I had full Winter tyres on my old Mazda MX-5 (daily driver, 365 days of the year). I had no issues at all driving on snow other than when it was so deep and rutted that I simply ran out of ground clearance. On leaving for work one morning (moderately steep hill to get off the estate) I had to drive around an AWD SUV of some sort which was unable to make forward progress.

RWD is better on hills than FWD and practically indistinguishable on flat ground. The only reason people say FWD is better on snow is because they don’t know how to handle minor oversteer and FWD on snow is just an endless understeer fest with no end in sight so it feels very safe to them.

@@stuntvistNot really, the reason front wheel drive is better in bad weather is you have the weight of the engine over the drive wheels giving it better traction. To get the same traction on rear wheel drive you need to put 350kgs in the boot.

I used to have a ’99 540 BMW, and drove it one winter in Canada. Winter tires were absolutely no match for even the slightest of inclines. I cannot count the number of times neighbours came to give me a light push because I’d parked on a side of the street with a slight incline!

I live in WA State. The title is straight facts. But also the suspension and manufacturer matter. I hated my Subaru Impreza AWD but love my Mitsubishi Outlander SEL AWC. AWC/AWD is a must for hiking and snowboarding and other activities here.

They should also test all season tires, instead of winter tyres, against those summer tyres.

Not really a big issue if it doesn’t snow in your area, it’s better to have a suitable set of tyres for your conditions, if that happens when you are in a hill you just slide off the ledge. Also people get around with chains to gain traction not sure how effective they might be but I like to think a significant for summer tyres

@RanveerGupta-cn6lm it snows like once every two years on average here. Summer tires is all you need, unless you want the tires to last you longer while you sacrifice performance. All season only add snow abilities to a summer tire.
A winter tyre, I have no clue about, but I assume they are even better than all season for their snow abilities.
As for chains, they aren’t allowed in most states, areas of the country, etc unless it’s really packed high with snow… which I’ve rarely experienced in my life

WA State is where I call home. The title is factual. However, the manufacturer and suspension are also important. I adore my Mitsubishi Outlander SEL AWC but detested my Subaru Impreza AWD. Hiking, skiing, and other activities here require AWC/AWD.

Summer tires are like sled skids on snow. No matter how light or heavy, summer tires on snow are a danger to oneself and everyone around.

I’ve driven up snowy hills in my Subaru with summer tyres and it was perfect very sure footed.
Maybe that is more hard pack ice or the 4wd system isn’t as good as Subaru. -

The difference in car also had importance, the AWD was a different model with different hp, different torque and different weight to the 2wd.

the result would be exactly the same if the cars were the same. In fact if you put both awd then the one with the winter tyres would win by even more.

@@SoreHead11 I know, tires would still win, but the AWD car was done dirty, if it was a lighter car with less torque and power, it would be able to at least climb up the hill.

This is actually proof that the driver matters! Guy in the AWD has no idea what he’s doing and is a complete liability. That’s how I would expect an old lady to react while sliding. Pretty embarrassing tbh…

I get you’re trying to prove a point but why have traction control off? It wasn’t a proper test for it then because AWD system with traction control on would’ve done much better.

Thats the problem if you can’t drive in snowy conditions. Where I’m from it’s part of a driving course.
