Geely EX2 Review: should Renault be worried?

The Geely EX2 was China's very popular vehicle in 2015. Now it's concerning the UK, and it has the Renault 5, Fiat Grande Panda and BYD Dolphin Browse strongly in its sights.

Beginning with ₤ 20,990, this compact electrical hatchback offers up to 214 miles of claimed variety, a 375-litre boot, 70-litre frunk and seriously impressive rear-seat area. There's also a substantial touchscreen, cordless Apple CarPlay and Android Automobile, and an eight-year/125,000- mile warranty.

But is the EX2 too sensible-looking to lure purchasers away from the retro Renault 5 and cool Fiat Grande Panda? And can Geely's rapid relocation from Chinese bestseller to UK display room equate into a genuinely great small EV?

      More than coincidental. Geely owns 50% of Smart and makes all the current Smart cars.This is almost the same as Smart #1 in design.

    Why the excessively negative commentary on LFP batteries, without mentioning any of their considerable benefits over NMC? LFP, relative to NMC: 1. Will tolerate being routinely charged up to 100% and down to 0% without significantly decreasing their useful life, 2. Generally have higher cycle life, 3. Are much safer (lower risk of fire), 4. Do not contain cobalt.

      InsideEV had the results from a 100,000km battery test of 10,000 cars and the LFP cars didn’t seem to do that much better than NMC. Its a good tech with some benefits but overhyped

      Because of NMC we have fire problems that give EVs a bad name

      At least LfP gases .. which is still not safe but more manageable

      @viyusavery248 The world’s mined for cobalt in modern recorded times since the 1700s genius smfh.
      The fossil fuel industry was the #1 consumer of it until 2021, apple took over and then evs for a couple years now back to others since lfp/sodium is taking off(65% of chinese evs in 2025 had lfp packs.
      The defense industry&medical industries plus textile industries are all top consumers of cobalt. Should we boycott those to eh?

      @riaz8783 lfp is overhyped imo 20-40% worse pack level cell energy density for about the same reduction in cost vs superior nmc cells and lfp actually consumes more lithium per kg as well.

      I liked the lmfp/mp3/lmr chemistries heavily doped with manganese instead those in early testing matched the best nmc cells from 2020 for about 30%cheaper per kwh.
      Catl though dropped the ball there somehow as they promised them to tesla for the highland 3&juniper Y refreshes and then never delivered.

      It is interesting to also see nmc has basically peaked around 240-270wh/kg for the current best mass produced cells since 2020. It’s cell to pack tech,wireless bms’s,improved cooling strategies 800v tech&switching to mostly prismatic or larger cylindrical cells which have led to gains in pack density outside of the welion semi solid state cells.

      I think that is where the next big leap comes from for evs through semi&full solid state cells here in a couple years.
      Designed right they will offer vastly superior ranges and weight savings along with much faster charging&even less fire risks. I can see semi solid state taking over the mid market stuff and saving around 100kgs, while solid state stays up market in the 60-80k+evs drones cell phones defense industry applications etc. And those will save an easy 200kgs or more off of completed pack weights for full size cars/suvs/trucks etc.

    It is quite big for a Supermini class car hence the spacious rear room but perhaps a little long for “little old ladies” to to easily park. It’s difficult not to recommend a Hyundai i10 or a Kia Picanto or Leapmotor T03 if you only need to get to the shops, the Post Office or the Church.

      ​@tiadaidI’m wondering if Malaysia requires the same expensive ADAS systems. I know some manufacturers structurally reinforce their cars for crash protection in European markets too. It’s often difficult to make direct comparisons. Import and sales taxes make a big difference here in the UK too

      The EX2 starts at R339,900 in South Africa. That’s £15.3k! Given that this car costs about £7k in China, I can’t help feeling that once again, we’re getting screwed over in the UK.

    If Geely wants to compete with European models, they probably has the first compete with MG. MG4 urban is small small car currently for value and space. £17k for a registered premium long range is hard to beat

      For that £17 K, you also get somewhat shoddy build quality. As for the Geely, yes, it’ll get UK buyers, but personally I’d go for almost any of the Renault or Citroen EV choices, either current, or coming shortly..

      I guess it’s available only in this Ultra trim. Here in Brazil we only got the Pro and Max, and no rear wiper in any of them.

    It is just so cute and I’m glad they brought the pink to Europe (was hoping for the lilac though!) I think the lack of power/small battery would ultimately be a dealbreaker for me but if they’re still around when I’m a granny I’ll be all over this x

    13:26 you didn’t mention the positives of LFP batteries. They are more reliable than NMC batteries, degrade less and much less flammable. Performance should not be the only criteria when judging a car. Durability is also important.

    This went on sale in South Africa recently as the cheapest EV and the first batch sold out in 2 weeks. It just does what it says on the box and that’s why people love it. It’s just simply good.

      The single generation leap in prices while incomes barely moved is terrifying. I had a 2nd hand 2012 peugeot 208 gti. That was the absolute top spec of that car you could get. All the kit and the power etc etc. It cost 20k brand new. The top spec GT trim of the very next 208 that came out to replace it not long after cost over £30k and that wasn’t even a GTi with the power or performance additions coz they didn’t even bother to make one… £20k to over £30k in ONE GENERATION???

    Dunno where you got LFP being “inferior” to NMC of the same capacity. Apart from cold weather performance, LFP beats NMC on: longevity, safety, ability to charge to 100% without worrying about degradation, higher tolerance to near depletion and to higher temperatures.

    A few similarities with my Smart #1 – also built by Geely. The 1 second delay before regen kicks in sounds the same. Many design similarities. Main difference is the power and price.
    Who will service it in the UK ? Can I take my Smart to them too ?
