Thats not exactly overengineered. It looks properly engineered to me, allowing for storage space very easily, and then a simple button press when you need to hold a drink.

      I agree

Agree as well. Late 90’s and early 00’s seemed to be peak overengineering (especially by the Germans) for cupholder deployment.

A cupholder should be a hole that you put the cup in not a button. Of course it’s over engineered. What are you a fucking rocket scientist

Got to re gain that storage space. Better than useless cup holders like the ones in old German cars

I think it’s not over the top, it’s perfect. If it were up to me, instead of this button and spring system, I’d make it a manual crank for greater durability.

My old a4 had one where ya push it in, then it popped out and became a cup holder was awesome.

    Bro, over-engineering is an art

It is necessary. As someone with both a Kia and Hyundai vehicle, those retractable cup holders are wonderful.

Have a Hyundai vehicle it’s a palisade and it’s the most unreliable, garbage vehicle I’ve ever owned. Never getting that crap again

Maybe it’s because you can use it as a storage space if you don’t use it like a cupholder, it’s very well built 👌

I have an e-Niro with these – they’re brilliant. Space for other stuff or drinks – at least you have options!

I think its well thought of, considering storage.

Because almost no one in europe uses that. We don’t have a culture of going to drive-thru and eat inside the car. So it is better to have space to store the wallet or purse

Modern cars turning cupholders into NASA projects was not on my bingo card! 😅
