New Citroën 2CV: The £13K EV That Could Change Everything

Nearly 80 years after the original 2CV initially appeared, Citroën is restoring one of the most iconic names in motoring with a new little electric car inspired by the legendary French original.

And yes, we've brought an egg.

The initial 2CV was designed to bring 4 individuals and 50kg of luggage throughout rural France, while being cheap, useful, simple to maintain and– most importantly– comfortable adequate to cross a freshly ploughed field without breaking a basket of eggs.

Citroën says the brand-new car isn't expected to be a retro copy of the old 2CV. Rather, it's trying to recreate the same philosophy: easy, economical, practical and comfortable electrical transport.
The concept is just 3.76 metres long and features some fantastic information motivated by the original, including its upright shape, round headlights, huge steel wheels, split-tailgate style and plenty of surprise 2CV Easter eggs.

Inside, things are intentionally simple, with a single-spoke steering wheel, an eight-inch touchscreen, a minimalist control panel, creative storage and even a detachable Radioën speaker. And yes, there are special pockets designed to bring eggs.

The production vehicle is expected in 2028, with Citroën targeting a rate of less than EUR15,000 before aids– possibly making this one of Europe's the majority of budget friendly electrical cars and trucks.
We do not yet know the last battery size, variety, efficiency or charging speed, however Citroën is clearly prioritising low weight, simpleness and affordability instead of turning the 2CV into another high-performance EV.

So, has Citroën recorded the spirit of the original 2CV?

And, most notably … will it pass the egg test?

    They made the original until 1990. Madness

      Yeah. The thing is they were just dirt cheap to produce so even if it wasnt a bestseller anymore, there were still enough buyers to offset the cost. The 2CV was especially popular with hippies, anarchists, and socialists, since this car was basically a rejection of market capitalism.

    Good lord it’s perfect. It better be rolly when driving. If I doesn’t feel like the car is gonna roll over while hitting a corner at 20mph I’ll be livid.

      Exactly. If this new 2CV doesn’t have the longitudinal interconnected suspension, then I have no faith that Stellantis hasn’t botched up somewhere else.

      Funny. The 2CV was a utility vehicle before they stuck the word sports in front. Love it, but I’d love it more in French blue. Bet you can get out of first gear on a hill too.

      @davidcottrell570 “gears” on this car are likely to be park-forward-reverse. might only be suitable for city use,not on highways over 80KMH.

      @JayWye52. If you ever drove a 2CV, you would understand. They made a mark 1 Mini feel modern which they were, but still had a charm of their own. I own an EV. A bit different from a 2 cylinder air-cooled 9hp motor, but the ‘deux chevaux’ was designed to replace a horse and cart. As radical as the model T was in 1908, forty years before.

    Very nice to see Citroen using Magma Orange on their car.

    I’m 99% that’s the production car on the outside at least

      Yup, we reckon the exterior styling is pretty close to what we’ll see in the production car. We’ve got everything crossed for standard fairy lights, too.

      I was super hyped for the Twingo, but they really succeeded in keeping all the super annoying corporate marketing type of bullshit, while getting rid of all the iconic parts from the production vehicles. It is a goddamn travesty.

      @BeLowBelowo Yes, all but the last years when they changed to ordinary, boring round dials. We had them all. I want this new car, please release it! Edit: But the larger CX and earlier models also had this what we at least in Sweden called the “bathroom scales” speedometer.

    I had two 2CVs back in the day and they were great, what made them great was their simplicity and their quirkyness. It looks like Citroen have kept the best bits, the look, the flip up air vents, the roll back roof, the column shift and the funky seats. If these bits make it to the production car then they will have a modern classic on their hands. The Vorsprung d–k tuggers are never going to buy this car so please Citroen don’t water it down to try and keep everyone happy. Vive La France !

    I was an apprentice in the 70s, I used to be a regular passenger in the 2cv, it was mad but brilliant though I never wanted one, you had to be of a certain character to have one of these. This one instantly put a smile on my face, I’m old now, so 🤔 I’d have one.

      It’s a halo car. It’s not intended to be practical… it’s supposed to turn heads and get people into the showroom. There’s going to be cheaper, more practical cars on the way.

    4. @MartianDill Avatar
      @MartianDill

      @martyn_g imho jaguar have failed even at turning heads, this 2CV or any new Renault ev will definitely be more headturning than that gray slab blending with the crowd of other gray slabs

      @martyn_g not sure about cheaper but I think the next one will be an SUV. Personally if I had the money I’d have a Type 01 but I don’t so looks like my last Jag was an I Pace

    @doonegg

    I basically grew up in 2CV – we went to meets all over Europe, camped in it, had the Van version (AK), experienced a fire of the engine on a highway, got woken up by a cow licking my head through open front window where I was taking a nap… I don’t have many good childhood memories but the ones I do have are usually tied to 2CV.
    If it retains its character somehow like this concept and the price is not too much it’s gonna be my first EV.

    I wish Canada would open our market to fun little European EVs like this, the Twingo, etc

    1. @ricequackers Avatar
      @ricequackers

      With more trade agreements with the EU likely to happen, it might happen sooner rather than later. Currently Canada follows the US FMVSS type approval system. If they also adopt the ECE type approval system used by Europe and the rest of the world, it’ll make the cost of entry for the French manufacturers much lower since they’d be able to just bring their Euro-spec cars over. The big question is whether they can find enough buyers in Canada to be worth the overheads.

    Former Citroen CEO Linda Jackson in 2019: “What I don’t want to do is become a manufacturer that produces retro. I’m not going to produce a new 2CV.” I am so happy that they changed their mind! Hope they’ll keep the umbrella lever and the bathroom scale speedo, although it obviously doesn’t belong – that was of course CX and GS. But an irresistable touch!😊
