A well cared for, used i4 eDrive40 is at the top of my shortlist for a new to me car. If only I had a little more money to play with…

I4 40 is only available as rwd in UK. Active cruise can be added as a software upgrade via the app on any i4 that didn’t have it from the factory. Rides well without active dampers.

I bought a second hand i4 e40 MSport Pro exactly one year ago and haven’t had any regrets. It is quiet, comfortable, efficient (if driven sensibly!) and the range has been no issue at all…just need to change your mindset, plan ahead properly and you’ll find that your bladder demands a stop before the car does.

Yes, there is a premium cost to buying and owning a BMW, but the driving experience is premium too. In summary, it has been faultless so far, so I’d agree with Nicki’s views 👍🏻

Timely video. Yesterday I just signed for the purchase of a 3 year old ex lease i4 eDrive40 M Sport Pro. I bought it for basically all of the reasons Nikki has outlined in the video. It’s a lovely car and great to drive. Now our household will be ICE free. Let’s hope the car is a good one!

1500 mile trip London to Outer Hebrides. 4.1 m/kWh. Just over 10p mile with Ionity subscription and plug and pay. V happy and that’s the 35 model.

      Why is that good?
You probably get only 250 miles out of a charge and so have to stop five times and sit around for an hour each time to charge it up. So you need to factor in the time and messing.
My Mercedes E Class 220d has a range of over 800 miles and on a run returns 58mpg. It is ulez compliant and low road tax.
That then costs me 11.7p per mile and I would only be forced to have one stop for 5 minutes to top up on the way.
      Am I missing something?

@grolfe3210 waiting for ferries , having a coffee, charging at hotels. or wouldn’t you do any of that? PS Friends E300d estate does 51 mpg London to Glasgow.

I have an i4 eDrive 40 that I bought new 3 years and 75,000 km ago. One of the first 2024 model year ones, with iDrive 8.5. Extremely happy with it, not for sale any time soon I’m afraid…

I’m on my second, I had a 2023 edrive 40 and upgraded in 2025 to an M50. Classy, great to drive, and a proper hatchback for stuff. The only downside is the first year depreciation is steep, but that’s a win for used buyers. (Ps mine looks great in voodoo blue).

Having driven an EV6, Polestar 2, Model 3, Model Y and an i4 we have just bought a late 2023 i4 40 with 16k miles on the clock. It was a very close decision to go for the i4 over the model 3 , but more conventional controls , a proper dash , HUD and of course indicator stalks swung it in favour of the i4 . I would also add of all the cars we drove the i4 was the most like a conventional car with the model 3 the runner up. I accept that the model 3 has a longer range and is more efficient but for a lot of our journeys we will be within the range of the i4, time will tell whether we made the right decision.

I ordered my BMW i4 in June 2021, being delivered in April 2022. I still have it and it has always been a pleasure to drive. You mention “the ultimate driving machine” in the video and I couldn’t agree more. It’s pure driving pleasure and every time I am about to drive it, I look forward to it. And the performance when it comes to charging speed and range has been class-leading until now, hence I haven’t been that eager to change it for another car. I can recommend a used i4 any day.

I don’t understand all of the people acting like the Tesla is the perfect EV and the only one worth buying. I passed them over for the Ioniq 5. The Teslas as just way to minimalistic for me and I grew up in a mid century modern household. Having to access the touch screen to open the glove box, adjust the air con vents or deleting the turn signal stalk. Technology for the sake of the technology.

Happy owner of a 2023 e40 msport. The car is just about to tick over 78,000 miles and its average efficiency since factory is 3.9 mi/kWh with about 80% highway miles in 4-season New England weather. Most trips in summer end with 4.1 – 4.4 mi/kWh so under ideal conditions the real world range is about 300 miles. The car has had no mechanical or electronic issues and only one scheduled maintenance visit so far with the second one coming up in October. After test driving all the competition including the T*sl* Model Y we chose the i4 based on driving dynamics and build quality and we have had no regrets.
