Renault 8 Gordini: The Coolest EV You Can’t Buy

Ginny Buckley gets up close with one of the stars of the Paris motor show– the spectacular new Renault 8 Gordini Idea.

It may not be heading for production, but this one-off electric principle reveals what happens when Renault takes among its most iconic performance automobiles and provides it a thoroughly modern-day makeover.

Motivated by the initial Renault 8 Gordini of the 1960s, this two-door, two-seat electric coupe combines 270bhp, rear-wheel drive and some seriously creative style information.

From the six-headlight front end and sculpted wheelarches to the concealed '8' information, laser-etched rear lights and those beautiful 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, Ginny explores how Renault has actually reimagined a traditional without merely copying it.

Inside, things get even more intriguing. There are corduroy pail seats, brushed aluminium, circular digital screens and a splendidly pared-back dashboard– a refreshing modification from the giant screens and visual clutter found in so many contemporary EVs.

Ginny also gets the story behind the concept from its designers, consisting of which aspects might potentially make it into future Renault production automobiles.

And after that there's the big concern: could Gordini make a comeback?
The Renault 8 Gordini Concept is part of Renault's growing fascination with reinterpreting its greatest hits for the electrical era, following the Renault 17 restomod.

    First the R17, now this.. Renault is cooking with the oldschool design, they should bring back more beauty like this when going electric.

      They put the Turbo 3E into production last year for approx 1980 units. It’s based on the same platform I guess, so maybe it could into production, let’s see.

      Alpina is BMW. I think it would be better as a Gordini Renault than an Alpine, like the original, they’ve shown that retro brings success so far

    They’re missing a trick not putting these into production. The 17 would be the one for me though – a sleek 70s shape with modern perks, exactly what the Capri should’ve been.

      I dont think there is a huge market for coupe’s now. Even the M2 is a niche. A hatchback would be more logical.

      @duckie250 maybe not, but plenty of hatchbacks are essentially 2-seaters most of the time. Nobody I know would be comfortable in the back of my Mazda 3 (not least because the 2 front seats are normally occupied by 2 6ft 4 adults) so coupe design but with rear doors maybe?

    Probably the one thing the Chinese manufacturers cannot replicate, good aesthetic design based in this case on historical designs. Other manufacturers take note.

      You are right, the Chinese don’t build marketing concepts that have no chance of ever going to production. Other manufacturers have taken note and they generally agree it’s a waste of money.

    I’m not into sports cars at all, but this one has a certain “je ne sais quoi” that makes it intriguing and captivating. I find it a beautiful and elegant piece of design! 💙

    Renault has an MX-5 on it’s hands. That looks bloody fantastic. That interior is a sight for sore eyes, and the exterior makeover is the perfect balance between homage and modern design.

      Ehm … roof? I agree on the dashboard, 3 separate round LCD screens will cost a lot less than a large custom panel. Brilliant. The central console will the D R P buttons doesn’t work well in the R5 Alpine and neither does here. But the aircraft knobs … hell yeah 👍🏻

      Alas, whilst I kinda agree with your point, once Renault slap the batteries underneath (raising it by 6-8″, which will also impact the stance / proportions, etc) it’s not going to *handle* like an MX5… but it *could* perhaps be akin to an RX7 (another light(ish) weight, 2 door, hard-top Mazda sports car, that had a bit more power stock, which would help make up for weighing a bit more)

    It would be criminal if they didn’t make a production version of this. Renault are just smashing it currently – we love our Renault 5.
