VW ID. Cross Review: third date energy… are we committing?

You know how dating works. First there's the first date– amazing, appealing, but you're still figuring things out. Then there's the second date, maybe a bit more relaxed, maybe you begin to see the real personality.

And by the third date … well, that's when things typically begin getting serious. That's precisely where we are with the Volkswagen ID. Cross.
Our very first date was when Volkswagen revealed the idea cars and truck. Our 2nd date was when Nicola got behind the wheel of the model. And now? This is the third date– our first appropriate drive (albeit of a camouflaged model).

So is the chemistry still there? Does it still look good in the daytime? And most notably … is this electric crossover relationship material?
In this video, Nicola Hume takes the brand-new ID. Delete on the roadway to learn what it's actually like to drive, how it compares to other electric SUVs, and whether this might be one of Volkswagen's essential EVs yet.

Because in some cases the third date informs you everything you need to understand.

    Efficiency has improved… Those battery sizes just 10 years ago gave you half that range!

      I wonder if its to do with people are just going “I want a 90kwh battery” but “I want X amount of range”.

      So they can reduce the size of the battery, bringing down the weight but increasing the efficiency.

      They must have some clever maths which can show a cross over point per car, when increasing the battery doesnt sufficiently increase the range and in the end becomes a penalty.

      I’ll be surprised if the car achieves anything close to those numbers, though. I would still expect 3.5m/kW so 100 miles range realistically (because you don’t drive it to 0%) in the small battery version.

      My understanding is that efficiency has come in three areas: 1. battery chemistry has improved so that it can charge and discharge better without negative consequences. Also nice that they have been reducing Cobalt, so less “conflict” chemicals. 2. The electronics that move the electrons around (from the battery to create movement and putting the electricity back either through regen or charging). 3. Motor efficiency. There have been some significant changes in the last 5 years that have made it to productions that make the motors not only more efficient in using electrons to create forward motion, but also have lower losses when coasting. Together those various changes have added up to significant steps forward.

      @andrelam9898For sure, but none of the new cars are achieving the level of efficiency that VW are claiming here. Plus the biggest factor will always be the aerodynamics and this car isn’t as slippery as say the original Ioniq.

      @LeeOadesMy 2021 ID.3 with 150kW gets 4-4.5 mi/kWh
      So I would guess a more modern car which is also lighter won’t have trouble keeping up with that (in same driving conditions of course)

    Did you close the driver’s door to see if it “sounds like a Golf”?

    I like the camo paint more than the normal choice of colours… is that weird? In terms of design and aesthetic, it’s good to see that Skoda is influencing VW !

    8:15 the informed consent 😂😂😂 but seriously, that dashboard template looking like my dad’s 1979 VW Santana (Quantum) just gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling! Such a simple element to implement, yet such a powerful statement of “VW wouldn’t be here without Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Golf.“ Well played VW (and Nicola, that’s the way to play on dates, you’re setting a great subliminal example without being patronising— applause)

    That 475L boot plus a small frunk is doing a lot of work for a compact footprint. Packaging like that often ends up being the real selling point for daily drivers.
