE and then have the Type 1 J1772 or Tesla connector on the other end then companies could have promoted their EVSEs as “Universal.”

The locking cabinets are a pain, especially with longer cables, but we may revisit that. It’s also a bummer with the bigger EVSEs that occupy more space.

@@EVBuyersGuideIt’s worth it to make your own custom cabinets. If you make them out of wood, it’s rather affordable and can look good too. 🙂

So, you could disconnect under load, but I don’t think it will arc or do anything bad. The ground pin is longer than the power pins, so it disconnects first, which cuts the power. J1772 doesn’t need the car to preemptively stop charging, it’s just a nice-to-have, and a polite way to stop a charge.

In fact, I had an EVSE for about 8 years that had a bad latch, and I loved it because I didn’t need to get permission from the car to remove it. Never had an issue.

Maybe *_non-plug-in hybrids_* would be a better idea. I heard Toyota has those pretty well sorted.

It’s weird how the assumption that the people doing this are drug addicts has become the dominant story line.

If I remember correctly from watching old videos shot at your office, you have roll up doors there. Why didn’t you install the evse inside, and just close the door over the cable when charging?
