Can EVs really beat their WLTP range? 400km+ in the new Kia EV2!

Are you tired of being lied to by official WLTP figures? Well, the Norwegian Vehicle Federation are too, so they developed an appropriate real-world EV range MEGATEST!

Its called the El Prix, and we popped along with Kia to follow the path in a 'Shadow', prototype EV2 long range. But how far did we actually go? Did we beat the WLTP? And what is the Kia EV2 Long Variety actually like on a mix of mountain, highway and city roadways?

    By the way, my EV6 does really beat its official WLTP range. And surprisingly, after been driven for over 20K km, its calculated range for 100% battery has even increased!!
    Well done, KIA! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    Did people do this with ICE cars when they were invented? “What is the range of your automobile? Because my horse can do 50 miles a day!”

    1. @CopypastaForTheBlind Avatar
      @CopypastaForTheBlind

      This only matters because charging is inconvienient enough (for most people) that range is a considering factor for model vs model, or more importantly, decides between ICE or EV

      Stupid argument.

      @CopypastaForTheBlindAnd UK public chargers are bloody expensive, so efficiency matters.

    The UK EV2 first edition, can be driven forwards and backwards from the keyfob, but when the top spec models eventually launch in the UK, you won’t be able to have this feature even as an option on any model in the range. I find it really useful to be able to park in narrow spaces, and then get the car to pull out so I can jump in.

    I have a 24 reg standard range Polestar 2. I’m getting 300 miles range summer and 220-250 miles winter (no heat pump either). I’ve done 9500 miles in it and charge at home. I’ve only had to use a public charger once when I was at a national trust property, it charged to 80% from about 40% around 15 minutes into my 2 hours there. My only concern with charging is that for people without home charging it isn’t cheap enough to encourage people away from their petrol or diesel cars. I know discounts are available but it’s still the thing that I think will lead to a society of have and have nots (in terms of driveways). EV2 very impressive!

      @Electrifyingcom

      Completely agree! And glad that you’re enjoying your Polestar 2. We’ve been campaigning for VAT (which is applied at 20% to public charging in the UK) to be cut on public charging, as prices are too high. And it makes the jump to an EV much harder for anyone who doesn’t have home charging. Here’s hoping!

      @Electrifyingcom The only valid argument for a regressive tax like a sales tax is that it discourages things you don’t want and can be forgone for things you want to encourage. So to apply it to DCFC (while exempting air travel in many countries) is asinine.

    3. @stepheng8779 Avatar
      @stepheng8779

      @Electrifyingcom If they cut the Vat the greedy companies will only increase the price. It’s what they always do. No need for the high charges in the first place.

    What a great video, almost commented too early about how it’s a shame it’s the big battery version! Just wait until the end and you get the details on the EV2 standard range that took part in the official test (no spoilers). My short range is due at the end of the month and I honestly can’t wait!

    I really like the EV2, took one for a test drive but wanted the four seat version which for some reason Kia are not bringing to the UK. That range and efficiency is just great.

    How much was the range affected by the amount of snacks onboard? 😂

    1. @TIonesco Avatar
      @TIonesco

      The snacks aided the range as extra fuel

    Interesting video. Thank you.
    Apart from range anxiety, a decent range is also important to avoid the extortionate prices charged at public chargers, although not necessarily at the expense of paying for larger batteries if it’s required most of the time.
    Picking up on the last point of the video, where in the UK can we find motorways where we can do a sustained 70mph these days? 50mph (sometimes 40mph) roadworks for mile after mile, heavy traffic, traffic incidents and so on have all taken their toll on journey speed and time.

    1. @Electrifyingcom Avatar
      @Electrifyingcom

      You make a great point about the reality of modern motorway driving speeds, thanks for watching!

  12. @jeettak Avatar

    Range was important at one point because there weren’t enough charging points. So people wanted more range to mitigate that risk.

    1. @ashliehiggins Avatar
      @ashliehiggins

      There still aren’t enough, as they are either too far away, or too few chargers in a bank of them.

  13. @PJRye Avatar
    @PJRye

    We make the mistake of presuming the percentage charge shown is accurate. No measurement is perfect. I checked my own (MG4) and found that when it reads 50$%, the remaining capacity is about 48%. Not a valid source of complaint, but worth keeping in mind.

    At 12:46 that 70km/h speed limit is 43mph, I would expect most EVs to excel in range at those speeds.

  15. @ridehead8771 Avatar
    @ridehead8771

    To be fair, pretty much all EVs if driven at 50 mph top speed will easily beat its claimed range. Our 2020 Zoe 52kwh battery does 300+ miles at 6.3 mpkWh if you avoid motorway. 👍

    Really interesting video. I think the people most obsessed with range are those without EVs. Those of us that do have them get pretty familiar with what our car can do and it’s not a problem at all.

    1. @rogeriogomesosorio4755 Avatar
      @rogeriogomesosorio4755

      I don’t agree with you! I’ve done, in the last 4 years more than 200.000 kms, only on EV cars and range is a really important issue. More range means less charging stops; less chagrin stops at public chargers means less expensive charging; less stops at public chargers means that I don’t need to rely on a infrastructure that does not work most of the times. So yes, range, at least to some of us, does matters.

    think it would do about that range in the netherlands even with highway speed, since we are a flat country so no climbing. very decent range for that price point.
