Are new SUVs pointless?

Change your vehicle with Carwow:

It's time for a Toyota off-road showdown!

We have actually got Mat in a timeless Land Cruiser from 2002, and he's taking on the all-new Land Cruiser through a series of challenges at an off-road course!

The question is, will it be a walkover for the more recent, far more costly cars and truck?! Let's take a closer look …

Starting with the old Land Cruiser, it's powered by a 4.7-litre V8 that produces 235hp and 434Nm. It's geared up with a 4-speed auto transmission, and it has a variety of features to help it off-road, including low-range mode, a main locking diff, and adjustable height suspension.

As for the colony Cruiser, it has a 2.-litre 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine, which produces 205hp and 500Nm. It includes a high & low variety model, a central locking diff, in addition to an electric rear differential.

The new Land Cruiser includes a tremendous ₤ 80,000 price tag, whereas we picked up the old Cruiser for just ₤ 2,000. So will the new automobile show its worth? You'll require to stick with Mat and Sam to see on your own!

More accurate comparison would have been against an older Land Cruiser Prado with 4 cylinders, not this V8 version. It’s like comparing an older Range Rover with a new Velar.

The V8 cruiser is far superior to the new prado. The douchnuckle in this video knows feck all about cars. If he did hed realise the hill descent control and all the other electronic buggery is just fancy manipulation of the ABS module. But agree you can really compare a v8 petrol legend with a rattly 4 cylinder bucket of bolts.

Can’t compare a modern engine like that. A modern 4 cylinder is significantly more powerful than a 20 year old v8.

But then again it’s Toyota so it’s two or three generations behind everyone else and with half the power at best

    5. @marks_02 Avatar

Both very similar size (same wheelbase), standard spec, tyres similar size, power and torque isn’t even that different really. One has slightly more power, the other slightly more torque… They’ll both take similar loads and tow similar weights… The “Prado” has better diff lock options. The old one probably slightly better ground clearance (although it wasn’t evident here), so not much real world difference.

I don’t get what difference does the name makes?

Anyone whos doing serious offroading wouldnt keep any of their Diff regardless of how fast it is. Serious offroaders swap that junk out for Air lockers or Eaton E-locker. Eaton E-locker is one touch of a button and people have this on Dmax and Hilux on some of the fleet fitments out of the factory here in Scotland. Even a detroit truetrac embarrasses everything in this vid and you can get them here for £670. Not exactly a game changer if it can be easily replaced by an even better and stronger alternative for under £700 including £30 for your diff oil. My dad had the early 4.0 litre diesel landcruiser with an auto gearbox with the way over damped steering. Then bought the 4.2 turbo diesel with the manual gearbox. What a great piece of kit it was. I loved listening to that 4.2 straight six ticking over, it sounded such a brute. I ended up driving it both solo and towing a caravan for 10’s of thousands of miles. Nothing was ever an issue for it…just brilliant. We ended up trading it in for an Audi A6 avant…just not the same pleasure towing anymore. The Landcruiser had done us proud as second owners for most of its twenty one years existence. An awesome extremely well built highly reliable vehicle. Miss it loads. Shame the UK only gets the 4 cylinder engine in the latest vehicle.
