    I recently visited the local Kia showroom and they had the EV9 in that same burgundy red… OMG, what an impressive colour an quality of finish! Slightly shocked by the £75,000 price tag, but I guess that is cheap enough to worry JLR.

      £75k for a Kia is a complete joke. Doesn’t matter how good it is. Next they’ll be asking £50k for a Dacia 😂😂

    I’m watching this in Farnborough with a stream of private jets coming over. I can’t see a situation where billionaires have to prove they need such a huge jet (some of them are really big!). It makes worrying about having a slightly bigger car a bit irrelevant. Having said that I like small cars myself.

    I happen to agree…. Road Tax based upon weight is a far better system than the stupid Luxury Car Tax in the UK, which starts at £40,000 (which clearly isn’t where real luxury cars start).

      Road Tax was abolished in the 1930’s. I think you mean VED.. A system based on vehicle weight would be both unfair, and unenforceable. For example, you could get someone who has a Range Rover, but may only cover 4000 miles a year in it. And on the other hand, you might get a Fiat 500 owner who covers 15’000 miles a year. A system of Road Tolls is the fairest way. Those who use the roads more often will pay more. A system based on vehicle weight will penalise low mileage motorists.

    Thanks for another great, informative podcast. I drive an e-C4 but ned something slightly larger for my next EV. A larger boot to carry around my mobility scooter and fit the shopping in. Some more room in the cabin as well for my long legs and hopefully more extension on the steering wheel (completely agree with you on that Mike). It doesn’t need to be a huge car and the range doesn’t need to massive (250 miles or so) but the driving features I would like only tend to be on the top of the range, long range cars. Any thoughts?

    I thought that the current name is VED vehicle exercise duty, road fund licience is the term my dad use back in the early 60’s. I like to channel and its getting me up to speed with EVs. My current car is a mild hybred Kia Stonic which I am looking to change next summer/autumn. As I hit to big 70 at the end of the year it will probibly be my last. Don’t need to worry about child buggies now but maybe mobility scooters instead so something with a bit more room in the back than the Stonic. Quick car history, 13year old Morris Mini Traveller circ 1961(£30), Austin A35 (when father gave up driving), Vauxhall Chevette, mk1 VW Golf, 2x Montego ests., Focus ests. Kia Carrens 2, 2x Kia Stonic. Cheers

    We all love the nice retro car designs of the 60th up to 90th . . the R5, the Alpine, the Mini . . . .I wonder why 😉😇
    Buying “to big” cars is probably also a bit “status”? And indeed waste of material.
    But . . . there are a lot of people that realy need a bigger car, like Nicola.
    I would never vote for restricting people to buy a bigger Car.
    That would open the door for restricting people to buy a bigger house or boat?.
    Those are also more expansive to build and to maintain. So when you can afford it and like it, go for it.

    Weight and big (perhaps unnecessary large) batteries – you are pushed into the larger heavier ones as the smaller battery version is usually only the ‘poverty spec’ model without any of the ‘toys’ we are used to.

    Option packs are definitely included in the list price for the Additional Rate of Vehicle Excise Duty (not Road Fund Licence).

    I look at the average journey time and how often (and where) I recharge my car to decide what range I need, which is how I ended up with my Peugeot E-208 and a 200+mile range. Only plug it in once a week. Weekend charging at home works perfectly for me, with just the odd top up when I’m in the office. NEVER had to charge it on a public charger (although have been tempted by Tesco’s chargers, charging while shopping seems beneficial even to a cheapskate like me)! I learned very early on to get charging down to a couple of percent before getting a charge – Saves a fortune!

    Enjoyed KHH as ever. Thank you for the editorial ban of “city car” for small cars with small batteries. What might be interesting is a bit more discussion of use cases for day to day driving; it is not all about range. To turn to another madness, Renault’s three stalks to the right of the steering wheel not only confounds right handers, but completely screws us lefties.

    Small cars are awkward to get in and out of if like me, your restricted with mobility. Mind you, the 7 series BMW we used to have, required me to fold myself in half! 😊

    Let us not forget that much of the weight in modern cars is safety equipment, the increased size due to pedestrian safety, and crumple zones. Emissions has to be incentivised, so that our towns and cities don’t become toxic no go areas.

    Road tax – USA North Carolina – I pay for my 2014 SMART ID yearly 886 USD and for my Jaguar XJ8 (5.0 liter) 165 $. NC State clearly doesn’t like to favor electric cars.

      And they dont get Tesla generally and so make some pretty daft comments. Eg: Tesla shares fell after Model S and Y announcements not just this one…its normal.

    Cars, your parents drove. My dad worked Volkswagen dealership back in the day.
    In 1973, I was 4 years old. Dad would drive the works van ( a VW Type 2) as his company car. I can remember running up and down the back of the van while he would drive us to our destination. Health and safety 70’s style 😂

    I’m an avid ‘Electrifier’ so please keep up the good work! The latest ‘Whatcar least reliable car’ results came out recently and amongst the worst are MG & Vauxhall EVs. Have you at Electrifying thought of doing your own survey of EV owners and publishing the results? Maybe you can add a reliability rating to your new car reviews and used car sales page?
