    I’m not sure why people are still buying petrol cars

    1. @lg.studio Avatar
      @lg.studio

      lack of charging infrastructure ||| charging times (as a big chunk of the population lives in flats, and cannot solve overnight charging) ||| public charging almost cost the same as petrol for the same distance ||| much more xpensive as new and the return investment is much longer than people (who actually buy new cars) use to keep their new cars before reselling ||| low resell value ||| as for the car enthusiasts: actual driving experience. 0-100 is just a showpiece and the nice number, but actual cornering capabilities, and lightweight playfullness gives driving enjoyment, what most probably 99% of EVs lack no metter what is the acceleration. Also the nice exhaust notes, the way you control the car through 3 pedals and a shifter.

      @@lg.studiosome valid points but also some massive myths there. Charging infrastructure – just check out the overlay on Google maps. Some parts of the UK are sparse, but in a large proportion of the country there’s chargers in every supermarket car park.

      Plenty of “heavily depreciated” good used EVs on the market now, so plenty of cross-shop at the 13k+ price point for mid-sized vehicles that make up a large chunk of the market.

      As for fun lighter cars and EVs only being good in a straight line, try either the Renault 5 (new, chuckable fun) or the BMW i4 (been around for ages, definitely not light but good fun to drive and decent value used) for good handling outside of your Porsche-types. A few others knocking around as well. Bearing in mind that the vast majority of ICE are dull to drive it’s fairly proportionate. Though I’d agree there’s no MX-5 equivalent that’s not exactly a large portion of the new car sales market is it?

    Interesting cars, I have a model 3 and would certainly go for the IM5, but the 6 looks even better, getting older, just thinking of entry and egress from both. thank you Ginny and Nicola 👍🏻

      @londonwestman1

      On the other hand, I’m thinking about whether it’ll be easy to get in and out. 😉 But, yes. For me too, I think this might be the most relevant question. I’ve an i3 which is easy for front seat passengers, but really a bit awkward in the back.

      I switched from a Model 3 to a Y and returned back in 15 months. Yes it’s easy to get in and out but it’s also 0 emotions to drive these big cars so until I can physically not get into one I’ll keep a Model 3 as it’s an awesome car. Would try the IM5 but looks are not for me. The BYD seal looks nicer imho

      @@ElectrifyingcomIonity & Grideserve, have plenty of 350kW chargers at plenty of MSA’s or near motorways all over the country as well as InstaVolt & Osprey not to mention FastNed in smaller numbers. The only issue now is price, in comparison with Tesla SC’s. As long as these Chinese cars are compatible with 400v chargers like Tesla, then they will work but not get the super fast speeds.

      @@Electrifyingcom Depends on the context, if it’s instead of a home charger (possibly important to some people, although I’d question using that context without being clear about it) then of course a lot of people are going to be an inconvenient distance away from one. If it’s for charging on a trip then you’re almost certain to pass one well before you need to charge in one of these cars, easy to say and easy to do.

Plus there are a host of 300kW chargers from the likes of Osprey, E.on, BP Pulse, MFG EV which will probably manage 90% of the charging curve just fine, with perhaps 10-20% above 300 on the MG IM5/6 charging curve (guessing here based on similar cars😊)

    Very impressive from MG (I have an MG4 XPower, do perhaps I’m biased). Great features, long range, mental performance – and for cheaper than the competition/on a par with BYD.

    While the may priced similar to the Tesla models 3 and Y, the IM5 and IM6 are bigger and closer to the model S and X in size. One of the reasons that the IM cars are so quiet is they have active noise cancellation. This isn’t something new (Mercedes EQ cars have had it for a bit) but it’s nice to see it included in the price. What I don’t know is if it can be switched off for those who can’t get on with ANC.

    SIAC and their MG did a really superb job with this IM5 and IM6. For me, the IM5 is the one to get; I simply love the looks (maybe just front lights could be a little bit sharper). The tech is next level, and the 800V platform is a big plus. I love the fact that almost everything is standard 🙂 IM6 definitely gives me Model Y vibes; you can see where they got inspiration 😉 I just hope that the driving dynamics of the IM5 match how good it looks and its power. Also, I really hope MG brings us that awesome MG Cyber GTS concept.
    This is how Tesla should update the Model 3 and Y, to have an 800V platform, better interior, etc.
    MG really stepped up, and I think it’s just surpassed competition like BYD Seal, Model 3, …
