NEW Toyota Aygo X review – HUGE makeover for brilliant small car!

The Toyota Aygo X had one significant issue: it was painfully sluggish. However for 2026, Toyota has actually given it a significant heart transplant. In this evaluation, we find out if the new 1.5-litre Hybrid engine lastly makes the Aygo X the best small automobile– or if the confined interior holds it back.

We evaluate the changed efficiency of the brand-new Aygo X Hybrid, which cuts the official 0-62mph time substantially compared to the old 1.0-litre model. We also put Toyota's claim of 74mpg to the test in the real world, check the boot to see if it can deal with the weekly store, and describe which trim level is the best buy.

The new hybrid engine makes it faster, but is the Aygo X too small for the money? 🤔

If you had around £20k to spend on a new small car, which would you buy?

    a) Dacia Sandero
    b) Renault Clio
    c) Toyota Aygo X

The Clio and arguably the Sandero are B segment with the Aygo being A segment so not really a like for like comparison

How easy is it to turn off the ADAS? That was really annoying in the older one. Please can you add this as a standard test you do for all reviews (or has What Car decided that it’s not ethical to do this?). The rest of the review was helpful. Thanks

There is a small icon on the top right of the info screen one touch and it shuts off the annoying beeps

@petersafwat8228thanks for that. The previous generation I test drove needed about 12 menu presses and scrolls everytime you started the engine!

It’s parked under trees so large drops of water are falling hence the noise – which would be heard on any car.

They should of kept the option to have a pure petrol for those wanting a cheaper car as making it a hybrid only has bumped the price up to what a Yaris is which is a bigger and better car

Probably cannot due to cost of producing a few and to meet fleet emissions.

tbf if you want a cheap car then better getting a second hand one

Not a bad car, but pricing is eccentric.

Second hand, a better buy vs new. Smashes the competition on reliability too.

This is 2026! A Kia Picanto runs from £16k to just over £20k with only a 1.0 non hybrid engine with automatic box. A Fiat Panda hybrid (with dubious Puretech engine) in top trim comes in at £22k. When you consider the Aygo X comes with a clever 1.5 full hybrid power train with good performance/efficiency and proven reliability, it doesn’t look that bad against competitors at £21k – especially with a ten year warranty….

@jdmguy44no wonder everyone is buying Chinese cars. These prices are ridiculous. Doesn’t even make sense.

@samlui3591″everyone is buying Chinese cars” really?! An MG3 hybrid costs £21k in trophy spec. Hardly cheap either. Buy one of those at your peril given the safety scandal that they’re embroiled in with seats that detach in a crash

If you practically never carry anyone in the back (me) the space in the rear isn’t important. Also, you can always move the front passenger seat forward a bit to get somebody behind. The hinged rear windows are also unnecessary and will probably never be used. I’ve never opened the back windows in any car I’ve owned. As for four doors, well, this ensures the front doors aren’t too long, making them easier to use in cramped car parks. The interior is good, everything is accessible and works well. Yes, hard plastic everywhere, but you never squeeze your dashboard and once driving you are looking out all the time, so who cares?
I confess to having test driven one of these and it was like a go-cart, real fun. I can’t say that about any other car I’ve driven in decades. Brilliant steering. It felt quick, nimble, secure, comfortable and relaxed. For one or two people it’s brilliant, and very easy driving at the speed limit as well as being economical.
If you carry more than two people regularly then this is not the best solution of course.
Horses for courses, but with all cars becoming so dreary, dull and uninvolving this is a real breath of fresh air.

I loved its distant cousin from years ago the Citroën C1 but I think you’d be mad not to wait for the new Clio which will probably be not too much more money at base or mid spec.

Should be getting the new excel in February. The difference between this and the Yaris excel is £2800 which is from my point of view about 5 to 6 years worth of fuel.

Small Toyotas are amazing. Love the styling of the Aygo and would buy one but am five years into a Yaris which is a little more refined and spacious so would buy the same again!
