Dodge Viper v Mustang GT v Shelby Cobra: DRAG RACE

It's time for an all-American face-off!

We've got our hands on a Dodge Viper GTS, a Shelby Cobra reproduction and a Ford Mustang, and they're about to go head-to-head over the quarter mile to see which triumphes!

However how do the three compare? Well starting with the Mustang, it's powered by a 5-litre V8 that can produce 460hp and 527Nm. This power is sent to the rear wheels just via a 6-speed manual transmission, and the suggestions the scales at 1,808 kg. When brand-new in 2019, the Mustang would have cost around ₤ 55,000.

Next up we have the Dodge Viper. It comes equipped with an 8-litre naturally-aspirated V10 that creates 456hp and 664Nm. As with the Mustang, the power is sent out to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual, and it weighs in at simply 1,595 kg. As brand-new, the Viper expense around ₤ 69,000.

Then finally we pertain to the Cobra replica. It's powered by a 5-litre Ford Coyote V8 that can put down 460hp and 569Nm. Similar to the other vehicles, it's power is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed handbook, and it's likewise scarily light, tipping the scales at just 835kg! If you want to get one of these, it'll cost you a cool ₤ 195,000!

So will the lightweight power the Cobra to victory? There's just one method to learn … LET'S RACE!

      The Viper is legendary. This SRII GTS Viper that came out in 1996 could dip into the 11’s with the right tires and driver on a good 1/4 track.
      Back in 1996 the Viper GTS did low 12’s @ 117mph in various magazine testing.

      @@electrikoptikThe trap speed is what seems so insane, I think some mags even got like 119/120 mph trap speed for the old GTS. That’s faster than most fast cars today lol. And manual too, with a DCT or something they’d be even faster.

      Sorry, not buying it. The viper needed 700hp minimum (it likely had 750hp) to keep up with a car weighing 1000kg and 460hp. The way the viper moved on the Mustang, it also backs it up. The Mustang should have been slower than the Viper being 213kg heavier, but not drastically slower.

      @@myownsite yes but becuase of the power to wight on that monster kind of cancels that thing out that thing will easilly hit 180 like that that thing is a monster 500 bhp for a car wieghing only one ton is stupidly fast no wonder the viper couldent beat it

      They all sound fabulous. The only knock on the sound of the Viper was when cruising in 6th (overdrive gear). I remember getting passed on the highway by one back in 2004 and looping along at 1200rpm it sounded trash. Too lazy to google to confirm, but pretty sure it has an uneven firing order making it sound off at low rpm.

      @@totov7673 My Stage 3 2002 Bugeye WRX Wagon with 330WHP with a 5 speed manual could do 12.9. And that car was SEVERELY limited by the gearing, would fall out of boost shifting to second and 3rd

      ​@@totov7673AWD+Auto is no comparison to RWD+Manual. The whole point made is these cars can shave off more time when launched properly. Vipers had 118mph 1/4 trap speeds in the 1990s.
