If there were mandatory eye sight checks every year, the number of folk complaining about bright lights at night would reduce.
The problem is defective eye sight, uncorrected vision and cataracts, not defective head lights.
Keep your prescription up to date, clean your specs and windscreen!-
Not sure this is true Paul. I have eye tests every year without fail. I need reading glasses but my distance vision is perfect. I’m 54 and the problem with bright lights is the halo effect they create in older eyes. I read recently that it takes about 9 secs for an older person to recover from a bright light vs 1 second for an 18 year old. This was rarely an issue with the traditional halogen bulbs but the brightness and colour of modern leds is challenging for older drivers. I think many people would be expecting to drive until their mid 70s. We should have regulations that account for people of this age.

The only reason people want brighter lights is , in my opinion because people continue to want to get places, faster and quicker. The best solution is to slow down. If conditions are poor and visibility is difficult it’s best not to be driving too fast anyway,. but bright lights as you point out can cause accidents can cause deaths and definitely are difficult for the other driver to deal with!

Exactly that, if can’t see with your high beams on far enough to feel comfortable, don’t blame your lights but your right foot. It’s too heavy for that road-car-time.

I’ve owned 6 cars by now, all of them of different brands. The car I was flashed the most due to blinding lights was my Mercedes. I complaint MANY times at the dealer and they kept affirming they were well regulated. It was extremely annoying to drive at night. Best lights so far (both in brightness and automatic working) and never people flashing black at me, DS 7 Crossback. I have never had the matrix lights from the VW group though, those have really good rep as well

A sedan shouldnt worry higher vehicles, but larger and older vehicles worry smaller vehicles

Recently lights have become objectively more dazzling – we wouldn’t be having the conversation otherwise.
Unsure if it’s not just people not dipping their lights properly though.
What also bugs me is the blue hue some of them take at certain angles – absolutely should never give off a blue light unless emergency services imo.
