Germany v Japan: Who builds the best off-roader?

Our merch shop is now LIVE:

It's time for a Germany vs Japan off-road showdown!

We've teamed up with the group from Arctic Trucks as soon as again to hit up an off-road course to see which pick-up will come out on top – the VW Amarok, or the Toyota Hilux!

Let's take a closer look at the 2 contenders …

The AT37 is based upon the current-generation Hilux, so it features a 2.8-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel motor that produces 204hp and 500Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels by means of a 6-speed automobile, and it weighs 2,200 kg. The chassis and bodywork have actually been significantly re-engineered to accept 37" all-terrain tires, updated front & rear differentials, along with an adjustable efficiency suspension system. All in, the truck and the upgrades cost ₤ 78,000.

As for the Amarok, it's powered by a 3-litre V6 diesel and that produces 240hp. It likewise comes with a significantly re-engineered chassis and body, similar to the Hilux, and gets similar 37" all-terrain tyres and an updated suspension system. However, while the Amarok may have a low-range mode, it doesn't have rear locking differentials, while the Hilux does!

Arctic Truck's Hilux has currently taken down the Protector in a previous video, but does it have what it requires to reduce the Amarok? You'll require to stick with Mat and Sam to see on your own!

      Yeah they do. Dmax took over the hilux in 2012 as the most rugged and reliable. Isuzu 4jj and 4jk beat any Toyota engine period.

      For 35k + 20k i’ll have a Renault Duster Oroch 4×4 modified with 2 diff-locks and raised just like these 2 and drive / follow them
      on any path they did on this track and still left in my pockets with 30k for gas and a home.. 80k for 1 truck is insanely ridiculous !

      your renault duster lasts a few dirt trails then needs taken away on a recivery truck after a Hilux or Dmax has towed it to safe ground. I think you know that too mate

There are only two real pickups now, Hilux and Dmax even RZ4 engined Dmax is lasting longer than Rangers with V6s and even seen they are outlasting coyote engines in Thailand and Australia. Thats embarrassing for everyone that when Isuzu can put out a 1.9diesel that tonks even the Coyote engined Fords that we dont even get in the UK. The funniest bit is its outlasting them by 2 and 3times hahaha. Ridiculous

    The best truck isn’t the one that is the fastest. It’s the one that can do the course for the least amount of cash including list price, maintenance price and repair costs. Who cares about a few seconds if you can save yourself over £60k not buying one of these. £60k!!!!!! You can still have a good truck plus £60k!!!!!! Don’t fall for clever marketing bs.

    On another note. I live in a hilly area and last year we had a lot of snow. I have a 2022 Suzuki Vitara allgrip and a 2010 Nissan Micra 1.2 petrol. I took the Micra to work because its so light it just floats through the snow and bombs up the hills irregardless of the icy conditions. I passed an A4 Allroad and a range rover sport up the hill in that little Micra 😂I also don’t have to worry about any cosmetic damage if I get it wrong because its an old car worth around £2000 tops. I’m reluctant to take the Suzuki out when the going gets rough because its only 3 years old. Which begs the question, what is the point in having the Vitara if I’m too worried about damaging it?

    To sum up my point. My <£2000 Nissan Micra 1.2 FWD with 80bhp tackles the steep hills and rough terrain where I live. Sun, rain or snow. It gets through it all. Its also really fun around the corners. I never thought I'd like a Micra but here I am praising it 😂

      @john4226

      I wouldn’t worry about the 3 year old Sadziki Viagra. It shouldn’t be worth much more than your Micra, should it?

    1. @EmjayDTube Avatar
      @EmjayDTube

      Reliability is subjective with modern cars. If you’re talking about reliability I would rather get a Hilux from the 90s to the early 2000s

    2. @AndikaP99 Avatar
      @AndikaP99

      That V6 diesel is reliable, mate. Unfortunately, Hilux’s 48V mild hybrid is not. It’s ironic, isn’t it?

      @Thatguythere3838

      Actually the 2.8 isnt bulletproof, if it was then toyota wouldn’t still produce the less powerful 4.2 litre inline 6 engine (1HZ)

    I propose this solution: when you get a car with diff lock, and a car without, make it a rule that the car with diff lock auto wins.
    Knowing this, disable the diff lock on the car that has it, and run the test. If it wins great, if not, we all know it wins by default because of diff lock.

    If both cars are without a diff lock, or both cars have one, run the test as normal.

      @lemcakes32422

      @ciiccci some people just buy cars to park up

    5. @ciiccci Avatar
      @ciiccci

      Yeah . You can park even when diff lock engaged. And u can disengage it anytime u want and use like normal , those people don’t need 4×4 too .what’s the point .
      One company decided you willnt need diff lock no matter who u are and one decided you will need it . They engineered around it . And other maybe with LSD ,idk .@lemcakes32422
