Polestar 4 Long-Term test: brilliant… but buggy?

Review:
After swapping her much-loved BYD for the striking brand-new Polestar 4, Nicola Hume has actually been coping with among the most talked-about electrical SUVs on sale. With its bold design, futuristic cabin and controversial choice to ditch the standard back window completely, the Polestar 4 guarantees an extremely various type of EV experience. But how does it hold up in reality?
In this long-lasting update, Nicola shares her honest decision after a number of months behind the wheel. While she's been impressed by the efficiency, convenience and standout styling, it hasn't all appeared sailing. She speaks about some early software application teething difficulties, how they impacted day-to-day use, and whether updates have improved things.
Nicola also explores how the camera-based rear view system works in daily driving, and whether moving from a BYD she absolutely loved has actually made the transition simpler or more difficult.
Has the Polestar 4 measured up to expectations, or have the niggles taken the shine off? View to find out.

You called out the biggest critiscism I have in the first minute. Seriously – the width, why?! Why is it as wide as a bloody RR Discovery. The disease is spreading as well. The Ioniq 3 is supposed to be Hyundai’s most compact option besides the Inster – it’s 1,968mm wide! It’s the first thing I look at now, people say small cars when they mean short cars, and to me honestly width is more important in terms of ease of use. EV platforms already make great use of the space, I guess they’re adding width to accommodate battery capacity but damn they really need to draw a line.

Fully with you on this – I have rejected some cars on this alone.

Our last purchase was a 2018 Outlander…. because it was (significantly) the narrowest thing it its class.

There’s literally no reason for a car to be this wide. For any car, for that matter. Ioniq 3 is such a shame too. It’s perfect but the width absolutely killed the whole appeal. The new Leaf is probably the only sensible sized EV on the market, if we’re not counting super minis

This is a real problem with the new polestars, and the main reason I can’t go near them. We’ve an EV9, and it’s width makes it an absolute pain in the arse trying to manoeuvre it around multi-storeys. Car parks that were designed around the Escort and Astras.

15:00 things like these is why it is important to still have some good old physical controls and indicators in cars, cars are not smarphones on wheels

I’ve never had the rear camera fog, done 20k miles in it even in frozen conditions, rear windows freeze and guaranteed you don’t wait for it to fully defrost before driving?

I think we are becoming to complacent in accepting cars with too many faults. They really shouldn’t launch them knowing there are issues with a promise of “over air” updates. Not that it would sort out the problem of a misty rear view camera.

why do car drivers stress about a rear window. van drivers have none , it’s not required ❤

It has it’s advantages. If someone rear-ends you, you can truthfully say…sorry officer I never saw them.

Mine (2026) is electron too, but with a Nappa white interior. I love it and can’t complain much though it’s been a lovely experience, hopefully it stays like that 😅🤞🏿

Great review. I’ve had my PS4 for over 1 year now. Love the car – so refreshingly different from legacy car makers. It did have s/w issues at the start but most have been resolved through regular over the air updates. Perhaps Nicola’s car needs the latest updates?

My only Gripe I had when I tested the car was that the rearview mirror is actually about 3 inches too close compared to a normal rearview mirror. I was wondering why I couldn’t focus properly on it… sat in my car and right away figured it out…

For the reset… did you put something on the PlayPause button, because if you hold it for 30 seconds it reboots the entertainment system. Learned that from sound issues on our Polestar 3 and they told us t reboot it like that.

I so nearly purchased one. Good lease. But it was just too big for my garage. Leased an EX30 Ultra Twin Performance instead. Keep up the fun vids

I install and repair garage doors. Fixing an electric roller door yesterday on a large double garage. Inside, a bright yellow Lotus Eletre. It is absolutely enormous, but very elegant.

@gordonmackenzie4512nice. I switched to roller doors when I purchased an Ioniq 5. For the P4, I’d have had to clean shelving from the back. In order to get round to be able to plug it in to charge. That might be the next step

It’s a beautiful car, the width gives it presence and grounding on the road. Gorgeous interior and the bugs are getting ironed out each patch. No car is perfect but the polestar 4 is the nicest EV on the road right now.

Had mine a year and really happy overall. Had a couple of the issues like losing the sound on maybe two occasions but not in a while. Heated steering wheel fine, there even two heat levels so not sure what the problem was there. I am disappointed they’ve not sorted the android phone as a key yet. I hate the 3d views that pop up when indicating just as I’m about to tick the screen – maybe I should be focused on the road though!
Speed of single motor seems way more than needed if you come from an ICE.
Really nice space to be in. Just breath in on the narrow roads! 😂😂

I’ve got one of these. I love the car but the bufs are driving me nuts. I’ve had it for a year and the annoyances grate more than ever, every time they happen. It’s pushing me to look for an alternative.

    Great Review!

To be fair regarding the mirror adjustment, it was because the passenger door was open and the warning about the door being open was up on the driver’s screen and you were clicking the pad meant to acknowledge that warning, but pressing the wrong button. Then you did click the right one, but that then kicked you out of the mirror adjustment and back to the volume/track adjustments.

The comment about the phone charger not being cooked so your car will overheat…

I’ve never had this happen once and I live in Australia where it’s been summer for the last couple of months (35-45c regularly).

As a Canadian, driving in winter weather means cameras are often dirty and need to be cleaned frequently…so now with this car i have no rear view mirror because of a dirty camera?
