Is the Top Gear Hilux still the ULTIMATE 4×4?

Our merch store is now LIVE:

It's time for an off-road head-to-head with two unbelievable Toyotas!

We have actually got our hands on the Arctic Trucks Toyota Hilux AT37, and it's going up against an incredibly uncommon, one-of-one Hilux … It's the Top Equipment Polar Unique Hilux – the very same one that the initial Top Gear team drove to the North Pole!

The two are going head-to-head over a series of obstacles on an off-road course to see which of the two is the very best off-road! But how will they compare? Let's take a more detailed take a look at the statistics.

The AT37 is based on the current-generation Hilux, so it features a 2.8-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine that produces 204hp and 500Nm. Power is sent to all 4 wheels by means of a 6-speed auto, and it weighs 2,200 kg. It features a number of modifications, consisting of 37" all-terrain tires, updated front & rear differentials, along with an adjustable efficiency suspension system. All in, the vehicle and the upgrades cost ₤ 78,000.

Then we pertain to the Top Equipment special edition Hilux. It's based upon the 2006 generation and is powered by a 3-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel motor that produces 171hp and 360Nm. It has 4WD, ultra-low gearing, and 38" snow tires. It likewise comes with pneumatic locking differentials and a number of extra unique mods!

The question is, will the more recent Hilux move itself to success? Or could the older Hilux nab the win? You'll need to stick to Mat, Sam & Colin to learn!

    Now being someone who is an icelander and has been around these sorts of vehicles a lot since I was a kid I feel the need to say something. The older Top Gear Hilux is basically designed for snow wheeling. The difference between the AT37 Hilux and the Top Gear Hilux regarding advantages with rock crawling and fast driving through rocky terrain are pretty much negligible. But put it on top of a glacier and the Top Gear Hilux will win hands down. The 38″ tire isnt just an inch taller but it is also about two inches wider at least and will spread out a lot more once deflated to distribute its weight. Add to that the rim size, the AT37 mod is running on 17″ rims while the Polar Hilux is running on 15″ rims. That means a lot more rubber to play with for snow wheeling.

    Regarding rock crawling and general overlanding during summer and in snow free areas, the AT37 will have a slight advantage. More power, lighter tires and more tech, that gives it a bit more pep in its stride. Put both vehicles in deep snow where you have to float on top of the snow to get anywhere then the Top Gear Hilux will trounce the AT37 mod every single time.

    One other thing also…the Polar Hilux on its 38″tires with those mods that are in the vehicle are pretty basic and even considered the bare minimum for icelandic winter driving in the highlands. Maybe aside from the toilet seat and the gun rack. Currently planning a 44″ tire mod for my Rubicon and will be done through Arctic Truck here in Iceland. 🙂

      @MrCreamPye

      True! Although that’s kinda obvious to many of us off-roaders. This was more about just having a fun, close-run challenge between ‘old’ and ‘new’. Even on this terrain, deflation would’ve helped massively (and may well have resulted in a draw, if not a win for the AT38).
