These legacy brands bring build quality down, yet continue to put prices up and then they wonder why they are losing sales to newer brands.

Here in Australia where tariffs are very much not a thing as there hasn’t been a car industry for years, Chinese EVs from BYD, Xpeng, Deepal, Geely, Leapmotor, Zeekr, GWM, MG and Chery are collectively offering interiors and equipment never before seen in the AUD $40-60k (£20k-30k) price bracket for EVs and their hybrid/PHEV/petrol cars are even cheaper. Most with 7 if not 10 year warranties.

A Chery Tiggo 4 Pro for example is a 1.5 turbo, Puma sized SUV with more room and a nice Genesis-style interior for only $24k (£12k). The new MG3 base model is on offer at $21,888 all inclusive, so £10.8k.

It’s because Biden blew up the Nordstream pipeline – Germanys access to cheap energy is now gone so costs have gone through the roof. Unless they can resolve this issue prices will continue to rise and quality to fall.

I have to say, I recently test drove the X1, X3 and Peugeot 3008 and the offerings of Kia. The Peugeot had the best interior quality, followed by the Kia and BMW were the worst. Don’t know what’s happening to the German brands but it is not going well!

Glad they realised their new naming scheme was bollocks.

BMW is silly as well. At least Mercedes was somewhat sensible, you are least knew what an EQC was.

Germans are the new Korean’s and Koreans are the new germans. You just don’t have to pay extra for everything!

Audi has lost their way and everyone seems to know it but them. Meet or beat the earlier Audi interiors (e.g. B7) in terms of design, usability, quality of materials, fit. From an interior perspective, this is why I purchased 2 Audis previously. Exterior, bring back purpose and function over trends. From a performance perspective, 0-60 in 5 sec is just fine. Give me character in engine, exhaust, drive controls. This is the recipe of success you had . . . and lost.

50-70k ??? Like most manufacturers – they are dreaming of a time that is long passed. …

It’s weird, can’t get excited about ICE cars anymore.

As a life long biker and petrolhead…. I feel the same. Affordable ICE has tiny moped sized engines and everything else doesn’t change year on year. BEVs have Mini, R5 and many new and fresh looking designs. Buy 2 or 3 years old and you can still have 5 years warranty and half the RRP. Agreed you can’t drive 700 miles non stop… But most don’t actually drive that far non stop.

Sorry but difficult to be enthusiastic over a £50k+ mid sized SUV with plastic on plastic interior. No wonder Hyundai and Kia are selling so well.

You aren’t eating the interior why worry ?

@@sa34w No, but you spend most of your time with the car inside of it, so if it’s cheap, drab and dreary then it’s a fail.

Useful review but please What Car can you do more on the technology aids. You spent 20 seconds talking about the rear load cover but zero seconds on assisted driving aids, can it remote park via a phone, how easy is it to switch off the annoying driver warnings every time etc.

The Q5 looks better and has nicer, higher quality trims on the interior than the (much) more expensive Q6 etron. Why would I buy the Q6? It costs more, it should be more premium than the Q5. Not less.

Quality down, usability down, cost down, but price up, piano black way up – and we are blaming china and tesla for european cars sales down

These were never reliable when cost cutting did not exist but now they are trying hard to to bring the cost down and i wonder how reliable the cars are gonna be.

Audi have in fact ditched the old virtual cockpit as you are unable now to interchange between mapping / driving information on the drivers display. Along with interior scratchy plastics another cost cutting exercise it would seem.

I’ve never understood why there are no Germany car makers that produce FHEV cars….its a real deal breaker for me. I can’t go PHEV at the moment as I live in an apartment and it just wouldn’t be practical.
