We've got our hands on an 4R, and it's taking on a M4 Competitors!

The concern is, do you think this little pocket rocket can take down a fully-fledged M car? Let's take a closer look.

The Atom 4R is powered by a 2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder that provides 406hp and 500Nm. This power is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed sequential gearbox, and it weighs in at only 665kg! As new, it'll cost you around ₤ 80,000.

Up next is the BMW. Under the M4's bonnet is a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six with 530hp and 650Nm. Power is sent to all 4 wheels through an 8-speed automated gearbox, and it pointers the scales at 1,775 kg. As new, it costs around ₤ 91,000.

So the BMW is up on power, but the is SO much lighter! Will the weight show decisive? There's just one way to discover … LET'S RACE!

    Interesting how the 8-speed auto in the M4 still holds its own despite the Atom’s 6-speed sequential and 665 kg chassis. Goes to show tuning and launch control calibration are underrated…

      Exactly! People always underestimate how much software and drivetrain calibration can compensate for weight. BMW’s engineers really know how to squeeze every millisecond out of a launch!

      That’s why motorcycles can accelerate so quickly they are very light and the power/weight ratio is so much larger compared to say cars.
      But a car that can accelerate as fast as a motorcycle and can reach incredible top speeds is much more impressive in my eyes .

    I had the chance to drive an Atom on a race track a few years back, and it was absolutely incredible (and that was the base model). The same day I drove an Aventador and a 458 Italia, and the Atom was just so much more fun. I have no idea how to drive fast cars on a track, but it sure made me smile!

      They really need to make a “low power” version of the Atom for normal people who just want some fun. Keep the K20 in it, but remove the supercharger/turbo. It’ll still be plenty fast, but it won’t kill you.

    I cant beleive how close that actually is. 400+bhp & 655kg V 530bhp & 1780kg. It shouldnt be that close.

    Good yardstick for the M4 there. Obviously packing 550bhp+ but still good by the heavy coupe.

      As an atom owner, I also want to know what they did with TC. Since the atom cuts some power in all TC modes except TC off. And to drive a 4R in TC off is super sketchy.

      I was driven around a proper racetrack by a professional race car driver in a Campagna Motors T-Rex a few years ago and never once did he use his brakes around corners….only downshifting. I also drove around the same track in a Lambo Huracan Performante and a Nissan GTR Nismo with a track pro in the passenger seat. They were all so fast that that they make your eyes water.

    At 6:52 it sounded like two small jets crossing the finish line. Once the Atom tires hooks up on the tarmac it’s game over. Considering the weight difference, the braking power on the BMW is impressive.
