New 900hp Lotus: Faster than BMW & Porsche!

has been around for 75 years and is extensively known for releasing small petrol-powered sports like the Elise. Nevertheless, in more recent times it's turned its attention to electrical vehicles, consisting of the Emira & Evija sports and the Eletre SUV.

All three cars have actually been released to critical recognition, and is now turning its attention to an all-electric saloon. Nevertheless, this is no regular saloon – it's likely to produce more power and be less expensive than market-leading saloons such as the AMG E63 S!

But how do we know this? Well for starters, it's been validated that Lotus is dealing with a saloon. And it's likewise been confirmed that it will share the same platform as used in the Eletre SUV. However, we likewise understand that an Eletre R is due in the future, which is set to come with double electrical motors to produce an extraordinary 918hp – making it among the fastest electric SUVs on the planet!

What's more, we likewise know that the Eletre starts from under ₤ 90,000, with the Eletre R costing around ₤ 120,000. So given that a saloon is most likely to be cheaper to develop than an SUV, it's reasonable to presume that a saloon developed on the same platform might come in slightly more affordable, which would make it more effective and quicker than the ₤ 140,000+ !

So would you select a over a BMW or Porsche? Let us understand in the remarks!

Congrats CarWow team! Great info, but here’s my two cents. Lotus would sell twice as many cars if they made them hybrid, so it could meet the demands of a broader set of consumers. Sadly though, development of hybrids are more expensive than either ICE or all-electric on their own because it has to incorporate a little of both technologies. Companies like Toyota/Lexus and Mercedes can do it because of their deeper pockets and incentives on the back-end to make the investment. Lotus makes amazing cars, but for decades has always been a disaster in the accounting department. Even with Geely funding them, I doubt they have the financial know-how necessary to reach a broader audience than their core British market. Brilliant engineers, building amazing cars that simply don’t make enough money. From my Canadian perspective living in a vast sparsely populated region with harsh weather conditions, all I see from Lotus is world-class engineering that’s unable to reach enough of the world to allow them to survive against more formidable competition with the resources able to reach a broader set of consumers. Can’t wait to get my next AMG … probably a hybrid.

Feels kinda wrong for Lotus to suddenly become all electric and large and heavy, it goes completely against the reason why Lotus exists. I get it, the money has to come from somewhere but still…

It was the same story with Porsche. It was an outrage that they did the Cayenne, but if it wasn’t for that car, Porsche wouldn’t have made the money to continue developing the stunning 911s. Hopefully a mainstream Lotus model will be the same cash cow for lotus to be able to develop true-to form lightweight sports cars in the future.

@Dark Matter They said Emira is their last gas powered vehicle tho. They may have the lightest electric sports car, but the fundamentals of Lotus won’t be there as it will always be noticeably heavier. Also it won’t be a raw driving experience anymore. Btw i have nothing against EVs, I’m just sad, that brands like Lotus are kinda losing its soul when they are building electric SUVs.

@UtopiaYA Do you understand that batteries cause more harm than good. Just because you take the damage outside of the city, doesn’t mean that they don’t damage the environment. All that lithium being mined and processed and all the batteries that are disposed.

You want healthy? Decentralize the population and use alternative fuels for cars, right now they are making a new type of synthetic fuel from water and the CO2 in the air that has next to no pollution and is already in production, but on a very limited scale so it’s expensive for now.

Also while making the fuel they clean the oceans slightly and clean the air from CO2.

Yes, hence the reason Lotus was sold to Geely in 2017. Lotus recipe wasnt working for them, where everyone is turning to hybrid and electric SUVs making small and nimble sport cars obviously isnt gonna make your company bloom. Geely has invested a ton of money and technology shared with their own brand’s lineup and Lotus is about to jump heavily in next 5-10 years. Chinese did the same with MG and Volvo(Polestar). Chinese market is very different due to their emmision laws so most of the car engines are being downsized to 4 cylinders with a hybrid engine or going fully electric. Asia and China in particular is their main market focus so their cars are suited for that, rest of the sales will still happen all across world, even if the formula for Lotus is changed.

And it absolutly aligns with the philosophy of the company’s founder: small, light-weight car, not too much power, a light and raw driving experience hence not too much comfort.

@Eggyman fr lol everyone “loves their cars” but how many of them would even consider getting it over something like a Porsche. Its a pure driver’s wet dream that nobody buys. Im glad Geely bought them because at least they have a future, whether or not it be electric.

Call me a dinosaur but a huge part of a car’s appeal to me is the noise it makes. To date, the McMurtry is the only non-ICE car I’ve been truly excited about.

With Lotus’ new strategy, save the Emira, it goes against what I always thought the company stood for in designing lightweight, nimble cars as reducing weight was deemed the single best way to improve a car’s performance. Now all the engineering looks like it is made to deal with the added weight of the batteries and to satisfy the marketing team to promote 2,000bhp figures.

I’m extremely excited about a Porsche Taycan GT(3?) model. I guess this will be less powerful than the Lucid and also the Model S Plaid, but it’ll outperform both by far.
Porsche always deliver. The 911 Turbo S was an absolutely beast at that time and I guess the new Taycan will be the same in the BEV World like the Turbo S in the ICE non hybrid world…

Yeah it might beat the Tesla but not entirely sure about the lucid, if you’re talking about straight line speed then the lucid would walk them both but cornering might be a different story

    3. Florian J Avatar
      Florian J

@Makko727 yes, straight line speed the Lucid is safe superior. But this is not what I would expect from a sportscar. I guess the new Taycan will set a new Nürburgring Nordschleife track record and this is what counts most. A car like these have to handle more than just a small 0-60 time in my opinion.

    4. Makko727 Avatar
      Makko727

@Florian J yeah no I agree, but it’ll be exciting to see as both the Porsche and lucid are both made on the track (I’m not sure I would call them sports cars more like super sedans or something but that is just me) but I’m excited to see how quick those two will be on the track
