3 Series drag race let's goooo!

We have actually got our hands on a , & 330e, and they're going head-to-head to see just how different the performance is of a gas, diesel & plug-in hybrid 3 Series. However, they're not all stock – each vehicle has actually had a phase one tune! So let's see how they compare.

Beginning with Mat in the Touring, it's powered by a 3-litre straight-six diesel that can now put down 430hp and 850Nm. Power is sent to all 4 wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs in at 1,945 kg.

Next up we have the . It's geared up with a 3-litre straight-six fuel, and it now puts down 470hp and 630Nm. Like the diesel power is sent out to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs in at just 1758kg.

Then finally we have the 330e. It's geared up with a 2-litre turbocharged 4 cylinder coupled with an electric motor, and these combine to put down 400hp and 700Nm. Power is only sent to the rear wheels only by means of an 8-speed automated gearbox, and it's likewise the lightest vehicle here, tipping the scales at scales at 1,740 kg.

So the M340i has the most power, but will it be an easy win? Or could the diesel or plug-in hybrid snatch it? There's only one method to learn … LET'S RACE!

I have a stage 1 330e and I honestly love it because it’s the cheapest straight line performance car I think of. I pootle to work and back on electric only mode then if I want a bit of speed in xtraboost mode it absolutely flies! Mine was dyno’d at 415bhp in xtraboost which is crazy all things considered.

The downside of the car is that you have to be careful about oil temp – if you’ve been running in electric only and suddenly want to boot it, you have a cold engine and have to wait 5 mins for it to warm up.

Overall I love it though, I average well over 50mpg all of the time but have enough power to surprise 95% of cars on the road.

Also – it does have launch control its just extremely finicky to get working!

Seeing all this heated debate about the 330e, M340i, and even the M340d, I’m struck by the sheer passion we all share for BMW’s engineering marvels. Whether it’s tweaking the 330e for jaw-dropping performance or appreciating the M340i’s balance of power and grace, it’s clear we’re all in this for the love of the drive.
