New AMG SL 55 vs old AMG SL 55: DRAG RACE

It's time for an AMG SL face-off!!

We have actually got our hands on the all-new –, and it will go head-to-head over the quarter-mile against a traditional SL 55 from 2004!

So which is much better? Well, let's have a look at the statistics! The old SL rolls up with a 5.5-litre supercharged V8 under the bonnet that can normally provide 490hp and 700Nm. Nevertheless, the one we've got our hands on has been tuned, and can now deliver 625hp! It s equipped with RWD, and it weighs in at 1,885 kg.

As for the new SL, the supercharged V8 has been switched for a 4-litre twin-turbo V8. This can put down 476hp and 700Nm, which implies it's down on power compared to the . Nevertheless, it has one key advantage … It includes AWD!

So what do you believe, will it be a clean sweep for the new SL? And more importantly, will it reveal that it's worth the eye-watering ₤ 147,000 price?!

      @Rohan R Rohan R, the 2023 SL 55 has 16bhp less than 2004 version. The 2023 has 481 whilst 2004 version has 497.

      @Purwanti Allan M113 is the V8 engine Mercedes used in many of its cars back at that time. The K stands for Kompressor which means supercharger.

      The old one looks more premium for the era. All new MB designs look pretty uninspired. Still miles better than Audi and most G series BMWs though.

      Value of these cars is almost entirely based on options and mileage. Mine was around 80k miles for $20k.

      There’s a 2003 model year here in South Africa for R389 900 which is roughly £20 000 with 100 800 Km ~ 62 500 miles.
      For £30 K you’d get a 2006 model with 43 000 miles, decent resale value indeed

      @StreatBeatsAudio Subwoofers yeah modern cars do have more personality, we have actual good tools when making cars now so manufacturers can do better designs
      i love when people say that the future will be dead and emotionless when old cars look all similar to eachother, ugly, unadventurous and cheap design, compare that to the cars that have been released last year

      ​@Martin Svenssonit’s not making 625 to either. It would be much faster on the roll otherwise. 12.3 1/4 with half decent launch, it’s more like 550 hp max
      You need quite afew mods to get 625 and they didn’t even detail what’s been done.

      @AhEmGee Only thing you need is a different pulley, headers, ECU and better cooling.
      VRPs stage 4 for example is nearly 700hp.
      You have to remember that the engine will have to work with almost half the gears as the newer car. That will easily offset the actually delivered hp from the max hp figure to something lower for a much longer time than in the new car

I know taste is subjective but still. An Auburn 851 Speedster, Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, Mazda RX7 fd, Alfa Brera, those are just some random cars from different eras that are beautiful
