Renault 5 Long-Term test: still the best one to buy?

#Renault 5 #Renault 5EV #ElectricCars

Complete review:

I have actually been coping with the Renault 5 EV for the past 381 days– through school runs, supermarket journeys, long freeway drives, winter season weather, charging stops, muddy canines and teenage guests– and now it's finally time to give it back.
The issue is … I actually don't wish to.
When this little green Renault 5 very first gotten here on my driveway back in April 2025, I believed I understood precisely what it was going to be: trendy, nostalgic and fun for a few weeks. What I didn't anticipate was just how attached I 'd end up being to it.
So in this long-lasting review I'm speaking about everything. The great, the bad, the truly fantastic and the a little frustrating bits Renault still requires to figure out.
What's the real-world variety in fact like in summer and winter season? Is it useful enough for everyday life? How does it handle long motorway journeys? What's charging like? And after a complete year together … would I really recommend buying one?
Spoiler alert: numerous of my good friends currently have after driving mine.
This isn't a launch evaluation or a fast very first drive. This is what the Renault 5 is REALLY like to deal with after a full year in the real world.
And yes … I'm truly heartbroken to see it go. Let us know your thoughts in the comments listed below …

    I had a 5 turbo in the mid 90s. Had a midlife crisis and bought a pop yellow iconic few weeks ago. It’s simple blooming marvellous. Well done Renault. You are to be thanked. Well done. Great vid by the way.

      That sounds like a brilliant upgrade, hope you’re enjoying every mile in it! And if this is what a midlife crisis looks like; I’m in!

      They need to make a proper EV 5 turbo. a fat battery and slightly bigger at 4.3-4.4m with 300hp+ options

      @AbuDhabiDude

      @DerpSenpaiThey’ve done that! The Renault 5 E-Tech Turbo is a thing. Extortionately expensive though. But pretty much exactly what you described.

    My first car back in the early 80’s was a R5. Love the retro look, but having sat in a R4 as well, thats the one I would go for. But still nothing beats my Kona Ultimate

    It’s funny what we don’t consider to be a family car nowadays when I remember being folded into the rear seats of a Peugeot 206cc in my mid teens. Anything with two rear seatbelts counted as a family car for us!

      @Electrifyingcom

      I agree with you. I used to be driven to France on holiday in the back of my parents old MGB GT. Squeeze the kids in and tell them not to moan 😂

      I remember my grandma and grandpa at the rear seat of a 3door Citroen AX for a 300 miles journey back in the early 90s. I was so happy with my new family car back then. I could have both my kids at their seats and almost all the gear they needed, strollers bags etc. I replaced it 7 years later with the ZX.

      I remember when we were travelling in our Fiat 126p without rear seatbelts from Poland to the Balkans for summer holidays. No AC, no crash absorption zone, no boot, everything inside or on the roof, ohh, the good old days.
      OK, sarcasm off, there is a difference between a family car and a car capable of travelling in four.

    4. @GregHarveyUK Avatar
      @GregHarveyUK

      Not having four doors is tough with little ones, I would say it’s not a family car but not because of size (we had a 4 door Panda when my kids were small), but because of the number of doors. Clipping baby seats in and out of two door cars is not fun. Of course back in the day I’m not sure baby seats were even a thing? Rear seatbelts certainly weren’t in the ’80s. 😂

    5. @michalklucz6907 Avatar
      @michalklucz6907

      @GregHarveyUK no seatbelts, no isofixes.. we have happy memories, but completely forgot about downsides. my ONLY problem with R5 is I am still able to sit behind myself (187cm tall) in my BMW i3. I cant do that trick in R5, and damn… I3 suicide doors are a godsend for kids in child seats

    We drive a Scenic E-Tech and had an R5 as a loan car for a service last month. Lovely little thing, really nice interior and very similar tech to the Scenic. Good fun to drive, but it is a small car in the back particularly.

    Neighbour opposite had a Micra today to try out as he has a Leaf and loved it. I had a look and it’s really nice. Renault (and Nissan) have done a great job on these cars.

    Thanks for a great and honest review. We just got a R5 in Techno trim on a 4 year lease for my wife daily commute to and from work. And we did get it in pop green, because it like the color on the shirts of her favorite football team 😊
    Also she says the same thing you do about the car makes her smile both when looking at it at when driving it.
    Add over here in Denmark we do get both heated seats and heated steering wheel with the Techno trim level 😊

      The English team that specced the car really messed up not offering heated seats. Hope you enjoy and smile with every mile! Ginny 😊💚

      @ElectrifyingcomI went for the yellow. Divisive I know, but I think all the colours look great. I went for the Iconic spec, just for the heated seats and the better speaker system which I love. I’ve never known a car which is so much fun and that people are genuinely interested in.

    I’ve had mine since December (Williams Clio colours). I went for Iconic Five trim for those heated seats and steering wheel mainly. I love it. Never fails to put a smile on my face. It makes me much happier than my previous BMW i4 did. Just makes me smile and brings joy in a way the BMW never quite managed. It’s not perfect, but I think my final bill was around £26,000 for a top spec one with extended warranty and service plan and a few optional bits for good measure. It’s hard to beat. Not a moment’s regret.

    Love your honest review, this car really will put a smile on your face everyday 🙂
    I have a petrol SUV as well but after I got my R5 I only drive my SUV for long journey.

    I bought a green renault 5 for my mam (my choice!!) and collected it on 3rd July 2025. She absolutely loved it and the attention she got in it, people stopping her to talk about it. Unfortunately she only had it a few months when she fell sick and passed away in january this year. I havent been able to sell the car so I’m driving it now, I also have another EV so I dont need the R5 but i absolutely love it and I’m keeping it. I might change my main car regularly over the next few years but I can see the R5 staying as the long term second household car.

    Excellent video ! Thanks ! Yes, this is a fantastic small EV ! I agree for the potential ‘problem’ when you quickly go from Reverse to Forward or vice versa. So now I’m cautious… and I bother my children when I tell them to be cautious 😁. Except that, I LOVE this car everyday 👍
