Smart #2: Why Bigger Isn’t Always Better

Smart is finally making a Smart vehicle again.

This is the brand-new Smart # 2– a tiny two-seat electrical city vehicle that's just 2.75 metres long, rear-wheel drive and created to bring the Smart brand back to its roots.

After years of increasingly big SUVs, Smart has returned to the idea that made the original City Coupe and Fortwo so dazzling: make it small, fun, distinct and incredibly easy to drive around town.

The # 2 gets a 35.8 kWh LFP battery, with Smart targeting as much as 180 miles of range. It can charge from 10– 80% in around 20 minutes at up to 65kW, while higher-spec versions get 11kW air conditioning charging. There's likewise Vehicle-to-Load ability.

And despite its tiny measurements, Smart hasn't precisely stinted the technology. There's adaptive cruise control, Highway Assist, Smart Pilot Assist, LED lighting and a lot of connection, while the Premium version adds heated seats, a glass roof and a seven-speaker Sennheiser stereo.

Beneath, it's rear-wheel drive with an 82hp motor, wider rear tyres and– extremely– a five-link rear suspension setup.
There are 3 variations planned for the UK: Pure, Premium and a limited-run Couture Edition, with the # 2 anticipated to cost less than ₤ 20,000 when it shows up early next year.

That's potentially more affordable than you might anticipate for a vehicle that feels more like a modern interpretation of the original Smart than another anonymous electric hatchback.
So has Smart lastly discovered its sense of humour again? And would you actually purchase a two-seat electric car in 2027?

Let us know in the remarks.

    I really want this car.
    So excited the Smart For Two is back.
    Not sure about the name #2 but that won’t put me off booking a test drive.

      I will be calling it the No 2 since that’s what # means, and it’s funnier. 🙂 But mostly because ‘hashtag’ still sounds stupid, and we’ve been telling them that for years now, bless ’em. Even VW realised that Polo was a better name than ID number.

    I had a Smart car and loved it. So ahead of its time. Major error when they killed it off.
    The new smart 2 is almost identical to last smart car – externally and interior.
    Providing it is sensibly priced it will sell loads. I will order one 👍

    Can we kill off the phrase “city car”? As someone who lives in the countryside, everything that makes these small cars work in the city, makes them work in the sticks too. Narrow country lanes need small narrow cars just as much as city streets.

      Agreed! It’s total an utter nonsense. I drove my Smart all over the country (excluding Scotland but I could have done that if I had a reason). Never had a problem. They are great to park but people used to tell me to park nose on – the only car wider than it was long was pretty much the biggest Land Rovers, so I don’t recommend that with the old ones which would stick out. This is far longer (which makes me sad) so it’d be even dafter. Super easy to park though. Parallel parking becomes a lot easier when you’re car is so much shorter. There were even London car parks with Smart car bays because they could fit more in the same footprint. 😀

      Absolutely. A small chuckable car round the lanes is way better than a n SUV. If you need to do muddy tracks, fair enough, but 99% don’t. This looks a brilliant car.

      They used to be classed as local runabouts, to distinguish the type of car from larger touring and goods carrying vehicles.

      But the marketing bods got involved and wanted a name that targeted a demographic they could measure against, hence termed them city cars

      Indeed. I live in the sticks in Spain 🇪🇸 and use a Hyundai Inster (larger battery variant). I could probably get by on 42kWh but with 49kWh I rarely need to fast-charge. It depends entirely on daily circumstance. My minimum use is 70km and quite often 150km. Also battery chemistry is important, a 36kW LFP battery that you always charge to 100% is really useful, whereas a 36kWh NMC battery that you should only be regularly charging to 80% is really quite limiting. For what it’s worth, I used to drive a petrol Smart when I lived in Birmingham in 2004 – it was my only car and I used it for long journeys, too. Small cars a just so cool.

      Indeed. I’ve had big cars and “city cars” and SHOCKINGLY I drove both to all the same places. What’s more, at no point did I live in a city?! Yesterday I drove my PV5 Passenger from one side of London to the other. Is that a city car? Maybe the the little Citroen ami could be described as a city car, but then I hear they and the Fiat are popular in Mediterranean resorts. So maybe not.

    I still have my prized 2006 Smart Fortwo cdi here in Alberta and I REALLY REALLY REALLY want Geely/Mercedes to strike a deal to return the brand to the Canadian market since we’re both highly urbanized and with one of the cleanest power grids in the G20 with 86% running on Hydro and Nuclear power now! This is precisely the kind of car that the Big 6 cities here would really eat up!

    35.8 kwh battery in a car this small is amazing. I can’t believe they’re actually making European cars for Europeans again, it’s amazing

      My over 4m Hyundai Ioniq has a 38Kwh battery. Granted the Smart is a touch smaller, this should be completely workable. Looks amazing!

    3. @MihneaRadu-CarsStuff Avatar
      @MihneaRadu-CarsStuff

      @amaury1264 Car length/size doesn’t perfectly correlate to eficiency. I have a sneaking suspicion the ioniq cuts though the air better than the smart. But like you said, sound perfecrly workable either way

    4. @marcusjenkins Avatar
      @marcusjenkins

      Brilliant spec for the battery. LFP that you always charge to 100% and small dimensions (low drag factor and weight) – excellent. You really could have one of these as your only car and rent a larger car or a van if and when you need it. Having lived with a petrol Smart for a year in 2004 I can say that it’s amazing what you can achieve with a two seater of those dimensions. Your shopping goes in the passenger seat. Weekend breaks for two people (including camping!) were possible with careful packing.

    Glad to see Smart have gone back to their roots. I had a 2020 Smart EQ which I loved but it was let down by the range particularly in the winter and with the heater on. Hopefully this new version should give at least 130 miles in winter which is double what my EQ achieved.

      @Jacob_Tulipa because they haven’t heard of Caterham and are perhaps, a bunch of wimps with no idea of what people once, if they weren’t, they’d have done this car first. 😉 Remember, there’s still Mercedes people involved here which explains all the bad bits.

    That´s the anti-thesis to the Jag001 – thats tiny outside but huge inside. I need an excuse to buy it. Love it.

    1. @eamoneejit Avatar
      @eamoneejit

      This would fit in the boot of the Jag, if it had a boot bigger than an E-type coupe. The packaging in that monster is appalling. Not sure what’s under the front but I suspect it will be just as disappointing as the rest of the Type01.

    2. @BavarianCarEnthusiast2030 Avatar
      @BavarianCarEnthusiast2030

      @eamoneejitexactly – I respect the design courage and effort – seems like packaging was never important until production. It’s just not useable – 001 not the Smart

    4. @jonevansauthor Avatar
      @jonevansauthor

      It’s the perfect car for a second car, something to let teenagers drive, it makes plenty of room on a two car drive, it’s super easy to park even on the street, it’s incredibly safe, it’s very cheap to run, and you can fit more than entire shopping trolley of groceries in it.

    5. @jonevansauthor Avatar
      @jonevansauthor

      @eamoneejit I don’t care about the new Jag really but I am surprised they didn’t look at their old motors and say, ‘You know what, this design Brian did is very bland, but would people like an electric E-Type styled car?’ They’ve got to do a new design though or they don’t feel they’ve created it themselves. It’s like TV adaptations which completely destroy the source material that everyone bought as a book and then they’re upset that they don’t do well with the fans or anyone else.

    I really can’t stand hearing that “Hashtag 2” repeatedly. It’s not Twitter, so it’s “Number 2” to me which makes more sense for a car. That being said, it looks good and I’m glad someone is making small cars again and I wish it would come to Canada.

    1. @Electrifyingcom Avatar
      @Electrifyingcom

    This is the first smart car since it’s conception that’s actually on brand, smart have lost their way, I want to see this be a return to form for the brand. I do kinda wish I could get a petrol or diesel version but accept that isn’t going to happen.

    Now, let’s see a modern roadster, that’s still the most fun car I’ve ever owned.
