NEW Renault Megane revealed: remember me?

Go on … admit it. You 'd ignored this one, hadn't you?
While the Renault 4, 5 and Twingo have been taking all the headings, there's another Renault silently still in the lineup– the Megane E-Tech. And now it's had a proper mid-life facelift with brand-new styling, more variety, much faster charging and some creative effectiveness upgrades.
In this very first look, we take a fresh walkaround of the updated Megane E-Tech to see whether Renault has done enough to bring its "forgotten EV" back into the conversation … or if it's been totally eclipsed by its retro-inspired siblings.
The updates are more than skin deep. There's a new front-end design, a modified interior finish, a brand-new 67kWh LFP battery utilizing cell-to-pack tech for enhanced rigidness and packaging, plus a bump in WLTP variety to 311 miles. Charging is quicker too, now up to 165kW DC, suggesting 15– 80% in around 24 minutes. On paper, a minimum of, this is a seriously enhanced package.
But the EV market hasn't stood still. The Megane now finds itself up against some very strong competitors consisting of the Kia EV3, Volkswagen ID.3, Cupra Born and MG4– all defending the exact same family hatchback buyers.
So the concern is easy: has Renault done enough to make the Megane E-Tech pertinent once again … or is this the EV everyone truly did forget?
Let us understand what you think in the remarks.

Renault are brilliant at designing attractive cars. I think they deserve to do well.

Have the current version. It’s a good car. Looks good and drives well. Bit disappointed though that Renault did not do something to enable the new version to have a flatter boot floor (struggle getting folding bikes in!) and offer some form of panoramic roof. Battery improvement good though, albeit it is actually not bad currently. Will wait and see more details about UK spec as I will be in the market again early next year.

Yeah, we really like the previous Megane but the shape of the boot has always been a bit of an issue. Not great for dogs, either. Love the way it drives, though! Hopefully this one will be just as good on that score.

Regarding the Panoramic roof, it really gave us a claustrophobic, very dark feeling in the back seats so I concur it could help. Or at least offer a less dark colored interior.

Yeah the Megan was n my list when I was buying a couple of years ago, bit that low boot floor, or high lip, was a definite point against it. Went for an Enyaq instead.

We need estate versions of Renaults… Estate / sport vagon Megan would be in my short list for next car… Now… Renault has no estate options… Even Clio has lost that option… pity…

This car only changes the battery and front look vs the already existing esprit alpine version btw.

It’s just that no one reviewed the esprit alpine version before because it only came a lot later

And it’s such a good car!
I went in to buy a Renault 5 this January, but somehow ended up with a Megane instead.
I was aware of the upcoming facelift, but mine was new enough to get V2L and one pedal, so happy days.

Been driving my MΓ©gane for a couple of years now and it’s a cracking car. Drives well, plenty of power and comfortable range. Glad the new one is so similar to mine so I don’t get new model envy.

Great review, the frantic rushing did remind me of doing homework on the back of the bus on the way into school, obviously many, many years ago… πŸ˜‚ (Other people not me of course, I was the swot who let them copy my homework).

I love the simpler line-up with only two trims and improved charging, VTL, LFP, etc, you don’t feel short changed if you get the Techno trim. Happy to see they have used Google too as their infotainment platform. Also great they have one pedal driving from the off.

I am over the poppy out door handles, I think VW is right going for the normal handles, though I don’t mind the hidden rear handle. They really need a lighter interior option, IMO. I hope they have heated & ventilated seats and heat pump across the range.

Love my Megane E-Tech. We went looking at the 5 but the Megane won us over with bigger range, faster, more rear and boot space for similar lease money. The drive selector stalk is annoying (as with all Renault’s, sometimes doesn’t engage when you think it has) and the shelf does bump my knee but other than that, I would have another.
To me it’s the forgotten gem of Renault line up, no one talks about it which is a shame.
Love the physical buttons, the ease to turn off annoying lane assist and safety features, in built Google, 150 kwh charging is quick enough for me

Very enjoyable review! The trouble is that when you compress a review like that it highlights how very similar new cars are now (touchscreen, frunk, panoramic roof, V2L, absence of transmission tunnel in rear, presence / absence of physical buttons, battery sizes, price, comparison with EV3 – that’s all there is). Thank goodness we at least get to watch Nicola doing her thing!.

I do think that the Renault 4 and 5 have brought a degree of feelgood to the whole brand. Future tweaks are going to benefit hugely from this.
