My Porsche is 3 years old – Should I extend the warranty ? | 4K

My 718 Boxster GTS turned 3 years of ages this week. That means she required to put out through her , the UKs yearly security examination. I need to make a few small modifications to the number plates. Should I keep these modifications? Now my 3 year Service warranty is over should I extend it?

Extending the warranty is a no-brainer. Never own a modern Porsche outside warranty. But isn’t this quite new? In Norway, we get 5 yrs of warranty. I bought a 2018 Cayenne last year with only 6 months of its remaining factory warranty, and got 3 yr PAW included in the purchase. It has saved me for 10000£’s worth of repairs and parts already.

I’ve loved watching your videos over the last 7 months. My major motoring moment happens in 13 days when I collect my brand new Ford Puma ST Line Vignale 😊

Fair play for not modding it, leave it as Porsche intended! (then trade it in next year for the Spyder) 😀

I’m VERY happy to hear that you simply ENJOY your Porsche! It’s refreshing to see that you’re not obsessing over this modification or that tune. Just letting go and relishing the time you, the missus, and the pups spend in this fine automobile is the thing to do…and you’re doing it. Not knowing which end of a spanner is which, I would take out an extended warranty on a Porsche. You know what, though? You and I both read about manufacturers NOT creating enough spare parts and quickly retiring “outdated” inventories of spares. I wonder if extended warranties in the case of rare cars like yours are actually a good idea in this case… My final car, a 2001 Prius, had an extended warranty (all those hybrid gubbins looked a nightmare) for the 4 years I owned it. No problems ensued…until that texting driver took out my car as it sat at a stop light. That’s NOT covered by an extended warranty, 😅🤣😂. Keeping doing what you do: enjoying all your drives.

A year! That went quick! Such a cool car that is. I’ve been lucky enough to do my work experience at the most amazing place on Bicester heritage this week and got to work with and film some pretty cool cars myself including a DB4 so I kind of got to live like you for a week in a way so very lucky!

I never doubted she wouldn’t fly through her MOT 👌🏻
If I’m honest I like the shape of the other plate, but I don’t like it when people space their plates, it’s as though they couldn’t afford the plate that says what they want so they manipulate the plate.
With regards to the Pilot 4S tyres I’m totally with you. I recently completed 1600 miles on a Nurburgring trip with my GR Yaris on 4S’s as opposed to my Cup 2 track alloys as I thought they’d take the miles better. The 4S’s were incredible with the pressures managed and after multiple laps held incredibly well. Plus I was still able to enjoy the GR on the twisties around Adenau.

I always extend it. Adds value when resale. Also, if you extend it it’s cheaper. Once warrenty expires, you need to pay for a check to get warrenty on.

For the TPMS: Try setting the wrong size tire – do the calibration. Go back and set the proper size tire – calibrate. Will probably sort it.

Over inflation can send them loopy too.

When you first inflate a new tyre unless you use a nitrogen inflator there will be a mix that includes oxygen, a gas that seems to leak from new tyres faster than other gases. I have found that it can take several thousand miles and several tyre pressure top ups to get to the final and stable readings. Add on the mileage for the new tyre to properly settle into the rims, and take up its permanent shape.
Manufacturers recommend running in a new tyres for some distance before using them at speed, to prevent overheating and damage to the structure.

I almost always buy the manufacturer’s extended warranties, especially if I’m not familiar with that particular model or manufacturer. My current BMW has a 4-year factory warranty. I bought the extended warranty so I’m covered for pretty much everything for 7 years. (basically 3 extra years) It’s a gamble and I accept that.

If nothing goes wrong, BMW wins. However, I mainly want the peace of mind. I now have a new BMW and I don’t really need to worry about anything for the next 7 years and 100,000 miles. That’s a mighty long time not to have to worry about having to pay hundreds or even thousands of Dollars on a potential repair.

Extended warranty is basically insurance. You buy it to protect yourself for repairs that you don’t want to pay.(or can’t afford to pay) Life is too short. I don’t mind letting BMW make some money off me, while offering me stress-free driving for 7 years. I didn’t buy the extended warranty and expect to “win” money off BMW. 🙂 (for that, I’ll just buy some lottery tickets or visit my favorite casinos) 🙂

Great update Pete. Very surprised by your approach on extended warranty (each to their own) I own an M5 Comp had it 3.5 years now , paying £94 per month for BMW extended warranty, my view is very much risk mitigation, ergo rather pay a grand or so over the next 12 months than have to shell out 1000’s for a new engine. Good luck

    1. Worzel Gummidge Avatar

The fear is what they use to sell you the extended warranty. If you put aside that £94 in a savings account, that’s over a thousand Pounds saved every year. And that money is still yours if there are no major repairs. If there are any repairs, you have the money set aside for it.

Selling the extended warranty is done by what’s called ‘back up the hearse and let them smell the flowers’.
I’m with you on this one – I took the car to Paragon who checked it over, said they can’t find anything on it that looks like it may fail. I then decided not to renew the warranty.
However I’m not with you on the tuning front – I’ve just taken my GT4 to GAD Tuning in Essex – they have produced miracles for me.

@Worzel Gummidge its a good point you make but major repairs on my car would go well beyond a grand

Nice update. I’ve never had a car that was in warranty so never had to worry about that. I kind of liked the old plate as it fitted the recess nicely, but didn’t like that it covered the rear towing point

Regarding extended warranties, I grew up at a time when Dixons made more profit on their extended warranties than they did on the product!!!
However, some good points are made below regarding future value with one as opposed to without. It all depends on what your intentions are, and only you know which way that might lean.
Don’t worry about lack of included driving on the vid, it’s actually quite interesting to hear you talk – it’s obvious you’ve carried it over to YT from your previous career.👍

Great update Pete personally I think the number plates are good as they are the green is my favorite color but I agree very expensive hard to justify.
As to warranty I never no what to do normally I extended for a year then change my car but now listening to your thoughts think I will take a chance it’s a lot of money in there pockets has a car gets older it’s unaffordable any way you might as well put that money aside for any big bills.

Great update. So interesting to hear your comments on the warranty. I have just, this week, extended my 2 year cover, for another 2 years on my Porsche.
My car also had an MOT, with everything looking good, but I just felt ‘better safe’ etc.
We shall see if good value or not.
Btw, much prefer the ‘standard’ plates, they just look right!

Personally adding the exhaust would be as far as I would. It’s such a beautiful car stock, why would you would you go any further. I suppose also you have to be careful about the finance in case any modifications affect the guaranteed value and insurance etc.

I drove the wheels off of my 911 992 C2S and sold it a month shy of 3 years. Was a difficult choice but year 4 service, extended warranty and other maintenance items would have been the best part of £5k. I enjoyed it and will get another one when I get bored of my S3, which is a great little car.

Loving the content – keep it going and enjoy the bloody car man! Not point saving it for the next owner.

Very interesting. I’m currently in the same quandary with my 69 plate TTRS, bought 2nd hand from Audi so currently enjoying the peace of mind with the warranty, however struggling with future plans of tuning for more performance and a bit more noise or continuing the warranty and potentially protecting its saleability down the line. TTRS’s reasonably rare so a lovely 2 owner well cared for and standard car is surely going to help its residuals? Lovely GTS Ped, Porsche probably the way I’ll go if I do ever sell the TTRS 👍🏻

Think you’re spot on with regard to it being near perfect as is … I’d consider one upgrade, a DSC Sport suspension controller. Its a trivial plug and play upgrade that you can do yourself in minutes but potentially gives a benefit to both day-to-day comfort ride and enhances the sport setup, improving balance and weight shifts during more spirited driving. Easy to fit, easy to remove for sale and/or warranty compliance, hence you can make most of the cost back in the case of moving on as well, whilst having no permanent effect on the rest of the car. Its a win, win TBH. Well worth the investment …

Totally agree with you about extended warranties. About 35 years ago I was talked into buying an extended warranty for a small electrical appliance. I realised when I got home it was a waste of money so ever since I have refused every extended warranty offer and instead starting putting aside the money saved for when something broke. I now have a very healthy “slush fund” to cover any eventuality particularly as this pays for repairs AFTER the extended warranty would have expired.
