Hyundai Ioniq 3 Review: Less Power, More Fun?

The Hyundai Ioniq 3 is here to handle some seriously great electrical hatchbacks– including the Renault 5, Cupra Raval and brand-new VW ID.Polo. However Hyundai has taken a rather different approach.

Rather of going after huge power and a 0-62mph time to brag about, the Ioniq 3 focuses on lightweight, efficiency, functionality and really satisfying driving. The Long Range version has 135hp and takes around 9.5 seconds to reach 62mph, however with approximately 308 miles of WLTP range, it goes further than all of its essential competitors.

It's useful, too. There's 441 litres of baggage space, including a smart 119-litre 'Megabox' beneath the boot flooring, while the cabin gets Hyundai's new Pleos Link infotainment system, physical climate controls and some smart EV functions.

So, is the Hyundai Ioniq 3 the little electric car to beat? Or would you take the much faster Cupra Raval, VW ID.Polo or characterful Renault 5 instead?

Nicola puts the Ioniq 3 through its paces to learn.

Real door handles AND physical controls in the car?

    WOW!

The stupid door handles on the Ionic 6 are one of the reasons I dislike my wife’s car.
A return to normal door handles would be lovely.

Cept stripped for the fun parts, too weak engines, no racer suspention, no boosted engine sounds, no Racing bits, AND WAAAY to pricy compared to its class rivals.

I am not a fan of the Veloster (or this general body shape), but you are abolutely correct.

How!? Veloster had one door on the driver side and two on the passenger side. This one he 4 doors!

I had a red Honda CRX in 1988 with that same cut off rear and the split rear screen and this so reminds me of that so I forgive it the other odd angles. Especially the price. Well done Hyundai.

When I saw the Hyunda logo on the see-through piece under the spoiler I was thinking 1984 CRS (I graduated High School in ’85 as my point of reference). It really seems to be the spiritual successor to that Honda.

I’ve long thought that the momet the aftermarket gets going in earnest on upgrades to BEVs, that will be the moment when we can say that the BEV will ‘make it’.

I hope that the upcoming SEMA convention in early 2027 in Las Vegas proves me correct.

Helpful to hear about how the back seats actually feel. Plenty of legroom doesn’t always mean a cabin feels spacious.

Shame heated seats are in the higher spec models. Def required for the UK. Great video and glad you kept in the daft bits, makes it special. 🎉😊

This review video was filmed in Sile, Istanbul, where I live. I really like this car and want to buy it when it goes on sale. It features both the city I live in and the car I want to purchase—it’s almost like seeing what the car would look like once I’ve bought it and brought it home. I enjoyed watching it; thanks.
