I think it would help people a lot if a realistic 80% to 10% range were quoted for cars (winter and summer) because that’s the range between stops on a long journey.

A top job both! I’ll not go into the Jag argument other than to say let’s wait and see what the company releases whether it be a SpongSqare BobPants laugh a minute trend that is out of fashion before it’s built or an elegant new start to a wonderful future. EV insurance has been a prickly issue according to some tabloids for a while but insurance for younger drivers has been absurd for decades, the eUp and its sisters are great cars so shouldn’t be ignored as you mention. Great presentation as always and keep up the great work.

On the Jaguar topic, I do feel like a large part of the uproar was from people who were realistically never going to buy a Jaguar anyway.

I also think that sad truth that gets overlooked is that enthusiasts alone can’t keep a brand going. Jaguar’s sales are 5% of the big German brands, their cars make basically no profit, and their traditional clientele are aging out of car ownership.

Brands like Range Rover and Bentley turned themselves around because they stopped targeting the traditional enthusiast, and started selling the idea that their cars were ‘modern’ ‘cool’ and ‘trendy’. Whether the buyers would admit it or not, there are clearly a lot more general people who are interested in buying into the idea of appearing cool or trendy rather than enthusiasts buying something nostalgic.

For Jaguar it’s change up or die.

I think you have hit the nail square on. Their own data shows high sales of lower priced cars with large model range has not been profitable and it is not where they came from.

‘We are eliminating five products, all lower value. None of those are vehicles on which we made any money, so we are replacing them with new vehicles on newly designed architectures,’ Mardell said during an investor day on June 19, 2024.
Sounds about right to me – reinvent or slowly expire.

The sheer amount of vile, homophobic rhetoric that’s been thrown around online by bigots the past few days over jaguar’s new ad is honestly staggering. It’s a handful of models dressed up in colourful clothing for goodness sake, why the unnecessary uproar? 🤦‍♂️

@@lewis02mcI’m not sure either but it’s a difficult steer for Jaguar. The brand does have quite a macho heritage. I think Jaguar can’t compete with their EVs on price in the mass market and that a younger more inclusive demographic will be more receptive to an all electric, forward thinking rebrand than the traditional older Clarksonesque type. However, it will be a hard sell and if the price point is set too high the demand will be very low. Affordable luxury is more likely to come from China. I’m very interested to see what the actual cars are like when launched but definitely think JLR are playing high stakes poker here.

It’s red meat for the bigoted right-wing press readers, an absolute gift. To them, Jaguar should only appeal to their demographic (we all know what that is) and not to anyone else as it’s a ‘Heritage’ brand. All a load of nonsense!😊

    Great episode, both 😎.

First, Jaguars marketing team have done their job, and as you say, it’s got everyone talking.

Secondly, my bigger takeaway from this episode was your E-3008 journey… The charging network may be (marginally) better than it once was, but who on earth is going to spend circa £400+ per month on a family car that strhuggles to cover 200 miles! It’s terrible.

My objection to the Jaguar ad is a more general point about many ads and branding exercises, is that the campaign appears totally divorced from the actual product. I’ve lost count of the ads I’ve seen that tell me sweet FA about the product

      @appkazoo5925

But it’s not a real ad for an actual car! It was a 30 second teaser for a re-brand, for a range of cars that are to be launched. We get to see the first one on the 2nd December.

After 4 years with an EV I’ve decided that freezing in a cold day to eke out a few miles is pointless, just drive 5 (or 10) miles an hour slower for a bit.

Agree with Vicki, Jag’s biggest mistake was letting the Ipace get stagnant, it was and is a great driving EV, they really should have used its awards and praise to create more desirable EVs and used that leap in to EVs as their redesign.

Some very strange comments about what a learner should drive. Surly, the conversion is about the cost of insurance rather than the size of the car? After all, it’s a dual use car that may be used by a driver rather than a learner.
No one is going to pay £10,000 for insurance. The company is saying go somewhere else.

I can’t believe that we are in a place where I am having to say thank you to someone (Nicola) for calling out the VILE HATRED that has been seen from people, off the back of the Jaguar re-brand. I am honestly SHOCKED that humans – established and intelligent beings seem to spread HATE at the moment… what’s going on??

If people actually took a second before posting something ridiculous online, they would realise how pathetically needless the comment they are about to make is. Whether it’s aimed at Jaguar, a company… yes… a company. Or at the LGBT community… or any other community for that matter.

Honestly! It saddens me so much to see people thinking nothing of posting such hateful comments.

Why can’t people put even half of the effort into BEING NICE, that they do into spreading hatred?

I literally can’t believe all of the drama over a company re-brand… There’s so many other, more important things going on in the world at the moment. Yet, lots of people are crying over a re-brand. WOW!

Again, a massive thank you to Nicola for calling this UNACCEPTABLE behaviour out. Great podcast as always, keep doing what you do and giving us all content to enjoy! 😊♥
