    This and the BYD blade 2 are already good enough to make the ICE cars obsolete. No need to wait for other battery tech like solid state. We would do 1000km with 10 minutes charge, or even lighter/cheaper cars with 300-400 km range, that would do 1000 km with 20 minutes charge.

      Ice cars won’t be obsolete because of battery technology. It will because they will be illegal to buy. The ban is already only 3.5 years away. With electricity prices set to double it will be pricey to fill up too.

      @Two_Scars In most countries electricity cost will decrease because of renewable energies. The same batteries you are seeing are going to make Solar and wind replace most other fossil fuel production. Now, could government put more tax to replace some of the tax revenue they are losing on gas/petrol. This is still a possibility, but many will also be able to produce their own electricity.
      Secondly, prices of the electric vehicle will continue to go down, they are already cheaper in China. And when you can have a battery than can charge in 3 minutes, you don’t need 70, 100 kw battery, that is that 40-60 kwh car will be both even cheaper to buy and more efficient to run. In five years no one will want pure ICE cars. It will be either full electric or range extended ones, that is with a small ICE engine that would run the battery. Donald Trump and the Chinese battery manufacturers just sealed the future of ICE cars. One has shown how dependent and fragile we are because of petrol price, and the second that was thought to be a dream just 1 year ago, is now possible with electric cars.

      @danielvilliers612 I do like the positive attitude but it’s not todays reality. 18-34 years still can’t charge at home or generate their electricity because they rent with retires most likely to have home charging. Volatility still affects electricity prices as UK gas spiked shows and we still maintain marginal pricing. Chinese cars will remain high cost in the UK due to import tariffs eg. compare the BYD seal. Generally UK people can’t afford an expensive of over £1k let alone a car replacement. Additionally renewables have not brought down electricity costs with above inflation raises comparatively. Add mileage tax and increasing VED it may be a little to late in this economy.

      @mug_spinner Batteries are still an merging tech, for storage their is the promise of 10 USD per kilowatt with Sodium ion batteries by 2030. Last two years went from about 100 usd for lfp to 50 to about 35 in china. We are still experiencing 200 usd outside of china, so their at least a potential 5x at least decrease to be on the safe side. Look at those home battery system, or the likes of Ecoflow how the price decreased during the last 3 years, now these could go 3 to 5x lower, very soon.

    I just don’t see the need for these speeds for 80-85% of personal usage cars.
    Seems a huge investment for the small minority, however, it might change the mind of the guys who just refuse point blank to use an EV.
    Cool? Yep.
    Necessary? Absolutely not.

      I’d argue the opposite, majority of regular people would much rather wait less than 10 minutes for a 10-80% charge than the current 15-20 or even 30 mins for alot of current evs, especially big vehicles like pickups and SUVS.

      More importantly elders, wouldn’t have to worry about relearning how to fuel their vehicle and also people that need the fast charge while out and don’t have time for a 15-20 minute top up, like sales people or when off roading. Then little things like only spending 5 minutes at a charger before you get to work because you forgot to plug in the car last night, we are human, stuff like that happens or when you go to visit some one and you sit need a full charge but enough to get home, spending only 5 mins instead of 15-20 is much, much better. On top of all that, there are plenty of people who will not switch to electric until charging gets that fast simply because of convenience.

      You say that, but the reality is a bit different. I’m currently trying to decide if I should buy my MG4 at lease end and, frankly, I might. Reality is it’s still as good as, or better, than anything that came out last year or is coming out in 2026/27 in its price/size bracket. And it’s coming on for 4 years old. I think a lot of this stuff won’t go into cheaper cars for a good while yet.

    A few years ago, hearing about the fact that a very difficult task to make solid-state batteries ready for mass market is to to find a way to prevent cracking in the compound under repeating high-power charging stress, I thought: “maybe they could find a _soft_ compound instead of a solid, hard one, that would deal with the stress applied to it without cracking”. Finally, instead of making the solid softer, they found a way to make the liquid electrolyte into a fluid gel.

    With these speeds you could imagine behaviour shifting and people part filling their battery for a few minutes based on a price they want to spend like we do with fuel tanks.

    Would love a large van with the 930 mile range battery as a full time live in vehicle. No interest in cars as such as I don’t ever plan to own one and just stick with vans all my driving life.

    I don’t think it helpful to join the haters in talking about range. It’s not that important for most really. Charging speed is more interesting but we can already do 12 minutes 10-80% and my year old car does it in 18 minutes. That charges way fast enough for me when on long journeys.
