Renault Clio Esprit Alpine – Sensible Stylish Fun for £25k ! | 4K

The new hybrid E-Tech Esprit Alpine is a sheep in wolf's clothing but it makes total sense. Great stylish appearances, quality interior and the economy of a hybrid. The huge concern is how does it drive?

A more egalitarian car with an egalitarian price. Not all cars NEED to cost north of £100,000 to be appealing, do they? Is there hope for budget buyers of new cars? Maybe.
Driving an old friend’s Honda Insight hybrid…with a manual gearbox…was engaging. Having somethng like that today is a pipe dream, I realise!
That colour is nice, because…it’s a colour! Not institutional grey. Thumbs up, Renault.

Renault’s new range is really quite nice to drive. I’ve driven the 1.0 Clio and it was surprisingly good to drive and perky too, comfortable, economical, and relaxing. The only thing I find with all these small capacity turbo engines is that they can be a pain to get off the line cleanly – you have to ensure it’s hooked up and rolling, otherwise it can get bogged down and hesitate. Nice car, nice colour, nice styling, I just wish they did a manual, or an auto with paddles. Thanks for the video.

Hi Pete! You’re having a blast of a drive up and down Alpine passes! 😊 Meanwhile, first thing I did after work was to watch this video on a very tempting car indeed! You have summed it up nicely. It is the sensible car right now whilst still being enjoyable to own or lease, especially here in France where you can add up to 60 k€ eco-tax on top of the price of sports cars!!! Insane!!! Enjoy your getaway together. Have fun. Cheers, Tom

glad to hear you say those seats are very comfy, because as i say almost everytime i comment, i’m pro EV, and top of my list in December when i am due a change is the e-scenic esprit alpine with those seats, might look closer at one of these now too, 60mpg aint too shabby

    Another great review Ped.

I owned a Mk 1 Clio 1.4 back when they were new for about 6 weeks. It was a great little car but the driver of a furniture removal van didn’t think so and wrote it off for me, forcing me to get a 19 16v. We’ve had a couple of other clios over the years and they’ve been really good. The missus was about to get one of the ones you’ve tested here but then the 5 e tech was announced and a deposit put down on one of those instead.

Design wise, I think Renault are on top form at the moment.

    I picked mine up a
month ago exactly like this. I’m over the moon with it even coming from an i20N. The interior quality is mega and if you
ask me is on par if not better than the, albeit boring, Polo. MPG is astounding too. I genuinely love driving it. Great review as always!

Had mine exact same spec since January. Just over 5000 miles in and averaging 61.1 mpg. Great little car with everything in it. Came from a 2019 polo gti and don’t really miss the extra performance

I suspect it wasn’t actually 40c (in the UK) but I can believe it was over 30c. Nice car to drive on a nice day!

I like it. I drove the pre-facelifted version in the south of France a couple of years back, and was impressed. Sure it is not a “Hot Hatch”, but it gave you was more than sprightly performance, the sport mode really does give it more urgency, and the fact it I got over 50mpg in the Camargue region, just be pottering about on their A-roads and motorways (D and N and autoroutes), makes me feel that Renault have nailed the self-charging hybrid. Kudos to them and the Alpine version looks great. 0-60 times really no longer apply, it is the overall performance that matters today on our clogged up roads, and the Clio more than meets that.

Oh yes .. loved this car but , it’s a far cry from the Clio V6 I remember and loved . What a car that was Pete .
I hope Renault will keep Clio but , i fear it might go …more sooner than we think ❤❤

I’ve had mine since October. In that colour and trim. It’s great. I really like it. Looks great and handles pretty well.

Got the pre face lift rs line version and have also driven this version, lovely cars to drive, regularly getting 65 mpg, also drove from Cornwall to Paris no problem, quiet good road manors,

Interesting test. A few weeks ago I took my son and his wife to collect their Dacia Jogger hybrid, which I think has the same power train. They get 60mpg on a motorway run and 50+ around town. While at the dealer, I sat in several Renaults and like you was very impressed by the quality of the interiors.

I bet the ex-RS engineers at Alpine were gagging to put a 1.6 turbo kind of hybridy engine in that, paint it Liquid Yellow and give it 250 ish bhp. No paddles is a bit of an odd choice, too. I feel like that would’ve given it at least luke-warm hatch credentials.

£25k, wow, what a lot of car for reasonable money. More reviews like this please Pedro.. Great to see what’s on the market for future cars. Cheers

Definitely an affordable car, which is exactly what all the manufacturers have missed to date, most motorists will want what this provides. Pat on the back for Renault then.

Good review Pete however that drivers cockpit looks like it came out of the Renault Zoe parts bin. My 2020 GT135 Zoe was just like the inside of that car as far as the dashboards concerned. LOL
